Can't say enough how much Taren and his swimming Foundations book has helped me. I THOUGHT I could swim but didn't realize how much I panicked in the water. I can't wait to do my first Sprint this summer. Keep putting out the good info!
Only just found you a few weeks ago and am so glad i did. I have done my first ever and so far only try, olympic distance 6 years ago and did so many things wrong. I have had a new pair of mirrored goggles that i never tried beforecthe race and hey presto they did not fit my face, meaning every time my face was in the water they filled with mucky, churned up lake water. This meant i ended up doing the swim pretty much swimming breast stroke. Not only did this cost an immense amount of time, it also exhausted me and my legs for the bike. Then in my panic i forgot my belt, so had to go back for it. In the end finished in a diabolical 4:20, but got that damn medal. :) rn i am training again but my silliness resulted in peronial tendonitis in both feet, so no running for who knows how long. :'(
@@Animosaro970 I can swim 500m now non-stop. But I still have a lot of drag so putting a lot of time to correct my body position. Once I nail that, i think my efficiency will automatically go up. 7 more weeks to the race :)
Thanks for an informative and easy to follow guide Taren. As a someone who has never done a triathlon and who has just signed up for their first sprint, this is a great start point.
Watched this twice. Will watch again. Thank you. I did my first rehearsal of an Olympic the other day after 3 months' training. About a 2:50 time, so room for improvement on speed. But a 70.3 later in the year is my target. Can't wait. Thanks for all the support.
Watching this video made me buy your three books. I am a swimmer but I'm sure you will bring me value. So excited to read them. Thank you for sharing your story.
I just finished my first Sprint last weekend, and sure wish i had seen this months ago. I had a 70.3 on the list, but need to really work on the open water swim before that will happen. There is so much great info here that i will have to watch it multiple times to assimilate it all! I have family in Bellingham WA, and may try to pop in the next time I am in the area. You have been a huge help to this beginner and can't thank you enough! Now off to go train for the next Sprint (River Bluff Triathlon) in TN.
I'm new to the sport as well. About to do a Super Sprint in Jefferson City then a few Sprints sprinkled through the summer. Good luck to ya. Anything you want to mention about your first race that is worth noting?
@@SpencerG317 Yeah it was a huge learning experience and a comedy of errors all rolled into one. The open water swim was a big challenge. I will have to get more time in the open water before the next Sprint. I did manage to stay out of everyone's way, but the difference from the pool to the lake was no joke. The comedy came when i was so excited to finish the swim and get to the 2 mile bike ride uphill that once i reached the top and went to get a drink i notice that i had left the timing chop in the transition area. Luckily my son was there tracking time for me as well since all i really was looking for was to finish. I had found one of Taren's videos about brick sessions about a year ago and essentially been doing them for about 8 months and worked my up to a 40-50k bike followed by a 8-10k run every Saturday. I would say those saved the day for me. My son said that you could tell the folks who had not done those, and the really struggled to get started on the run. Through it all i still managed to finish 1st in my age group, and will be back for more!! Did i mention that I remembered the timing chip for the run, but forgot my number bib!! LOL Good luck in your Super Sprint and other events!!
Thank you so much Taren for this extremely informative video I have just started watching your channel (actually found you by researching bike trainers!😂) and I’m liking your common sense approach and easy to understand training plans much respect from the uk!👍🇬🇧
Hey! My husband and I just signed up for our first! Super excited and love your content. The one we signed up for has a sprint, but the swimming distance is 400 meters. Do you know why?
Just watched your video fron 2 years ago before this one...Thank you for making an updated version. I have NO equipment other than shoes and dreading the entry cost. Looking forward to the journey.
"You need a high elbow recovery" " I CAN'T BREATHE! WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT" lol 😂

Thank you Taren! Signed up for my first sprint tri today in Feb'23. I hardly can swim 50m todays. It's going to be an exciting 16weeks ahead of me :)
This was me in March this year, I couldn't swim 25m.
I’m doing my sprint tomorrow.
You’ve got this!

@@toddtaylor8400 That is a hilarious story crossed with a big fear (the timing chip). Oh man. Good to know.
Thank you for this video. Your videos/podcasts are so helpful. I totally agree that the swimming for us beginners is the most intimidating.
Great video Taren. Really nice zoomed out summary
Excellent work on this video Taren! I really hope this will answer a lot of questions new triathletes have. 👏
