    Excellent, rock-solid episode -- or whatever it is you want to call it -- all the way down to a truly funny punchline. I have no doubt that this would have been animated and re-released in that form by now if it weren't for the fact that they didn't have the original actors doing the voices. Top of the field artists all around as well. In addition to Neil Adams doing the cover, it was clearly some form of his Crusty Bunkers crew that provided the interiors as well.
    As far as that jackass ambassador goes, however, if I was Kirk I would have told Scotty to lock the transporter on his little pet and beam it right up his...

    Although I do find it funny that the storyline has to do with how good it is to have different races on board yet Lt. Ahura has been turned white, and Sulu's black. 😆

    Comics with records were an awesome find everytime I came across them as a kid. The Marvel one's I had were all dublicates of actually fairly recent comics I also had, so I'm betting these Star Trek ones are taken from Gold Key issues, which would explain the coloring issues here; I still often forget that Spock was never shown wearing a red TOS-era shirt in-canon.

      Actually all eleven STAR TREK stories that were released on records (some without comics) were original stories. None came from comics or television episodes.

    I've had this record and another one, but they were large albums that had 3-4 of these stories on one instead of 45 sized, since I was preteen, and I've wished for years someone would take these, basically soundtracks, and fully animate them like TAS!
    All these years I looked at the pictures, and not once had I noticed Uhurah is drawn as a blond hair, blue eyed White, but has the right voice!
    Didn't realize the black character was supposed to be Sulu.
    Somebody did it intentionally for some reason, or the artist never saw the show!(?)
    Like myself I'd bet most kids never noticed it back then either, cause your just basically listening to a record, and pictures are just glanced over for the most part.

    I was just thinking of this record yesterday and wondered if it was on TH-cam. I'm glad I found it so easily. I remembered listening to this so many times when I was a child. I remembered the story really well but it's strange that I don't remember all of the race-swapping. That seems to be a really odd thing to do in the mid-70's.

    • @CHDanhauser
      @CHDanhauser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The incorrect likenesses in the comic were probably unintentional.

      @@CHDanhauser it could be one of two things let's go first with the one that's a bit of a stretch it could be their color pallet didn't have the necessary color though as I stated that's a bit of a stretch especially with Uhura all Pallet's have black in them or it could be sales wouldn't have done as well with accurate representation.

  • @freebretth

    I don’t know what’s up with black Sulu and white Uhura, but this was a cool story that was very much in the tradition of the OS.

    • @CHDanhauser
      @CHDanhauser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is how they were drawn - incorrectly - in the comic book that accompanied the story record.

      I think it was trouble with the orange yellow and shading. The black guy was another doctor and used as a navigator. I don't remember sulu or chekov much or uhura. I think the communication officer is the blonde in Doomsday Machine.

  • @grahamturner1290
    @grahamturner1290 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Uhura is a blonde? Weird. But thanks for this! Nice use of M'ress from the Animated Series. 🖖

  • @Tarotlynx
    @Tarotlynx ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been looking for this episode for years. I'd heard it once as a child, but my brother talking so much made it impossible for me to understand it. I wasn't even sure it existed. All I remembered was the crew going mad until a female feline officer calmed the creature responsible. I'd thought it came from the cartoon, but it didn't.
    I'm so glad I found this, just so I know I'm not crazy. Though whomever did the artwork was. Uhura isn't white, Sulu isn't black, Chapel has blonde hair and M'Ress is a cat, not some green woman.

    • @CHDanhauser
      @CHDanhauser  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you liked it. Yes. The art messed up the appearance of Sulu and Uhura. Not sure why that happened. There are plenty of sources of crew pictures even back in 1975.

    I remember this comic and record as a kid, it was fun, But seriously there's no way you can convince me that Kirk would have put a priority on capturing the Ambassador's pet alive especially if he was convinced that it would pose a serious danger to the safety of his crew and his ship.
    IMHO he wouldn't have hesitated for a second to order a security detail with phasers set to stun
    instead of trying to capture it with nets.
    However by 11:25 after the Ambassador had cut him off Kirk's “solution” would be to determine which section of the ship this creature was hiding in by scanning each and every inch of the Enterprise with sensors and then evacuate those decks of any crew members, seal them off and then cut off all life support to that section of the Enterprise regardless of how such an action as killing the Ambassador's pet might affect Starfleet relations with the Ambassador afterwards.

    Man, that is the wackiest alley cat alien I've ever seen. Hahaha. -- And how did Lt. M'Ress turn into the Blue Lady? Oh, again, :head-desk: Yet somehow, this is still fun (and funny). I guess I'm easily amused (and desperate for some good Star Trek).

    Umm..lol...how the hell did Uhura become so pale.

  • @TheAngryAstronaut

    It's possible that the artist watched "The Doomsday Machine" and thought that Lt. Palmer (a gorgeous blonde communications officer) was Uhura.

    • @CHDanhauser
      @CHDanhauser  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The artist simply didn't research the appearance of the character when producing the comic art.

    I mean, I know this is a story for kids, but didn’t anybody think of stunning it with a phaser? Really, though, not a terrible story, all things considered. Makes more sense than Spock’s Brain.

    So, some old comic / record didn't know Uhura was African, and so they turned here into a white woman with blond hair. Oh, great, that's just... :facepalm: :head desk: Well, at least Sulus is still Asian. Man.....

    An Asian (Sulu) is a black guy. And African American (Uhura) is a white woman. 👎🏿
