Hedgehog Noontime Discussion: Parental Authority and Liberal Society

UVA political scientist Rita Koganzon discusses her new book, Liberal States, Authoritarian Families(Oxford University Press, 2021) and her upcoming essay for THR, “You Are Not the Boss of Me,” both addressing the seemingly paradoxical need for strong parental authority in raising children to be good citizens in liberal democratic societies. Responding to her remarks are Rachel Wahl, a professor at UVA’s Curry School of Education and a fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture, and Joseph E. Davis, a research professor in sociology at UVA and chair of the “Picturing the Human” colloquium at the Institute.
