This very song is amazing.. it's so full of life, and the composition is just beautifull! I know it's a personal taste, but even this instrumental bit is full of emotion to me.
2022 this is still one of most beautiful song from Dream Theater. 2:27 i literally shed a tear. Kids nowadays will never know the true beauty of such music.
@@ksbtch1935He didnt say all kids. Its more common for kids now adays to listen to music such as rap, hip hop, modern pop, and other meaningless souless music. You just happen to discover this band and these genres. I would say 90% of kids at the age of 5 - 15 would hate this type of music. Which is sad. Thats what he meant I'm assuming.
dream theater has sprinkled snippets and riffs from all of their music through out all of their music. especially this album. but it does have connections to others song here and there. ultimately there is one big story being told. wonderful album and genius work. still my favorite album
I only wish the story itself was better told. 1998-99 was the year for cyberpunk/steampunk to thrive with films such as Dark City and The Matrix, along with psych thrillers like The Sixth Sense. Also in video games, Silent Hill(psych thriller)just came out, so DT had the potential to make an absolute massive splash in the mainstream. If only they weren't so pissed off from the FII studio sessions, then the story would have had much better continuity, instead of incessant and gluttonous instrumental sections that kill the pace of the story. The story does not move at all after "Fatal Tragedy" until "Finally Free". DT had a gold mine up its own sleeve. The setting was perfect from "Overture 1928/Strange Dejavu", followed well by "Through my words/Fatal Tragedy"..... and then they had to kill the story with instrumental orgies. Damn, they had such potential and rarely, ever realised it with this album.
This whole album is working on some other universe. It's as if they were in my head and hand-crafted every single note and pitch perfectly to the pleasure of my welcoming ears, mind, body, and soul. The greatest album ever made.
SFAM will be never beaten in our life time. Start to end, just a magical concept progressive journey. Their peak, their true masterpiece. Just the perfect blend of theme, melody and technique.
Despond Definitely not story telling though. Too many breaks in the story. Makes it feel like Portnoy didn't take literature class seriously at all. Operation:Mindcrime is a much better experience as a narrative, in my opinion.
This has a very OPERATION MINDCRIME vibe. This is my favorite album of theirs. Otherwise I harken back to my 1970's high school days and listen to the Allen Parson Project on vinyl. I ROBOT. Too cool.
1:51 my favorite aspect of DT is how they can fuze jazz and metal together so effortlessly, The guitar solo is absolutely insane, but if that piano were not in there this wouldn't hit as good
I learned about this track 9 years ago. Yesterday I searched for it all day and couldn't remember the name. Falling asleep last night I remembered it. Oh, I think that god exists ... God of MAGNIFICENT MUSIC!
Dream theater isn't a manufactured mess. They put real Emotion in their work and music. When i listen to their songs, i really feel as though I'm involved in the story somehow- its what dream theater has done with every single one of their albums, they know how to captivate/ capture a person and place them into the middle of the drama that is un-folding in their ears. People listen to dream theater because each song is different, each song has its own charm and responsibility.
The guitar is used in many genres to provide rhythmic and harmonic accompaniment to a voice or other instrument, or to fill in the harmony in a ensemble. The guitar is also used to perform solo parts either unaccompanied or with accompaniment from other instruments. So it's a solo.
Symphony X - Accolade II: 3:42 Metallica - To Live is to Die: 4:29 Dream Theater - Overture 1928: 2:26 Check those riffs out and tell me if they don't all sound uncannily similar!

(album, really)
I almost gave up playing the guitar because of John ... I thought that I could play everything I was listening to .... I spent countless hours trying to learn licks, I didn't stop playing to spend time with my kids and then one day I just realized there is very HARD work to get this level, but also a HUGE part of natural talent. I feel better now that I have lowered my aims a little bit, I can play Clapton stuff, Gary Moore and Santana stuff, Metallica tracks, and as such ... but I gave up Dream Theater, but I have all of their records !
man all that scale vs. solo arguing in the comments is hilarious ... it is so simple ... scales are the foundation for solos but solos aren't scales but simply notes from a scale arranged to form melodies... if all he was doing was playing a scale ascending and descending in a particular position then one might be able to argue a lack of creativity (but that is just not the case as we are listening to one of the all time creative forces ever; DREAM THEATER!!!)
1:36 - 1:52 "There must be the third and last dance This one will last forever Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles She's taken you to your home."
Holy Shit! This just completely nuked my mind. Srs. Every time I used to listen to this song, I thought it was the perfect song that summed up the album as a whole. And then when I saw this comment, my entire mind had shattered through the process of connecting all the dots.

@dreamtheater142 No. The guitar is used for all that, but it's also for plenty of non-voice accompanying places. This song for example uses the guitar for the melodies rather than vocals. It also uses it for rhythm sections that don't have any vocals, but there's also solos played by the guitar as well. A melody line on a guitar doesn't count it as a true solo, but the melody.

I've listened to Dream Theater for 10 years and never picked that up. No wonder the guitar solo sounded familiar. Wow
It's a recurring motif in the Metropolis saga. It is also repeated in Home, in the second chorus, with "Victoria" in place of "Metropolis".

That reference i picked up by myself, so cool
Maybe these kinds of reusing main(?) melodies through out the whole album is influenced by The Wall-Pink Floyd
