And it can happen insanely fast. For some all it takes is one loss and they never are the same. That’s the double edge sword of an undefeated record. Once the loss comes because it does for most, how the fighter handles losing the 0 will define the rest of their career in a lot of cases.

    • @GuerillaCatty73
      @GuerillaCatty73 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Very apt. People who covet but never tried, never made it, whatever, but circle a sport, find that they know better than the guys who did make it. GSP was on point: I have other things I want to do. Some guys don't. This is their thing. This is their life. This is where they get their purpose and validation, their self worth. To say you MUST retire because of X risks and something about legacy - the record of their prime still exists, no matter how it finished. The only drawback is if they are on the decline, never to get the old magic back, but they think they can. That is the only real danger zone. But to make a choice based on the love of what you do, maybe even the need for money, and finding they'd rather live now and bugger tomorrow... that's their choice. They are the ones there who know. They know what is in their hearts.
Tony... it's like they want him to go away because he's become inconvenient. It's cloaked in all of this concern... well, he appears to have lost everything but being in the UFC. Piling on and saying it's too awful and embarrassing... if he can wear the losses, why can't the viewers? That mental illness is constantly conflated with CTE in Tony's case, tells me no one is really paying attention, despite all the concern, all of that care they have for him.
So... farting about in the suburbs or staying in a game they love - again, if it comes with some nice rational reality that they are past their prime, it is different, it will be different - is dying for something. This is what passion can look like. Hanging on for longevity without the highs of performance, some people would rather not.

I think ilia's approach is wise, you can also acheive greatness and retire on a somewhat young age for mma, look at gsp, he had 9 title defenses by the age of 31 years old, but not everyone is gsp, i think looking at all these legends at a very old age suffering grusome losses changed this new generation's mentality, guys like chuck, tony, bj penn, frankie, everyone knows now that staying too long might ruin your brain and your legacy as well

I think if volk wants to turn the corner he is going to need to take a page from gsps book. Switch his game up, he has some of the best gnp in the division, some of the best timing and vision. If he starts training himself as a grappler like gsp I think he would be able to get back to being dominant.
That's what made gsp the goat, he evolved, changed his game when people started to catch up. It is inevitable that people catch up (what we see with illia now and the opposite with izzy) gsp was able to totally transform his game to keep himself dominant realizing his ego couldn't get the best of him and he needed to learn. Volk has the best blueprint to do that, start nailing takedowns and stop trying to outstrike these guys, their game has caught up to you, they get to watch years upon years of your footage.

I'm gonna say it: GSP, with colitis, taking down (look at how Bisping, a well rounded fighter, was capable of handling himself with grappling in close losses to wrestlers like Chael, Rashad and Hendo) and repeatedly outstriking the bigger Bisping (who had then beaten - repeatedly wobbling and dropping - Silva and KO'd prime Rockhold), at will, is far more impressive than Jones subbing Gane (who has 0 wrestling defence and was outwrestled by a learner wrestler like Ngannou) who has only beaten fat journeymen like Tuivasa and Lewis.

Ah the case of Manny Pacquiao. Dude boxed so long and even managed to nab a belt at his last few fights at age TooOld for boxing shocked everyone. You can definitely aim for till you cant do it professionally anymore or just drop it while people still love you but cant deny the appeal of the people still loving you even if you are showing signs of aging or slowing down and you are still shooting lightning bolts on your hands or whatever sport you have and still compete with the best but thats like a rare case. None of us can beat getting old since your recovery goes nuts at age 30+ and you start to get injured often so no spring chicken anymore so in a reality kind of thing your body just cant keep up with your passion on a legendary state coz we are getting stronger as eras pass like the next era will be faster and stronger just from standard of living alone.

  • @Menstral

AV would probably still be champ if 1) he wasn't foolish enough to try to move up a weight class (he is too short), and 2) if he wasn't knocked out so viciously, and 3) knocked out so recently, and 4) knocked out at his age.... because 5) the best indicator of another traumatic brain injury is that you have already had a traumatic brain injury
If AV desperately needed to compete for his mental health, do it in some different sport, or create your own sport. This is what Lance Armstrong should have done.

Its kind of a silly question because you'll never know what fight will be the ticking point where you can say its a "crossroads moment" in hindsight. A legend like volk, he could think that he'd want to beat ilia and retire as a legend, with perhaps the pursuit of islam again being what would ruin his legacy. Thats the brutality of the sport, people fall in an instant and there's no way to see it coming

Ali, frazier, tyson, holyfield, liddell, jackson, silva. Name a combat sport legend, they all fall victim to father time.

George Foreman may have been one of the few that father time didnt hit hard. World champion in two different era's, only lost 5 or 6 times to the best. Is still healthy, literate and financially stable going into his 70's

I think retiring early is defo the best option. Look at Khabib. 3 title defences and people call him the GOAT. Imagine if Silva retired early and didn't keep fighting. I personally don't count the losses out of your prime but everyone else does.

Ferguson is completely delusional. Gaethje and Chandler fights were hard to watch. He will most likely have to be saved from himself. I don’t see the guy retiring of his own will. It’ll take a brutal injury or fight and I just don’t want to see that happen. I’ve never been a huge fan but I remember Tony from Tuf and it would be sad to see him end him career that way. Hopefully he retires after his next Win but I would be surprised. If he’s able to get another one that is.

Gsp is a legend because of his long title reign.. and he lost multiple times in his career as well...
Thats very different to someone who only fights a handful of top lvl fights in their prime and retires young to protect their record just so naive fans think they'd never age and win all other hypothetical match ups..
The thing is, it never ages well over time.. recency bias will have some short term effect but the longer time goes on the numbers become more and more relevant and having 0 or a couple of losses but only fighting 30% the ranked opposition to ur peers wont make the cut..
Its differnet if you came in young and active and entered the top echelon 10+ fights ago, but if ur 30 just fighting ur first top 5 lvl opponent and looking to retire and call urself a goat.. ur a fraud

Its not falling off or losing it. Every fight takes a toll on your body. While newer guys haven't taken as much damage.
No lion stays king forever. You get older and slower and there will always be a new younger challenger. Becoming a legend means you remain a legend. Getting there is what seperates the classes of fighters

It doesn’t ruin your legacy to get old, el cucuy Tony in his prime is still one of the scariest 155ers ever. More of the concern as these fighters are getting old is not taking unnecessary damage.

Volks got a lot of fight left in him and these nerds are counting him out because they never even tried when they themselves had an opportunity.
People like to see successful people fail.

U gonna give volk a permanent job within UFC?! NO. TOM BRADY RETIRED BECAUSE THEY GAVE HIM WHAT HE WANTED ALL ALONG. A POSITION IN THE GREATEST LOVE OF HIS LIFE. NOT TO FADE INTO OBSCURITY. U gonna quit ur job as a CONTENT CREATOR?? No. Why u expect volk to quit his job?! If u dont like it, maybe go watch soccer ⚽️.
