The juxtaposition of Japan being given cheese and talking about player creativity meant that, for a moment, I half suspected they had tried to poison or drug Matt in real life.

@@timothymclean I'm sure, also just illegal in general. When you're playing games like this that can bring out a lot of emotions everyone needs to agree to keep things above board and in game. It kind of ruins the game if you're worried about your safety while playing it.
First time I ever watched this I expected a game master to walk up and inform him that the cheese was poisoned in game and he'd have to roll for something.

I believe Matt's face accurately reflected how a world leaders face would look during an alien invasion... i also believe a world leader at that point would be pissed off by fucking cheese.
Unless, of course, they hadn't eaten all day.
I'm still half way through the video. Loving every second of it. And I just realized that this game is all about the opposite of "sit down and shut up". It is actually about standing up and talking to people. Just though it was funny.

This was absolutely riveting to watch. I loved how the mood shifted from initial bewilderment (WTF expressions) to genuine anxiety and tension due to actions and revelations that constantly had players questioning each other's motives - even team-mates [Brendan]!
It would be fascinating to hear about the debrief for each country [Team], as well as each individual player.
I am definitely interested in participating in a Megagame event in the future at some stage.

I'm in the UK, so accessibility is not an issue. More time i.e. family commitments - fiancée and 3 month old son. Also about to complete on a house, so once we're all settled, I'll definitely look into attending sometime next year [2017].
Without this video + Jim Wallman's Watch the Skies, it's possible we wouldn't be running megagames in the UK today. Thanks SUSD, we've been running since November 2022 and it's been GREAT!

I love the idea of Watch The Skies. It's legit a big game of telephone but with nukes + hidden roles + Group Player choice in the form of nations.
I started watching this just to take in more SU&SD content despite my reservations to the concept. I didn't think the whole thing would hold up and I knew that at any second I would just skip to the end. I watched every second. I was blown away. Very entertaining and cool.
I legitimately go back and watch this once every couple of months.
So so good.

I watched the sequel to this first (the two parter episode from 2019) and now watching this one and loving these and would enjoy seeing more Megagames (when we can all go outside again lol) All this like candid moments of them just reveling in the chaos of it. Plus any video they allow themselves to swear in are pretty funny, this one and the Catacombs lets play are gold. xD
I know one of the guys who runs these, me and a couple of friends signed up to play a zombie version of this and was sceptical about the whole thing working and how serious people would take it but I have to say after a very very long and weirdly stressful day we left feeling like it was one of the most rewarding gaming experiences we have ever had, regardless of what games you like or even if your not that hot on games I would suggest giving it a go, a very unique experience that we have signed up to do again. Great vid btw

I've run two mega games in Sweden this last year and the reaction have been priceless from most particpants. We had around 30+ participants each time.
We ran two different versions of Watch the Skies.
The last one we even had one guy playing the US president as Trump. He immediatly declared that no Aliens were welcome in the US. It wasn't until turn 4 or 5 or so he pretended to even understand that the Aliens in this game was real Aliens, not illegal migrants. In the End, the US got nuked after Aliens and Japan had disarmed the US nukes with superior technology. (this was after the US had invaded Brazil)
This January we are running "Divided Lands" which is more historical. (The talks and the creation of the state of Israel the end of the 1940-ies)

The "Watch The Skies" episodes are easily my fav SU&SD videos. I even saved them on my PC so I can rewatch them should the world ever end. I really hope there'll be another edition of it this year! And for every year until the day I die.

My local megagame was about pirates and merchants, and my friend would play as the leiutenant governer of a port, and absolutely screw over all the merchants with fees and price fixing.
Wow, I actually got goosebumps at the end! Well done, from start to finish. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. :)

Came here after watching a lets play of demo Terra Invicta. It is amazing, the best part about such games like theese is that there really is no right answer, or rather you do not know WHY the alienss are here, could be conquest, they cuold be running from something, could just be a bodged first contact on their side. The fact that you do not underestand the alien gives credense to the peacfull solution. I love that.

This is my favorite SU&SD video. I watch it every couple of months and always laugh out loud about it. I had a chance to play this same megagame a couple years ago at GenCon and it was such a blast. Love this!

Just stumbled across this video a few days ago as I was working through the various Lets Plays. Found myself with a great stroke of luck when I went looking for anything that might be scheduled locally; turns out there is a Watch the Skies event scheduled just an hour away this coming Saturday. Definitely now an excited ticket holder

When watching people play a gigant board game is more interesting and better then anything in TV. This is awesome !
I've seen this video a few times and my favorite moment is still the moment when Matt has just had an interview with the media and suddenly turns the camera and goes "... Why did I say that?" and then has to explain to his entire cabinet that he told the press, with zero warning he was going to do this, that they'd "heard disturbing things about Iran and that [they'd] need to have a talk with our military allies," which led to panicked phone calls to Paul in the middle of a UN meeting to tell him "you need to tell them all we need to take a stance on Iran, just come up with something really convincing about Iran!"
Yes that moment is genuinely funny, but what I love about it is that I feel like it accurately simulates what politics during a crisis is actually like better than anything I've ever seen and the fact that it happened totally organically is just perfect.

This whole scenario was just the "Space Cash" episode of South Park where humankind completely fails the aliens' integrity test while claiming they weren't. 10/10

I did a Megagame once too! It was a very similar scenario where the aliens are somewhat peaceful, though they were a parasite type alien that actually only hoped to be able to coexist with their new hosts... We lost because a country, I can't remember which announced a global quarantine to scan people for traces of the aliens and we reached the last level of global panic. It was fun and I would without a doubt do it again.

There's a reddit list with all the known upcoming megagames on it called "Watch the Skies and other Megagames being organised in the future". It looks like the closest to you is Orlando.
Perhaps if you know some local board/RPG/LARP gamers you can start a megagame group yourself? The Watch The Skies setup pack and packs for plenty of other games are available for cheap online. If you can get a group of like-minded people together you can make them happen. I've seen it plenty of times.

Played that Game and it was ran poorly. The judges decided that we weren't playing with the standard win condition. Half way through the game. Still an amazing game. Just wish it's rules where followed a little better.
