You are a great teacher! i just unboxed my glastar diamond glass grinder that i purchased over a year ago and it is missing many parts. i haven't started this new hobby as my husband suffered a terrible cancer battle and now i have a lot of time on my hands. :( i understand glastar has gone out of business so am trying to figure out what i can do to sub for parts since they are no longer available. Love you videos! What’s you grinder set up? Is that just a plastic mat under the grinder? I’ve heard some people use like a fish tank and their side to grind in to contain the mess. Any suggestions?
Hi! I really love your videos! They have provided me a lot of info that I forgot about. I picked up stained glass again after taking classes like 10 years ago! My question is: do you use something over the sharpie to get it to stay better on the glass while grinding? I find that my sharpie lines disappear before I am able to grind completely. Thanks in advance! Keep being you and never stop what you're doing 💜

How often do you change your water in your grinder? Do use coolant in your grinder? Thank you very much
Everytime your done using it, it needs to be emptied and cleaned. I do not use coolant! 🖤
Do these glass grinders work on porcelain and broken pieces of ceramic?
I do believe they do, but I'm not positive. I would look into the specific grinders/bits and sew what manufacturers recommend.
I’ve been using the bit that came with the gryphette grinder and I’m finding that the glass I’m grinding is chipping around the edges which is making copper foiling difficult. I’m doing my best to not use too much pressure on the bit while grinding but I’m still having issues. Do you think this has to do with the bit I’m using or the glass or the technique? Thank you so much for these videos, they’re so informative.
Do you drain your water after every session?
Absolutely. But full disclosure, many people literally let it evaporate and just leave them until they need it next. Lol

I own several dremel tools and love them for all the different hobbies and crafts I enjoy ... is there a bit that I could use with my Dremel tool to grind and smooth glass ? I understand that having a dedicated glass grinder would be the ultimate way to do it if I was going to get into this seriously but just starting out would that be an option?
Any advice on how to get a bit off that seems stuck? I have the same grinder that I bought second hand and ive been unable to get the bit off to change 😔

On my grinder I can stack my bits. I like the convenience but I rarely use the small one. I just got a real small one you can actually grind a small hole in the glass with. Have you used those before?
Absolutely! I go over all different types of bits in my grinder bit video! I have not seen dichroic man, I actually do not watch/follow any glass content on social media! Strannggeee!! Thank you for watching!!
if you do not have grinding machine maybe like me use my radial harm scaw whit a jacob schuck in vertial mode easy powewrfull also able to use in horozontal mode ; maybe aphot later ;also as a pushing glass I use a 2 liter cap whit a lobster rubber around it cheap and safe

Ok so yes, i would agree. Usually thats a sign something isnt right. Not enough lubrication (water) or incorrect bit grit. Are you using the same brand and grit youve always used?

Thank you for explaining this so thoroughly! I got some used stained supplies from cl but I've been intimidated by the grinder and setting it up. I was wondering, if I'm practicing foiling/soldering on some of my glass pieces that were my practice glass for cutting, do I still need to grind it? Or should I grind it anyway, even though it fits perfectly, so I don't cut my fingers while foiling?
Awesome, I'm glad you found it helpful! And yes, I would suggest still grinding it! The only way to get familiar with the grinder it is to practice! Prevents slices and helps the foil stick too! Practice practice practice!! 🖤

The two I've shown on my channel are the only ones I'm truly familiar with and would recommend! The gryphette and the gryphon convertible if your into that jazz!

What type of soldering mat are you using? Also, have you ever used a radius grinder bit? Will the ripple grinder bit do the same thing? Thanks
Essentially yes, but the radius edger bit does not have the size options to actually fit different rippled glass. And soldering mat is legit just a soldering mat!

What do you do with the old "glass water" & sand that you clean out? Is it safe to go down the sink, or should it be disposed of another way?
Absolutely DO NOT put any glass mud, water or anything down your sink. I just posted a video on grinder care, and go over all of it much more in depth then my normal comments on it. Very last video I posted. 🖤

First, the grinding head can be adjusted up and down the drive shaft, just loosen the bolt, slide the grinder up or down a scotch, and tighten.
Second, I've installed the skinny bit atop the regular grinder using the bit of shaft poking out the top. It has worked fine, I only use it briefly and remove it immediately when going back to the main grinder.
Third, I have watched several of your excellent videos and I am amazed at your knowledge, at your ability to share, and that you can do any of this with those fingernails!

Good Afternoon Makenzie, This is a little off topic but, the grinder seems to make my nails split. I tried wearing finger tip protectors but nothing works. I am not using my nails agents the glass. Any ideas ? TIA
Oh jeez I have no idea!! Since mine are fake, I have zero tips on that front!!! Im sorry!! I imagine it's the water? I'm not sure!!!!

hello, i am cutting plain glass for practice. i noticed that after grinding, my edges on both sides are brittle, is there a way to polish the glass edges, or is it my grinding bit? it was given to me, so it may be old.

Unfortunately you need a grinder! For strength, quality and safety for the maker and buyer! (If your just testing things out to toss, skip grinding and practice the other steps!) 🖤
I actually used Diamond tile files. Found them at Home Depot for about $20. I change my craft preference so often that I wanted to be sure I liked the whole glass thing. My husband said I definitely put in the work so go ahead and get the grinder. Life changing !!OMG…,so much faster.
Do i have to buy a glass grinder?
If your going to make stained glass seriously, then yes. If you want to make like 1, random piece and never again then I'd say skip it. All glass edges need to be ground for foil strength and shape.

Probably not going to like this answer, but I feel honesty is always important. It's been a couple years now since I've worn one. I wear nothing now and jump in the shower. I left it in my grinding room and just threw it in the wash when it REALLY needed it!

Hi , is it possible to make beveled glass in this machine ?
I do not believe so. Buying beveled pieces are a pre done affair. However, because I've gotten so many questions recently about bevels, I am looking into an attainable way for regular people like us to do them. As with most glass info, Google is not much help but I would say start searching there. And know meantime that I'm working on a way to do them, as well as a very intelligent engineer and friend here on TH-cam. As soon as we have some answers and solutions I will absolutely do a video on making them. 🖤🖤

you should invest in a cheap drill press and diamond core bits from the big box stores to cut holes and a taurus ring saw and a c40 tall diamond band saw for fine detail. all of this is super good tools if affordable thanx for the tutelage.
Get 2 litter empty pop Plastic bottle poke hole in middle part put water in it cap take on and off it do stream water. Buy drill bit from menards it for tile glass 8 bucks the botlle put steam water while you are drilling easy cheap. Wet drill for holes like for flower plates holes !!

I do have a drill press and diamond core bits I bought a couple years ago. i also have a shed full of glass and glass tools such as a taurus saw a wet saw a gryphon C 40 tall for tricky stuff and then some . I need to get back at it.
I also have a jool tool and he disks for soft and hard rocks. that was a pricey tool

Finally got round to doing my first glass on glass mosaic, having watched this video, I purchased a grinder, (so worth it) and I’m now just waiting for the right piece of glass to mount my project on, thank you so much for your fantastic videos, I have learnt so much and putting it into practice is such fun. Hey! I love the video! I am a resin artist and want to venture into make custom hand mirrors in interesting shapes. Can you use this same process on glass mirrors?
Hello! Yes you can, however there is something called mirror rot that can happen which is why most artists don't use mirror what so ever. Sometimes the rot can happen after two days, or 2 months. So it's a scary material to use in stained glass, particularly when selling your work. Give mirror rot stained glass a Google, and do some reading. People have conflicting opinions on why this happens, or how to help stop it. I don't believe there is a sure way to stop it. Good luck. God speed. Lol!!
