Greg Lake was talented but also a wonderful human. A real sweetheart, my husband worked with him for some charity events. The world needs more Greg Lakes. ❤
Emerson Lake and Palmers set at Cal Jam in 1974. Greg had a little acoustic segment within their show. Just casually sitting on a stool singing, playing a 12 string acoustic guitar and singing his ass off while chewing gum and wearing sequins in front of about half a million people here. Just another day in the life of an early 70's rock legend superstar....You reacted to Lucky Man a few days back. That was Greg singing a song he wrote when he was 12.
As someone who was raised by a man who is maybe the most qualified person on earth to write an ELP biography - a true historian of the band and all three men as individuals - i think I've seen every single video of ELP that exists in the public realm. The only time I've ever seen Greg Lake perform live without gum in his mouth is a video from when he was still the lead singer of King Crimson, singing the song "Cat Food" on Top of the Pops in 1970. It's available on TH-cam. I've always remembered the details of it, because it shocked me to see him sing without gum! Greg Lake is one of the rare vocalists who possesses a voice that is "dually resonant." That refers to when a singer can access all areas of their vocal chords regardless of the note they're landing on, which makes it almost sound like two people are singing. He can sing as a pure tenor or as a pure baritone if he chooses, but when he is singing full-throated you can hear tenor and baritone concurrently. That's what gives his voice such a roundness and a haunting quality. Listen to his song "I Believe In Father Christmas" or ELP's "Ce La Vie" for great examples of his dual resonance.
Here is that King Crimson video - it's a trip for many reasons. Bizarre lyrics, a wild melody, a guitarist who is so expressionless that he looks like a mannequin. Truly bizarre! 😂 th-cam.com/video/CVjJ-h75kwo/w-d-xo.html
My husband was a musician and he told me the reason for the gum chewing was to keep their mouths moist while they were singing instead of drying out. Before someone slams me for saying this, check out John Lennon on the rooftop concert at Abbey Road. He's chewing gum. I also wish someone would talk about his perfect picking on that 12. He was a master. Playing acoustic with a 6 is hard enough. ❤️🎸🏏
I hear that! It keeps your throat moist. There is nothing worse for a singer than getting cotton mouth on stage and your vocal flaps stick together. You can get a bad case of the yaks! It's no fun.
They were just completing a concert tour of about 270 stops in a year. His vocal cords were pushed a little. Chewing gum and singing two things at once. EL&P were at the top of their game at this point. You need to hear the studio version. Haunting!
The dark glass on your eyes - hiding behind sunglasses. Though your flesh has crystallized- in cool, chill mood. No matter what, he's turned on. Some kind of wonderful lover. That's what I hear. 😎❣️
Greg Lake (RIP) was one third of the group Emerson Lake and Palmer, the other two members being Keith Emerson (RIP) on Keyboards and Carl Palmer on Drums. Greg played both Guitar and Bass on some songs, but mostly Guitar, he was also the Vocalist. "Still you Turn Me On" was his biggest solo hit, but ELP had quite a few hits, such as "Lucky Man", "Welcome Back My Friends", "Karn Evil 9". There is great footage of ELP during the winter at the Montreal Olympic Stadium playing their asses off.
As previous comment, check out the studio version. It's really so tastefully produced with no percussion, just some beautiful keyboard parts played by Keith Emerson and with a gorgeous warm synth bass underpinning the track. One of my favourite ELP tracks.
friend, Greg Lake of Emerson Lake and Palmer. ELP. Top 5 rocking prog band of all time. That was like the band taking a break and Greg just entertains. But They rock hard.
What a voice and what a talent. That performance was in front of 300000 fans. Its a tv broadcast. He was part of ELP which was an instrumental band. I think he had written that song when he was 12.
Apparently it wasn't a big deal to chew gum and sing and Greg Lake wasnt the only 70s singer to do so. It seemed it helped keep the mouth and vocal chords lubricated while singing.
I am so glad that you did this song and the live version, since you just did ELP's Lucky Man. Yes, the sound quality sucks, but see him just casually sing us this beauty makes up for it.
Hi Biz, l saw Greg Lake a year or two before he passed away in a little theater in L.A, he played everything that l wanted to hear including this song, which is my favorite 👍🏻🤩
Saw the Greg Lake Band in the early 80's with Gary Moore. A great concert consisting of ELP & King Crimson material and Gary Moore songs plus as an encore they did a Beatles medley!
I think he is describing his own life in fame. Maybe a note to his legion of female fans that try to be evrrything fir him abd it just doesnt matter to him. His life is crazy enough without adding crazy to the mix. And i think its also his own reasoning to choosing this kind of crazy rock n roll lifestyle...which at times he wants to throw in the towel. So why does he do it because he loves what he does It turns him on. Thats my take on it.
Emerson Lake and Palmer ❤. Try “In The Beginning “ and yes he is chewing gum 😂! “C’est La Vie” is another mind blower 🤯🤯. ELP is awesome and you will fall in love with them. Also try some Joni Mitchell “Help Me” 💙💙
Your Music Mirrors Your Mind Song suggestion: It Hurts Band/Artist: Greg Lake Album: Greg Lake Frontman singer for Emerson Lake and Palmer His first solo effort RIP December 7 2016
From the same concert copy and paste on TH-cam ---> Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Karn Evil 9 1st impression, part 2.(Cal Jam,1974) Remastered by RudenkoArt ... This has the best sound but he did add the last part of part 1 to get all of the carnival barker section. Includes fantastic DRUM SOLO
It's an absolute joy watching your journey of musical discovery. I think that there are several Greg Lake tracks that you should check out: "C'est La Vie" "Closer To Believing" "Lend Your Love To Me Tonight" (Actually, all of side two of the album "Works, Vol. 1" plus "Pirates" - a full ELP work with vocals by Greg.)😊 "From The Beginning" "Benny the Bouncer"😊
Definitely listen to the studio version. Much better. From the Beginning, Knife Edge and Karn Evil 9 are some other good ones. The full version of Karn Evil 9 is over 29 minutes long. But there are shorter versions. I have the one played on the radio which is close to 5 minutes long. I personally find it great to listen to and much easier to digest than the full version.
In this concert while all playing together in KarnEvil9 1st impression part 2 there is a video of that that shows them killing it. Carl Palmers drum solo in it is #1 insane.
I like your review.... That recording is from 1974 that's why it's grainy . They are an English band who refused to be blues based and instead wanted to be based off classical music and sound European instead of American. As far as the lyrics go it sounds like someone is putting some undue expectations on the writer that he wants to climb out of but yet he still likes them . Or he could be writing about himself.
Also , he is chewing gum because he wants to keep his saliva flow going so his vocal cords are wet. Ed Sharon could not hold a candle to Greg Lake . Emerson Lake and Palmer cared more about the art than the money. The art carried them through.
Wow luv this song back then and still today I realized what I learned from it. Biz you take me so far back. I am so glad I found this channel I hate to admit my age but you are doing it right. NOW please get back to some J Giels and Aerosmith I will fight for them forever
Incredible 2 and a half ton drum kit explained . On TH-cam --->Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and ASIA Talks Stainless Steel Drums ... Watch this for yourself then do the 1st ever electric drum solo in a song called ... ELP Toccata studio version ...
You have to do the studio version from Emerson Lake and Palmer 's album Brain salad surgery with Emerson's Moog synthesizer in between the still you turn me on's
Keith Medley worked for Gibson. He was theif neck guru as i understand.I heard you mention you were into acoustic. He built a 27 string and plays the shit out of it.The man's music is awesome. Seriously, take the time and listen to ANCESTORS, and QUESTIONS. Listen through good headphones. Get comfortable, close your eyes and let him take you on a journey. Nuff said. He's that good. Enjoy my man.
😅I apologize. I'm weak at times. Just one more and you'll never hear from me again. You know what's worse than an elephant on your piano ? A chiggers on your organ. If John Lennon widow had married Sony Bono, her name would have been yoko Ono Bono. Peace.
Lost me on this one. I listened but just didn't hit that spot in my spirit. It wasn't horrible, just not my kind of music. It's good to listen to different things though, you never know!
@@tomroome4118 Thanks for taking the time to tell me! I will. I remember listening to Emerson, Lake & Palmer with my cousins and liking their music. Thank you again!

His music touches me deeply, and I don't know exacrtly why. Amazing songwriter and musician.
He was ripped !! Emerson, Lake & Palmer was one of my favorite bands, loved all of them individually and collectively.
While this live version is nice for those who are familiar with the song, I'd recommend listening to the studio version.
Same here. I call the studio version the WOW WOW WOW song because of the way Greg uses the Wah Wah peddle to say WOW.
I prefer this version. The studio version is nice, but I think there's too much Keith in it and it takes away from the guitar.

my high school choir director would send you to detention if he caught you chewing gum. lol.
He may've been sponsored by Wrigleys. 'Chew wanna be an angel, chew wanna be a star... etc etc' It's subliminal product placement!!!
Many so called artists of today couldn't chew gum and walk at the same time.
Greg Lake can stand on his own - h doesn’t need you to put down others to make him look better
Omg that smile when he says “it all gets so intense” and chewing gum the whole time ❤😂 love him❤RIP Greg🙏🏻
