- Today we take a tour of the damage to my property after a CRAZY Wind and ice storm on 1/13/24. We lost almost a dozen trees and have more ice in the forecast. ENJOY!
- แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
Just remember that blow downs are usually under stress, so be careful and take time to have a plan before sawing. A sudden release of all that stress in wood can be deadly. Study it first and make a plan to keep yourself in the clear zone if things move suddenly. Heck you probably know all that but it does not hurt to be reminded. Even the best can make a mistake or forget for a moment. Good luck and best wishes.
I hate trying to cut up tangled logs. A log truck driver we used for a long time was killed simply unbinding a load of firewood logs a few years ago. There’s definitely danger involved.
Hey, we're just down the road a piece from you (Linn County) -- same icy landscape and brisk temps. I can't claim we dodged a bullet, yet. I also made a "walk-about" inspection yesterday, with (so far) only one skinny Doug-fir pushed over from ice/wind. I know I'll find more, but nothing like you folks had. With all that wind-throw timber, looks like lots of Owl boxes and Bat houses in your near-future!
I'm with you, got to keep the hummer-birds happy, they're relying on us for nectar!
Stay warm and cheers from your Neighbor to the South.
Thank you! Hopefully you faired well. I have a friend that builds bat boxes and owl houses from cedar I mill. I wonder if he could use this hemlock.
Hemlock not as good/longevity as cedar, but, hey, anyone building owl boxes is aces in my book!@@NorthwestSawyer
I'd like to order some cedar fencing, fir 2x8's and hemlock board and batten. Maybe a few cords of firewood too. Just kidding. I see a lot of cleanup followed by even more sawing. And, of course, cha-ching. Glad everyone is safe and your structures are intact. 👍👍👍
Thank you! You hade me going for a second there!😂
Glad your family is safe, and it didn't do much damage to your structures. Like you said, the upside to this is it won't all be wasted. You'll be able to get several mill logs out of it.
Thank you! I definitely have my work cut out for me.
Wow that must have been a powerful storm to do all that damage!….nature can be a beast sometimes…the good thing is nobody got hurt…👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
It was crazy, Chris! We’re just now starting to thaw out.
Mother Nature's power can be awesome. On the bright side, you now have a few videos worth of clean up and yarding content plus all of the raw materials for more milling videos. 😉
That is a fact! I’m sore just thinking about…. All the editing😂
Wow, you have a lot of work ahead of you cleaning your property.
A lot of nice material on the ground.
Hopefully you have a nice wenching system to get the material out.
One more thing, that sure is a nice access road on your property. May God grant you the strength for the task ahead.
We got cold, 13 degrees F Saturday morning and dusting of snow, but, luckily no wind. We still haven't gotten above freezing here in NW Washington. Stay warm and safe - spring is right around the corner.
I hope so!😂 we’re finally above freezing today. Just a ton of rain in the forecast now.
Holy Smokes is right!! Glad everyone is ok!
It’s a mess, Eric!😂
@@NorthwestSawyer I bet! Looks it!
*- **6:13** helped me understand the girth of all the trees you were showing us.*
*- After that I understood that what I thought were 1-2 ft. dia. trees were really 2-4 ft. dia. timber.*
*- Wow ! Was really surprised at how poorly I was gauging what I was seeing.*
*- I grew up logging a bit for paper mill pulp wood: white pine, spruce, and fir, with some oak, maple, mixed in and most of that rarely got over 3 ft. diameter.*
*- I had no appreciation of how youtube cameras make tall timber look much younger than it is.*
It’s definitely hard to gauge things on camera. The largest downed tree was probably 3’ or so. I do have some cedars that are closer to 4 or 5’ still standing. I also have logs that were cut around 80 years ago that are over 6’. The stumps have notches cut in them for the spring boards they used to use.
Wow, what a storm that must have been! You really have a lot of damage. Glad everyone is OK. The kids and your dog were having a great adventure outside. We've been in a deep freeze here also, minus 2 degrees all day today. I'm hunkered down by the woodstove.
It was really crazy, John! The wood stove in my shop couldn’t keep up. I had to break out my diesel heater.
I got your package! I’ll be getting to it soon. Thanks again!
WOW! Glad you and family are OK. Please take extra care on the clean-up.
Thank you, I will
I got hit by the same storm up here on Whidbey Island lots of damage and very cold. I hope your Mom is staying warm with the power out power was out for only one day here.
Thank you! Her power is still out. She’s been staying at my sister’s house. Hopefully you escaped any major damage!
Good lumber and a few nice looking bowls. 🍁
Hopefully the logs aren’t shattered from the fall. We’ll get a better look once it warms up.
@@NorthwestSawyer good luck. 👍
Stay warm and very safe for you and the family.
Thanks, you too!
Thank goodness the trees just fell where they could do no harm Jason. I was worried about our property with the tremendous windstorm that tore through the other night. Great video thumbs up.
Thank you, Craig! I have some work ahead of me 😉
Have fun stay safe keep warm bless you and yours
Thank you, Joseph!
Take care and stay warm!!
Thank you!
You’ve got your work cut out for you and lots of firewood for a while. Glad everyone is safe.
Thank you! I’ll
Definitely be busy😉
That's an unreal amount of damage, Jason. We had 3 days of 50+ mph winds last week but nothing as bad as what happened to you. Now we're into single digit temps and no relief in sight for at least another week. At least your kids were making the best of it.
Bill
They have been loving it, Bill! We’re finally thawing out today. Stay warm!
Warm there. It is 9 degrees here -9 wind chill. Warmest it has been for a few days. Sunday it was -11 temp, -36 wind chill. 40-50 mph winds. So we feel your pain.
Keep warm! We’re finally above freezing this morning but there’s a lot of ice to melt.
Glad that you are all okay. Looks like you have some clean up then milling to do.
Thank you! We’re finally thawing out today but I think I’m going to wait a bit on the mess. It’s definitely going to be a project.
Jason, lots of work to put on a list. But the close in your video makes you forget about it for now, just to laugh and enjoy your children being carefree, living in the moment.Thats what living is, and that's priceless, being a kid.
I’ll be honest. I spent a lot of time looking out the window hoping for snow myself😂 always a kid I guess
Hey man. When you do cut these damaged trees , be extremely careful . I k ow you have experience, but I have had issues . Had a 4" limb fall once and stick in ground less than 3 ft. From me . Beside me .maybe even have an extra person with you . And be sure to have a hard hat handy . Will come in handy . Take care and good luck , stay safe .
We've been getting dumped on down here,we just came out of flood watch and our local Napa river(tidal river)is running real high, glad you didn't sustain any damages ✌️ Napa California
I’ve been seeing California getting hammered, Sean! Crazy! Stay safe down there!
@@NorthwestSawyer I emptied my rain gauge at noon yesterday so in 16-18 hours we had 2"we are in flood watch for the he Napa River at St Helena & here in Napa
Glad you didn’t have it worse! Here’s hoping you don’t have to make a sequel with todays ice predicted. Stay safe and be well!
Thanks, Rob! I was actually wondering if the ice took care of your tree removal issue…🤔😬
Nice family day out . Some one has a lot of spring cleaning to do , who could that be I wonder
Wow my brother! So fortunate none of them big fellas landed on anything but mother nature. Glad to hear you're all doing well, except for being a little cold.
It's down in the 30's here which is pretty unusual for the central coast. We lost power a couple of times for a few hours, but the wood stove is a life saver....literally.
Well, looks like you got quite a bit of content to keep you busy this year! Be safe, my friend!
Thanks, Gary! My mom lives in Lake Oswego and lost power for four days I think. She had to go stay at my sister’s house. We lucked out and only lost it for a couple hours. Probably because I had three cans of gas ready to go in my generator 😂
Please take care when you and your family are out and about
Hey there, was wanting to reach out and let you know I truly enjoy your videos, and see a fellow Oregonian on TH-cam. My channel isn't sawmilling, but I did work in one for 16 yrs. Keep it up
Thank you! I’m filming a resin and wood project right now that I hope to post this weekend. I’ll stop by your channel!👍👍
Thanks for stopping by my channel and subscribing. Looking forward to seeing more of your projects
I ventured out this afternoon in South Salem, and the sleet/freezing rain was so heavy over the snow that the car made absolutely no tracks on it. And, more freezing rain tomorrow 🥶
That’s what I hear! The kid’s school already called it. Stay warm down there!😉
You're gonna have a lot of fun with all of that
That’s an understatement 😂
Stay safe.
We're in North Seattle and going through about the same,
Not as rough as you, though!!
Stay safe 😊
Thanks, you too! We’re finally thawing out today. Hopefully you are too.
Here in southern Michigan it's about 10 right now and has been in that general area, and below, for the last 3 days. Sat and Sunday were very windy. Good time to do inside stuff
Absolutely! But you guys get the cold weather a lot, don’t you? It hasn’t been this cold here in decades.
@@NorthwestSawyer Not really. With a predominate west wind the air comes over Lake Michigan and warms up. It can be 10 in Milwaukee and it will be about 25 by me. Plus I'm far enough away from the lake that I get very little lake effect snow
Oof. You had it bad. Glad everyone is ok. We has 22 in snow and 6 ft drifts here in East NE. The bad weather got a lot of folks it sounds like.
Wow! We never see snow like that. And it’s a good thing😂
We may get some ice tonight here in central Alabama. I certainly hope it's nothing like that!! Good luck with your clean-up efforts.
Thank you!
Dang dude!🤯That is an insane amount of sleet!!!😱 It looks like you'll be busy with those trees, I'm guessing.😳💯
I hope you have a safe and warm ice storm day tomorrow!🫡🙏😎✌️
Thanks! It’s a mess for sure but we’re finally thawing out today.
I hope no one was hurt in your area, Jason. Looking like more sawmill work in the future for you!
I haven’t heard of anyone getting hurt but my mom lives 45 minutes from me and her power has been out for two days now.
Sorry about the damage to your forest…..lots of fire wood for a couple years.😊
Yeah. Unfortunately hemlock isn’t great firewood. I may try to make some lumber out of some of it. We’ll see how badly it’s damaged.
Kids having fun. Lot of work to be done more logs is a good thing
They definitely had a great few days. We’re finally thawing out today.
Sorry for you down there. The fire a few years ago, and now downed trees. The last couple days have been below freezing here outside of Seattle. It looked like a number of the trees could have used twenty to thirty more years but should make some lumber. I like the broad leaf maple over the eastern maples, because it has character, and varying color in the grain. I like the alder, because it makes good furniture, like drawer fronts and bookcases, because the grain has an iridescent grain. I wonder if you can get a drag chain from your shop down the cliff to some of the trees, and keep your tractor off the narrow path?
Thank you! I’ll have to come up with something. Some of those trails are way too steep to try and drag logs out of.
I bet that your Olights are very useful when the power is down. I'm currently experiencing loadshedding (scheduled power outages in South Africa) and using my Freyr to continue working in the dark.
You are 100% right. I’m fortunate to have a stockpile of them that I make sure are topped off when we’re expecting weather.
It’s been pretty cold here in north Idaho as well.
I think you guys are a little more used to it than we are😉
Nature's fury and beauty creating saw mill food!
I’m going to need to get some more blades!😂
A lot of work ahead of you to clean up the mess.
That is the truth! I’m going to let it warm up a bit😉
Looks like you could build a whole house with all those downed trees
You’re not wrong!😂
Looks like you got a lot of work ahead of you glad all are safe . hope you get some thing you can salvage ?
Thank you, William! There has to be something there I can use😉
Snow, ice, limbs everywhere some trees in the woods down.normal for mich.n the biggest problem was the ground had to frost yet.we lost power for 12hrs.you got a mess buddy.be safe
It was all in a span of about two hours. I was worried one would hit my shop so I called it a day early😂
Ours took the better part of 3 days.5 to 6"s of snow but 45 mph gust.
Lots of new logs to cut up.
I’ll have a busy spring and summer for sure.
Lots of sawmill material and tractor, grapple and chainsaw work.
You got that right!
Wow, yup got a real mess there. Looks like you will have some logs to mill and some stuff to put on your lathe.
That’s an understatement 😂
@@NorthwestSawyer yeah, it's an understatement. I'd like to see you turn some of that hemlock.
@@timrauscher3965 I never thought of trying to turn it. It’s such a soft wood, I’m not sure how it would go. Definitely worth a try!
@@NorthwestSawyer there's another video for you to make.
Man, that sure looks like you have months of clean up, weather you want it or not. As long you and your family are safe that is what is important........🌲 btim
It’s a bummer that it’s hemlock. Not the greatest log for lumber.
Glad everyone and buildings all ok. Quite a storm. Just unusually strong winds or were they (also) from an unusual direction?
Thank you! It was a combination of very strong winds and ice buildup. It’s a bad combination here
Dang Jason wished we lived closer I would let you borrow my cat 518 grapple cat to clean up the bomb zone, oversized rzr😅
It's still Alder. Just because it fell in the woods and nobody was around to hear it, doesn't mean that it ceased to be...
It’s rotten Alder😉
I know that sucks at least you got a lot of wood to cut up to make to make projects with
That’s for sure! Lots of videos to make😉
We are in Central Washington and the temperatures reached 7 below. Wind chills were much lower than that. Thankfully we did not get much damage as you did. A lot of logs to dress?
Yikes! Thats too cold! I’ll have to see how damaged the logs are. Some of them are likely split pretty badly from how they landed.
Hmmm. Maybe a logging winch for your tractor? 😉
I would love to find a good deal on one😉
I'm enjoying a nice 19c deg at the moment. Last Wednesday I passed my Health/Fitness test to go into surgery so now just waiting for call after that will maybe able to walk again without crutches. Hip replacement.
Good luck, Barry! I hope it all goes well. I remember going to visit my dad in the hospital when he had a hip replaced. He was walking the same day. They really seem to have it down.
@@NorthwestSawyer yes instead of putting you fully under, they do spinal epidual with morphen so you are awake all the way through operation quicker at other end.
@@barryhansen6854 wow! Well, again, good luck! Keep me posted.
@@NorthwestSawyer will do.
Good evening Jason. Glad you and your family are ok. What part of Oregon do you live in? Stay safe and warm. God bless.
Thank you, Jim! We’re outside of Estacada. About 50 minutes south and east of Portland.
This is what we deal with annually in Oklahoma
You can have your weather back!😂 we’re finally thawing out today.
Heck im in Alabama and have all those same problems
That’s what I’m seeing! It’s a crazy weather year already.
Glad nothing valuable was damaged. You have some more logs to mill later, provided they didn't shake and break up inside.
Thank you! Hemlock definitely isn’t my first choice to mill but those maples will be nice.😉
Is hemlock a softwood is that way so many of them are down?
It’s very soft. They do make lumber out of it but it’s not my favorite.
We also had a heat dome a few years ago where we had three days over 110 degrees and one day it got to 120. The hemlocks cooked really bad. I thought most of them were going to die. That may have had something to do with their weakness.
I can only imagine the weight those had to hold with the ice coating and then the high wind really put those ice laden trees to the test.
Are you going to be able to use most of them Jason?
We’ll have to take a closer look once it warms up hemlock isn’t my first choice but I’ll see if they weren’t shattered in the fall. It’s such a soft wood.
@@NorthwestSawyer Ah, you see I was thinking that Hemlock would have been a hardwood,.. shows you that I have something to learn about wood then, doesn't it.
What is your approx location? We own about 250 acres of filberts in Springfield. Today is 25 Jan and we still don’t know the full extent of the damage. We were without power for 11 days but thank God we still had running water, hand warmers (my yearly Christmas gift from my mil), a fireplace and just enough wood and old bamboo stakes (one days worth left) that kept 3 adults and our dog from freezing. Our BioLite camp stove was our sole source for hot water, coffee and sustenance. My willow tree split in two and thankfully did no damage when it hit our house. Unfortunately, my car was not so lucky. One tree decided it wanted to blossom and become very intimate with the back half of said car…
Wow! That sounds terrible! I’m in Estacada. My sister lives in SW Portland and her car was clobbered by a tree also. It’s the second time for that Subaru. It might be a sign. 😂 we definitely got lucky with the power, only losing it for a couple hours. A few years ago we lost it for nine days, which also shuts off our water. Hopefully your orchard isn’t too badly damaged!
Get that woodmizer ready!
It’s always ready😉
Topless is good , except when it comes to trees . Nice walking trails .
Looks like you will be a logger for a bit .
I agree😂 luckily nothing landed on anything important.
Great shame to see all the damage that was done, never like to see trees brought down, take so long to grow. On the plus side no one was hurt which is most important and you have lots of timber to play with.
That’s true! Another problem is with those trees gone, the underbrush starts going crazy. It’s a maintenance nightmare.
@NorthwestSawyer Yes it has caused a lot of extra work, which you could do without. I know how you feel , good luck.
Ah the simple joys of childhood. Hopefully you can get something out of that maple.
It looked like the dog was having a good time too😂. I’ll definitely be working on those logs this spring.
You need to find someone who has a sawmill
That’s a good idea!😂
