Flip flops are fine in the house. But as a guy, I wouldn't wear them on public transport, in shops, restaurants, at work etc. Even when my wife and I visited Sicily last summer, I only wore flip flops around the hotel and to the beach. Trainers and short socks were sufficient. When we went to Mount Etna, the tour guide advised everyone to wear suitable footwear and some guys still turned up in flip flops. There are guys who go into pubs and such in flip flops and they just look ridiculous.
