Good solid common approach is usually the best method. I cast a lot of metal and making the sand molds i know exactly what you're talking about not having draft on the side pieces it makes it impossible to remove the pattern without destroying the sand mold. Enjoyed the lessons in carbon fiber Sr. Old school method to a new age project.
I made a small fairing for the tail of my. Panther with carbon fiber it turned out really nice but I had enough of working with the stuff too last me a long time.
If I was doing this, I would've 3d printed the circle, laid it on the table with cloth on top, then put peel ply and breather over it and vacuumed it down. That would've given all the compression and accurate shape, and eliminated the wet handling.
before you put the plugs in add a dab of vaseline to your hands and then wipe your hands on the block surface all over ... then install the block ..the vaseline should work as a lubricant even after the resin has hardened

What kind of epoxy n resin are you using n fiber?
