I’m a 53 year old woman. Today’s my 53rd birthday. I worked in a hospital for the entirety of Covid. Our thanks is the hospital is closing in 2 weeks. So I went and bought a drum kit, something I always wanted. It’s set up in the basement and I am really learning from you. It’s cathartic to just jump into something you were always “too busy” to do and see how much joy it gives you. I am glad I found this video. Thank you!

I also started during first Covid lockdown with buying an electronic kit from ebay. I was 53 years old and although I wish I’d done it sooner I’m so happy I did finally make the jump. You’re lucky to have a basement so you can have an acoustic kit - that’s my dream! I found that even 20 minutes a day on the drums lifts my spirits and improves focus. Keeping on building new neural pathways and nailing new beats.

I am a dance teacher and chorepgrapher, come from a musical family ( Dad and granddad were organist choirmasters in England . I started playing oiano at age 5 but regretfully quit. As i get older (59) i find that my mental/ physical dextetity is waning and my coordination is a bit off. I have always lived "The Police" and Stu Copeland my fave drummer so i discided that since i can't rub my tummy and pat my head at the same time anymore that i was going to try my hand(s) at drums. I clean my place of worship so have had the place to myself. Your class is wonderful and i love your style of teaching. Not sure i will ever say "Mr Copeland eat ur heart out" but i am having so much fun. Tyvm 4 sharing ur gift freely x

Thank you. I’m a 66 yr. old woman. I haven’t played drums for over 35 yrs. I started playing on my own at age 15, but at that time, it was very unpopular for females to play drums, so everything I learned was by ear, playing to the stereo. I was pretty decent, but moved and didn’t play until now. I decided to learn from the basics and work up from there.

    @infamous6459 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

If you’re a beginner, you need to learn that progression takes time and effort. Don’t try and rush your progress because you’ll become really sloppy. This was a mistake I learned when I started playing. I was wondering why I sounded so bad...I was in a hurry to progress. In several years I was performing at concerts and talent shows. Once I found my mistake, I took my time and practiced any day I could.
The smallest mistake will mess you up big time. Videos like this are so helpful because it’ll spark your brain to catch what you’re doing wrong.

I am so excited I found these lessons. I am a 58 year old Grandma/great grandma and I have always wanted to play the drums. I finally got an electric drum set for Christmas and have been bashing about on it without a clue what to do. I’ve looked at other lessons on TH-cam but just couldn’t get the hang of it. I have spent all of today working on these two beginners lessons and I am really getting into it. So exciting, you have no idea. I’ve subscribed and taken a look at the web site. Shan’t be looking anywhere else now. On my way with this. Can’t wait.

So I picked up the acoustic guitar instead. I'm at a place in my life where its now or never with getting things done so I went and bought a nice used 5 pcs set up couple of days ago and now looking online for "pointers" and came across yours. I'll be drumming along with your guidance as I enjoy what you are doing. I know music and timing etc.... and have rhythm so I'm hoping you and I can teach this old dog a new trick or two!! 25 year old nb here, got my first drumset last Christmas. I never really realized how vital the drums were to the tone and rhythm of music until I listened to one of my favorite albums stoned and ended up hyperfocusing on the drummer. Absolutely blew my mind and I’ve been paying closer attention to the drum segments of all my favorite music since. I’ve played piano and trumpet when I was younger, but there’s something about the drums that’s just a lot more fun to play. Getting the hang of new rhythms and being able to pick up speed is euphoric, and even if I never end up playing for a band, playing just for the sake of the hobby and letting off steam is incredibly fun. I haven’t been able to find any teachers in my area, but your youtube lessons have helped me come a long way. Keep doing what you’re doing man!

Yay, thank you Mr Stephen, I love your method of teaching, I got three brothers and they all play drums, piano and guitar and the African talking drum, but none of them have the time to teach me coz they are never home, the little I know (been playing amateur for 3 years and still dont know a lot) I picked it up from watching them play whenever they rehearse for church when they are around, and I'm a singer so no time for sitting at the drums either, that's y I got on youtube looking for videos to help ☺

Hi Stephen. I listened to the Jim Hall sextet recording of Concierto de Aranjuez twice a day for 3 weeks while travelling back and forth to the hospital to visit my Mum. I became obsessed with Steve Gadd's drum line. I got back home and told my daughter I wanted to learn to play it.
2 days ago, my daughter set up the drum kit I bought her when she was 13 and I have started learning! I'm 66 next week. I'm planning to be able to play a version of Steve Gadd's line one day but 2 days in I'm just loving learning a new skill. My daughter has got me started but she's away for the weekend and I found you online. Thank you so much for the free lessons.

Thanks for these lessons. I shared this on FB yesterday... So most of you know me musically as singer songwriter, producer, event/concert coordinator, guitar player with a couple of years of piano lessons. But did you know that for the first 10 years of my musical life, aside from choruses, I was a drummer? My family couldn’t afford for me to have a drum set, but I owned a snare. In marching and concert band I played
Snare, Cymbals, Bass Drum, & lots of other percussion instruments that belonged to the school. I’m happy to have something to remember and hone new skills!

Hi Bud - just to echo Mr F below, Im a similar age and back in the day wanted to play drums so went to a teacher to begin learning how to play. First lesson - walked in to a studio with 2 or 3 kits set up and was told to sit behind a practice pad and began learning rudiments. That was it...for another 6 months thats all I did without getting behind a kit at all. Was told "you cant play drums until you become competent at rudiments". Became so bored and dispirited I stopped going and that was that. This of course was before Internet and YT etc. Something Ive always regretted and rued what might have been if only Id tried harder and stuck to it. Jump to now and see lots of your ( and others) lessons here and see you can learn from behind a kit from day 1. Finally got the kit Id always wanted and for 2 years now Ive been feasting on all the great teachers here helping others and am having a ball. As for back then, I dont know of any music tutoring where you learn to play without playing the instrument - ah well better late than never I guess - but how my life could have been so different if only... Without being too dramatic - thanks to you and your colleagues for helping me get my life back.

This is excellent we bought our son an electronic drum kit for Chrismas to compliment his school drum lessons he's been having and to try an ween him off the gaming console, as learning an instrument is such a good skill to have, (I play guitar). Even I have been 'having a go' at a basic drum groove and want to expand my skill set. I'm natually left handed yet play guitar right-handed but drums I'm leading on the hi-hat with my left so not to mess with setting up the kit for my son. excellent way to deliver the knowledge.
I'm 52 years old, I play electric guitar at intermediate level. I am also naturally musical, and it comes easy for me.
I bought electric piano recently, and learnt the notes, and memorized Bach's Prelude in C Major.
Then I started composing my 1st song ever, both on the guitar and piano combined.
I also bought Focusrite digital interface, and started recording my 1st song.
Then I needed drums, so I programmed them in Reaper software, and it sort of did the trick, but it was boring. Of course I could program more sophisticated drum beats/transitions etc, but it sounded artificial, robotic.
Then I bought NUX DM-8 electronic drum set, and now I need to learn how to play drums. I was playing without any lessons whatsoever, and I did make some basic improvements, I play with a clicker to learn to play evenly.
So your lessons are exactly what I need as we speak.
Of course I know nothing about drum kits, but I fine tuned the hihat, and it feels right, of course I would need a professional drummer to evaluate the NUX DM-8 hihat, but to me as a beginner, it seems to be doing what it's supposed to. It plays open and closed sounds, and even seems like it smoothly transitions the in-between stage. It also has muting feature when you touch the edge.
I actually compared NUX DM-8 to Roland TD27KV and to me NUX sounded better, especially hihat. Also Roland discouraged me with the plastic rims inside the toms, which I kept hitting with the sticks, and it was very annoying.
NUX DM-8 has a "real" hihat stand, and the plate moves nicely up and down. Also all the drums were bigger in diameter than Roland's.
Yes I know, most people would choose Roland because of the brand, but I compared them, and NUX sounded better to me.
I also have NUX piano, and my daughter has Roland piano, and I believe NUX sounds better than Roland.

Awesome stuff, man. I've been singing and playing guitar and bass in several projects over the years, but drums have always intimidated me. My brother just starting learning by watching your videos, recommended you to me, and I can tell ya after this video I'm not intimidated anymore. I'm having a blast learning from you.

Stephen, i am almost 59 and have always wanted to play the drums. Bought my first kit a few days ago and came across you videos. Now i have also looked at a few others but none seem to be as in format able as yours. You make me want to learn more and be better. I was able to pick up on your first lesson, “ the money beat” in a short time. Thanks for doing these videos and i plan on watching everything you have. I would recommend these for anyone getting started plus the ones who already play.
    Thanks again Stephen,

I'm a Grandad who plays with, rather than plays, guitar, keyboard, banjo, sax and hand percussion. I don't want my grandson to play with but to actually PLAY his choice of instruments well.....unlike me. I notice in his playing. piano and guitar, some prob's with rhythm. I'm going to try to learn rudimentary drum stuff, just like Stephen's beginner lessons, and pass it on to him in time with his progress. This is going to be much more about improving his inbuilt metronome than actually playing drums although it clearly has the potential to be enormous fun!! I think I've stumbled upon something great here. Thank you Stephen.
    Chris.

Thank you for being a fantastic teacher. I am a 64yr old guitarist and vocalist. Never ever considered learning drums!! Not my kind of instrument i thought. Had a little play with a friends drum kit about 2 years ago, and fell in love with them! But, i never thought to go any further with learning them as i thought it was too difficult. Until, i saw this beginner video of yours. This coincided with a friend buying me an early christmas present of an electronic drum kit! Well, i have got to use it now haven't i! Thank you once again:)
