  • This project started by enthusiasts has created many DIY and consumer grade projects. This is one of several receivers that take advantage of the great NXP TEF6686 radio chip. AM (Medium Wave), FM, SW (Shortwave) and Longwave receiver with some unusual features not commonly found on other radios. The DX tests will come after this introduction

    My home radio market! Glad to finally see a video from the US with this device.

    Very helpful video, I now understand my slightly different model of TEF6686 radio controls much better now

    Nice video !! Can you please share witch antenna was used for MW/SW testing ? Thank you in advance

    I noted that NXP and distributors that carry this IC have short promotional documents available for it, but they do not publicly share a datasheet with enough detail to allow someone to use the IC to build a radio. Is the datasheet available only to people who sign a non-disclosure agreement and who intend to use the IC in a mass-produced design?

    Which other radios utilize this chip and do any of them do the Ham bands and SSB? You did a great job on this video revie

      The chip was designed for automotive use and can be found in Pioneer and other radios. However automotive radio designs don't take advantage of the chip capabilities, they have different design targets.

    Mine is slightly different. Software version 2.00, TEF 6686 Lithio, Patch: v102. A long press on the middle button (MODE) allows you to change a lot of parameters including the AM step, to 10kHz for USA or 9kHz for Europe.

    Hard to tell but sounds like it still has soft muting?

      Yes, I have used it with an MLA-30 and a W6LVP loops for medium/short wave. it works well.

    Haha, Atlantic 252 Khz, transmitter is in Ireland and still works, though at a fraction of original power.

    Nice demo. Thanks. Where did you purchase the radio?

      Also, what antenna are you using? Is that aftermarket?

    I also bought one. But see that the medium wave band runs up to 1620Khz. Can this be adjusted to 1710Khz. And also preferably with steps of 1Khz. I would like to listen to the pirate channels.
    and they are between 1602 khz and 1710 khz

      I understand you can add those frequencies if you downgrade software back to version 1.15 I need it too because we use those frequencies in the US.

    Yes, those buttons need to be silenced! Is this continuously variable bandwidths?

    • @icholakov
      @icholakov  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The buttons sound louder on the video than they really are. In real life they click but they are ok, not annoying.

    How the hell did you test that radio with constant noise in the background? Is it worth checking, among other things, also audio response with that noisy environment? I don't really get the point.

    • @icholakov
      @icholakov  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is not reception test. I only used a small telescopic antenna. reception tests with real antennas will come next when I have time.

    This bandwidth switch is absolutely useless, I threw out the IF filter completely (there were only RF filters with a bandwidth of megahertz) and this had absolutely no effect on the signal / noise, at least at long-range reception. It is possible that a narrow bandwidth will work better with short-range reception with a lot of industry noise.
