      The "synchros" wouldn't let you downshift that extreme. You'g hear and feel a bunch of grinding and never get into gear. Anyone that has driven a manual transmission in a performance car should know that. There is a whole bunch more to this story that we don't know about.

    I drive a Toyota mpv, two months ago I complained about having difficulty to get into reverse gear, then the Toyota dealer representative asked the mechanic to check it. Result was suggesting to change the clutch.
    Days after that the representative called me to confirm and managed to made schedule for the repair. After sometimes when it was too hot, the car had hiccups like on the acceleration when the gas pedal pushed to accelerate.
    Then returned to be fixed and it was done. But when near the regular service time, it happened again the hiccups like acceleration.
    Then regular service time came and I lodge the complain, so the representative in Toyota dealer told me that some engine's part needed to be replaced with the new ones which were the spark plugs.
    But after somedays when the car became too hot it got that hiccups like acceleration symptoms again. What the heck is wrong with original Toyota dealer repairing their own original product 🧐

      It depends on if you are looking for the most expensive shop in the country!
      I saw a video from Finland. The videoblogger visited a shop where they repair EV batteries, and the owner said that the older Tesla batteries are easier to fix, so normally it costs about 1,000 euro.
      A faulty battery, means normally that one or more cells are faulty, and in most cases they change a module. In a used battery they have to mount an equal used not faulty module.
      It's not possible to mix new and used modules, or cells!
      A second hand Tesla m3 battery costs about 4,000-4,500 euro, but it's more complicated to change modules in the newer Tesla batteries, which means the working hours rise, and they are quite expensive in most European countries.

      @@amg3078 You don’t understand cars if you are say that. Shifting into a lower gear at high rpm, will mechanically make the engine rev beyond its maximum threshold. This being said a normal rev limiter either cuts fuel or air so it cannot rev any higher. If it is mechanically being revved to a high rpm there is nothing anyone can do about it. The only option would be to put a lock out on the gears but that would make driving a manual shit.

    Modern cars today are manufactured with the body dropping on to the chassis and motor assembly. When you go to a shop and they must replace the engine, they cannot simply reverse the manufacturing steps. It takes a lot of time to remove the engine and then work on it with even more specialized parts which may not be readily available in the country. One advantage of EVs is that they have far fewer parts in the drivetrain, and many of them are designed with common parts. For sure casting large pieces means that the body damage will be more difficult, but with robotic assembly, it is perhaps easier and better to just replace the car and then use the old one for repair parts.

    basically this $42k bill is to replace the engine. there is no way the 3 cylinder 1.6 turbo costs that much to make, this is just profiteering. id be surprised if the genuine cost of the motor with an honest margin tacked onto it was above $5k. fossil companies make their money this way, the "genuine" parts are offered at a comical markup. this is also true for motorcycles.
    having said that, this car is cool. it's much different than any EV on sale today thus has no real competition in that sense, it weighs only 1300kg. the glaring weakness is the manual transmission, that makes it slower than it should be against for example a Golf R. but it's a quick and very agile car otherwise. overpriced though, but that's just the "enthusiast" car market for you.

  • @JonNewell

    Sounds like they’re wanting to replace parts that weren’t damaged. He should just go to an independent repairer. maybe he can find a wrecked car, one that’s been rear ended and get the engine out of that. I would have thought a modern car like the GR Yaris would not let you select the wrong gear. It’s easy enough to do in an older car.

      The owner was abusing vehicle drag racing. Wide open throttle shifting with no delay in clutch engagement. This technique can be very advantageous, doubly so in a turbo car because it allows you to not lose boost between shifts. But if you downshift instead of upshift, or mess up the timing, you will exceed rpm limitations before you can disengage clutch.

    • @thabzmad7265
      @thabzmad7265 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's common actually for manual (stick) shifting, especially if one attempts or is racing. If it's not something they are used to. Even seasoned Formula1 or rally drivers used to make a gearshift error (despite h-shift type gates) which would at times spin the car. However in most cases, the drivetrain or tyres can take it and the engine management protects from the resulting over-revving. Other times it's gearbox loss and like for the GR- Corolla person in discussion, it's a worst case engine totalled.

    Most Reported Problems in Tesla Drive Units
    Noises: Several Tesla Model S owners have reported the infamous milling and grinding noises. These sounds become more noticeable if the car is driven at low speeds. Some users have also reported a ‘clucking’ sound from the rear.
    Bad Sealings: The drive unit can damage its sophisticated components if water makes an ingress. Bad sealings are usually the culprit, but that only applies to older versions of Tesla. Like in the case of noises, this issue is also primarily associated with the Model S.
    Vibrations: Some loose wires can transmit vibrations into the drive unit as the car moves. The vibrations ultimately transmit to the car body.

    I don't know a lot about mechanics but I would think that there would be a governor on the engine to limit the RPM and some sort of interlock to prevent shifting in a way that would destroy the transmission.

    • @neilfromclearwaterfl81
      @neilfromclearwaterfl81 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      A rev limiter only prevents damage from pressing the accelerator pedal too far however if you force it from 4th gear to 1st gear instead of 3rd gear and let off the clutch for engine braking then you are either going to break the driveline or over speed the engine. On most transmissions if your traveling at highway speeds though you are really going to have to force the shifter to get it into 1st gear so a seasoned driver would automatically know just by that clue that he missed the gate for 3rd gear. You flat palm the shift from 4th to 3rd to help prevent this on most manual shifts.
      This sounds like an inexperienced person driving a manual shift car like he stole it voiding the warranty.
      Toyota though did jack up the price selling individual components rather than a long block with a turbo already on it.
      At this point since it was obviously due to driver negligence he has to chose if he wants to take Toyota's offer of a $42,000 repair that they are going to eat $32,000 of getting him out the door for around $10,000 which makes it sound like they are willing to do the job for what the parts and labor actually costs them.
      Best!

    • @richardnwilson
      @richardnwilson 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I was thinking more in terms of a computer controlled electronic (as opposed to Mechanical) interlock that would take into account the speed, the gears, and the engine RPM to prevent damage from experienced drivers.

    • @neilfromclearwaterfl81
      @neilfromclearwaterfl81 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@richardnwilson You mean a new, more costly to own and more costly to maintain type of manual transmission? That is usually handled by ordering a paddle shifted automatic transmission and not a full manual and is not available on the GR Corolla.
      The GR Corolla is a limited production Street and Track car that has a somewhat unique to it 3 cylinder 300 hp turbo charged engine and all wheel drive system only similar to the GR Yaris. It is designed for enthusiasts and circuit racing to compete with such as the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf Type R.
      Experienced drivers would be very unlikely to miss a shift from 4th to 3rd gear to end up forcing it into first. Even on my 2004 GM its almost impossible in normal street driving during the commute to work at the posted speed limits to redline and totally destroy an engine by missing a shift. This one melted a piston and had done such an extreme amount of damage due to the way he was horsing around and basically pedal to the metal hooliganing on a public street. He has a bigger problem and should count his blessings that he didn't get caught and lose his license.
      Best!

    Ultimately the issue is a design fault by Toyota.
    My MY2O13 Subaru has a warning if downshifting into a gear that will over rev the engine for the road speed. Whilst clutch still depressed you just select a higher gear, warning stops & you can let up the clutch. So the tech exists.
    That Toyota didn’t incorporate a warning system like this or a physical lockout on a scenario that would cause catastrophic damage is poor engineering design & on them.

    Click bate again Sam this story is totally drivers error and he miss shifted to 3rd instead of 5th so he was driving it hard as this indicates to me a GR corolla owner that he was travelling in excess of 130km/h not exactly cruising speeds, and I get it the gear box is crisp and has pretty short throughs but if this guy knew how to drive the thing he would have clutched in before any damage was done and another thing you failed to mention about the story is a lot of the cost is labour, you know the engine isn't that expensive when performance shops buy complete short blocks to modify for $6500. Also note I've had my GR corolla for about 9 months now with over 11000km great car only thing I'd put it down for would be tyre noise but it's still smother to drive then the Hilux it replaced and the wifes 2012 WRX practical and fun in one package

  • @teinspringz

    Head gasket blowing 2 times in one ownership would be a sign to not repair it again, cannot believe you let it go 4 times before replacing the engine. That's madness Sam. Money shifting a brand new car is stupidity and not something I'd expect any car manufacturer would cover under warranty. Stupid people buy performance cars all the time, nothing new. Go Toyota!! Put that guy in his place!!
    Yes EV's can be faster these days but damn changing tyres twice a year driving a heavier than needed car, the charging network is still abysmal compared to the fossil fuel network, for peace of mind motoring fossil fuel still rules. Waiting for a charge at a DC charger is also something most people are not accustomed to, it is inconvenient and waste of time. Swappable batteries should have been a staple for EV's but that's a missed opportunity now that will be most difficult to retrofit in production. When I bought my colt in 2009 I planned to keep it till it dies, and so far 15 years later it is still surviving and frugally drinking fossil fuel. Would I expect the same range from a fixed battery EV in 15 years time, or would I have to spend $$$$$ replacing the battery twice? There is not much logic in having all the controls on a touchscreen that can fail and render the whole system into limp mode. But sure, once I see an EV I like the design of and can see longevity in the purchase I will buy one. But for now, I would rather get the GR Corolla.

    Toyota is way behind Honda but they are in second place.
    After owning a Toyota truck I switched to American trucks.... Because they could be repaired. With parts you could find at the auto store.... Inexpensively. The Toyota was great and still things started breaking..... And it wasn't all that long either....
    I had head gasket go on a Toyota as well, due to a staple they used in the construction of the head gasket that eventually rusted out. . ....
    But the biggest problem with Toyotas is you can't use anything but OEM parts..... Nothing else will actually work.....

    Combustions engines are inherently complicated, full of moving parts. After decades of R&D and billions of dollars they are reasonably reliable now, although like this car, they can snap when pushed hard. However compared to the efficiency and reliability of brushless electric motors they are not even in the same league. When I think of all the money I have poured into fixing and maintaining shit combustion engines over the last 30 years, I won't miss them at all. And before someone mentions batteries being the weakness in EV's, do your research, Chinese LFP batteries will now outlast the car, they are getting a million km's in Chinese taxis.
