They didn't get the rights to the books. They bought the rights to the hobbit and lord of the rings books, and the appendix of the 1st and 2nd age. They cannot use alot, and I mean alot of the silmirilion. Basically they bought the rights to the wrong stuff.. then tried to make it work anyway.
Edit: that's not me defending them in any way. This show breaks my heart. Waited my whole life to see the first or second age on film and the butchered it beyond recognition. I hope the writers and showrunners never get another media job after this for the rest of thier lives. These 2 morons should be allowed to run a car wash let alone a billion dollar show.

Or let them spend 90% of their childhood & adolescence behind screens?! They’re completely unequipped to take on the real world, have a career, and raise a family. This read like someone is describing a traumatic experience … but is applied to a TV show??
As for looking back at a car accident … that’s u having it made. I was a level 1 trauma patient after my near-fatal car accident. Left side shattered, all limbs broken, some JOINTS shattered, insides carved up by sharp edges of broken ribs, scalped. Looking at a car accident lololol… try 8 days in trauma ICU on a ventilator & in medically induced coma, 1.5 months on trauma floor w/ weekly reconstructive surgeries, 1.5 months in a freaking nursing home for “after care”, then going home w/ a PICC line & Visiting Nurse Services. Was a 3rd yr medical student before…left, got >$350,000 in student loans forgiven…
Yeah, looking at a car accident is nothing dude.
When one dislikes a show, it should just be turned off and their experience seeing it should just roll right off their shoulder & be forgotten. It’s pixels on a flat screen for crying out loud.

The elves in the show lack wisdom, perception, intelligence, and foresight.
It seems the show is more concerned with making sure they have a diverse cast rather than having a good story.
I don’t completely hate the show, but it falls well short of Peter Jackson’s interpretation. I don’t think it’s due to the acting. The show is poorly written. It seems to be more of a problem with the director’s vision and love of the original material.
I love that the cast is diverse and many different people are getting a chance on screen. I don’t care who the actors are as long as the characters are interesting, believable, and the story is well written. But the story is not, the characters are not.

I don’t get how time passes in this series. Everybody just seems to fast travel from one place to another with no great length of time passing.
When Celebrimbor looked at the vice I was like yeah clamp the chain in there but nope. Even if it didn’t work but he didn’t even attempt it.
For better or worse the Orcs were probably the best part to the point where at parts, especially with the music, it was like watching the Orcs from the Peter Jackson movies

The siege was the most stupid thing I have ever watched in a fantasy show, no joke.
To be fair, Celebrimbor had some really amazing scenes and the actors did a great job, but you can tell none of the showrunners were ever near a real battle, or a real siege engine, or near a real wall, or near a real river...

I think what sums up the series for me is the excitement about how the things they did alright and the thinks I despise at the same time was that they namedropped Melian "of the Valar".
The name dropping of Melian excited me (background information!) while in the same sentence they could have called her what she is, a Maiar, just like Sauron, and the Istari. It was so wrong.

The battle was so outrageously disappointing. Such little showtime for actual fighting, most of the episode still consisted of scenes of two characters talking to each other and the battle of itself was so small scale and didn’t feel dangerous. The battle of Helms Deep and Minas Tirith both showed huge orc armies marching in formations, building tension showing orcs climbing ladders/siege towers and felt dangerous, this episode had none of this, it just felt like pickpockets of fighting in a field. We go to a battle scene and the orcs are just magically on the walls instead of showing the process and pushing forward ladders

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel that Tolkien wrote or said somewhere that the whole point of the elves, and the reason they have some envy of men isn't just that they can die (which is weird on Tolkien's part, but whatever), it's that the story of middle earth fundamentally isn't about them, literally. The world is ultimately built for men, and they are mere facilitators of this. They are near perfect, so having a compelling drama centred on them as THE main characters is doomed for failure, because they don't have the flaws that make compelling protagonists. They have enough for ancillary characters, and in book form they can be compelling in a literary, poetic way, but not in a way that suits television.

On face value this Season has been SOOO much better than Season One was, for a casual viewer I am sure it is very entertaining, but for those of us that have delved into the lore of Tolkiens world, the plot holes are still claringly obvious and unfortunatetly are a massive let down. Sure some things can be put down to it being an adaptation and being limited to the Lord of the Rings books only. However, Galadriel being this lost in love character in Season One with Halbrand and now kissing Elrond is just nuts! The dwarvern rings being known by the dwarves to be corrupted them to greed is odd, as why would they then pass them down for generations until they are lost to the dragons or recovered by Sauron...

Ok. Had some time to think...and actually now think it's even worse. lol
Biggest issue hands-down from the beginning: The Halbrand mystery storyline. It did NOTHING to elevate Sauron's character or make him appear more vicious or cunning. It made him look weak in fact. They should have simply started out with One Season of incredible character building and setups...forging the rings, deception, intrigue, etc. It's all in the source material already. It would have been perfect that way!
They even could have kept the whole Harfoot storyline. Chuck in the Blue Wizard, who helps to fight the evil rising in the East, amends for what the other blue wizard did wrong (being corrupted and all). He ends up helping the Harfoots/Stoors. Somewhere in Season 4 they find the Shire etc. Fine!
They had the first episode to really setup the whole history of Valinor (which they tried) and they could have introduced Galadriel and Celeborn and shown this elves to be the incredible characters that they ought to be!
Instead it does feel like we're watching a Tolkien soap opera!!! Shoddy character development (mostly) and I am so angry for all those wonderful actors, who could have been given truly memorable roles to play. Instead, they've been reduced to this utterly bamboozling, befuddled mess of a show.
You want to know where the money went for this? Not the writing, not the CGI, not the actors, etc. It's gone toward destroying what could have been another powerful legacy of Tolkien's work. Such disrespect for somebody's work should NEVER be rewarded. And sadly, there are far too many people these days who enjoy this mild, mind-numbing, dumbed-down type of entertainment...

  • @iampetewyse

OKAY... so I've had a think about how they could save this show. Because, at this point, it is not just "a bad show", it's actively damaging Tolkien's legacy. I have spoken to people who "don't want to read" the stories because they're boring. Now the whole "it was a dream" thing would piss a lot of people off, buuuuuuuut how about they do a sudden 180 and have a young scholar in Minas Tirith writing all this shit down, and an older scholar comes in with some of his pages FURIOUS. "What is this?! This is not how it happened?!" "Well I thought I'd spice it up a bit" "Spice it up?! It's our history you imbecile!!! Get out, you are never to touch a quill again." Then we do a QUICK recap of what has happened, lore accurate, same actors and everything but with the right time line. And rejoin the story with handing out the 9. Moving forward with a lore accurate show.

If he was, could Sauron have actually used Celebrimbor as a puppet since he’s already inside his mind. The hand gesture being more of a visual cue for the audience. Then we see him do a similar thing with the elven soldiers that try to arrest him: he gets into their minds and forces them to stab one another, he doesn’t actually control them physically. Annatar is the only good thing about this show now. Elrond, Galadriel, durin, narvi, Gil galad, all wasted strong characters. How did Galadriel slip out of the orc camp in the worst disguise ever? WTF was that kissing scene, it’s so gross, I get you needed a distraction but 🤮🤢, then theres Rian the Boromir wanna be, the wacky conversation and then where Is Gil galad in all this? I’m so beside myself rn

When Gil galad finally shows up, he’s all cool with his spear but what’s firming ranks with 12 soldiers? Poor Arondir, too cool for his own good too. And Elrond , just WTF? This whole episode is a WTF.

I also think that if you have not read the books nor seen the Peter Jackson adaptations, it might be more enjoyable. For people in that situation do not have any expectations or preexisting knowledge of how it should have been.
You can tell from the quality of settings, graphics, and costumes, that the show has a high production value. You can see that the producers have spent lots of money on the project.
And there are many cool things about the show like how they depict Númenor and
Khazad-dûm. And even the build up to the eruption of Mt. Doom to create Mordor was cool.
But the characters have been underwhelming, particularly the elves. Arondir is the only Elf who seems to have qualities one would expect for an elf. The rest of the Elves are similar to men in their flaws, ambitions, foresight, wisdom, and humility. They are shown to be wise in one scene and then are making a critical blunder in the next.
Season 1 the Harfoot experience was slow, but at least I could understand this as to establish the reason for Gandalf’s love of the hobbits.
I didn’t hate the Dwarves, or the scenes with the Númenoreans, it is really just the huge disappointment with the portrayal of the elves. Gil-galad, Elrond, Galadriel, Celebrimbor, and Cirdan are supposed to be near perfect beings for what is good, noble, pure, and beautiful. And they seem to have more qualities of men than they do of elves.
It is sad seeing the resources that are going to the show result in a product so dissimilar from the source material.
However it must be noted that there was always going to have to be some amount of artistic license. There were too many gaps and holes in the lore to make a cohesive show. However it could have been filled in a way to make it still feel true to the source.
It has been filled but doesn’t feel true to the source. It doesn’t feel Tolkien outside of the names of places and characters. So if you don’t know who JRR Tolkien is before watching the show, maybe then it can be a decent compelling show.
But it really must be approached as a spin-off or an entire retelling of the story by a new author, unrelated to previous works entirely.
It’s sad when you think about the money and resources they had and what could have been…that is what makes me the most sad. What could have been…
And again nothing against the actors. I think they are doing a good job. It’s the director and writers that have missed the mark.

I gave up after E3 of this new season. I was willing to see what the show did after the mess of S1 and if they would do better.
Nope, they doubled down on just making up theor own crap and I just coild not keep going.
I still am watching your recaps though to hear the increasing frustration

It’s almost impressive how they manage to make the show worse with every episode, like someone baking cookies and consistently forgetting the sugar… then doubling down on the vinegar.
