That little node you put a stone cutter near looks like it may be an iron node. ☺
I suspect the palisade doesn’t do anything unless it forms a nearly enclosed area. To get the light fortification bonus, you might need to wrap the walls all the way around an area rather than have them end at the river. I could be wrong though, I’m not sure.
Watchtowers will eventually be needed, though personally I don’t like how they work. Rather than function normally and watch for external threats (which don’t really exist in the game) the towers have to point towards your residence areas to watch for internal threats (which don’t exist either). Regardless, their current message/implication is a bit dystopian. Though ultimately I think the constraint with the nicer houses is a lack of beautification.
I mean... our real life has police. We may not have tall watch towers, but we have police patrolling the streets, some neighborhoods have neighborhood watches. Everything in the world is a bit "dystopian". If it weren't, what's the challenge?
To the gameplay aspect - other videos I've seen only show fortification counting with a palisade/wall/fence if it goes all the way around and connects (that means lining the river, which kind of defeats the purpose of having water-front-property).
