Encounter With An Unexpected Visitor While Exploring the Abandoned Cooley High School In Detroit

  • Everyone knows that abandoned high schools are among my favorite to explore. Thomas M. Cooley High School in Detroit, Michigan did not disappoint. The school has such a rich history and some of the parts I was able to explore included the basketball gym, pool area (including the locker rooms), classrooms, and above all the burned-up auditorium. It was truly a sight to see. And I had a run-in with an unexpected visitor. I think you'll love it.

In the 1920s, Detroit’s public school system was growing at an unprecedented rate. While downtown had a long history of higher education, starting with Cass Technical High School, options in the suburban parts of the city were more limited. On the northwest side of the city, Burns Elementary School served as a partial high school, with 350 students enrolled in 9th and 10th-grade studies in 1926. To relieve overcrowding, and to provide 11th and 12th grades locally, the board of education began planning for a three-story high school at the corner of Fenkell and Hubbell Avenues.
Even as the school was under construction in 1927, the district realized that enrollment would far outstrip the designed capacity of 1,500 students, and additional units were planned. The first unit of Thomas M. Cooley High School was completed and opened in September of 1928 a cost of $753,270.
By the 1980s though, Detroit Public Schools was in the midst of a downward trend that would eventually lead to the state taking over on two different occasions. Cooley was one of the largest high schools in the State of Michigan, with over 3,400 students in 1983. In 1989, that number had fallen to 2,500, and by 1997 it was 1,400. The closure of nearby Redford High School in 2007, which sent some students to Cooley briefly slowed declining enrollment, but by 2010 it was expected that enrollment would drop below 1,000 students.
Though the school was losing students, the district was investing money into the increasingly empty building. The auditorium was renovated in 2004, the towers restored in 2006, and the roof was replaced as part of $12.8 million dollars in improvements. A health clinic was added, and the vocational wing was converted into a special needs school.
In 2010, DPS announced that it would be closing 42 schools due to low enrollment and high maintenance costs. Cooley High School was on the list. Despite renovations just a few years prior, the 83-year old school had significant maintenance problems. Enrollment was barely 1,000 students in a building designed for 3,400. Over the protests of students and alumni, who offered to revamp the school, Cooley was closed in June of 2010.
Over the winter of 2016 and the summer of 2017, the building declined significantly. Vandalism became a serious problem, with graffiti appearing on the walls inside and out. Scrappers began to gut the classrooms. Despite the setbacks, the Cooley Reuse Project continues to push forward, raising money through crowdfunding and finally securing a purchase agreement. But in August of 2017, school officials told Pitts that the school was no longer for sale, and would be redeveloped by the district instead. The building was now fully open to trespass and was being scrapped on a daily basis.
On the morning of September 29th, 2017, the Detroit Fire Department was called to Cooley High for a reported fire. Arriving companies found the auditorium fully engulfed in flames, and quickly called for a second and then a third alarm. After several hours they brought the blaze under control, but the damage had been done: much of the auditorium had been destroyed by the fire, which had burned all of the seats down to their metal frames. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to other parts of the building, limiting it to just the auditorium. Chilling photos posted on social media showed row after row of chairs going up in flames.

One of my worst fears during an explore happened... running into someone while in an abandoned building. What would you do if you ran into someone you didn't expect to be there when you're not supposed to be there either? Do you think I handled it correctly? Let me know your thoughts and get at me on social media also! Thanks friends.

I am not amazed at the sheer size of the school but the amazing programs it once had; schools simply do not invest in extracurricular and vocational programs like they use to which is no wonder why students are bored to death now. This is another major reason why schools are failing, the focus is only academic achievement and test preparation; not career and life preparation.

As for this school - the people destroyed this beautiful school. Mr. Daniels opened the video stating the many millions of dollars that were invested in the school before it closed. He also mentioned the dwindling attendance of the school. I believe attendance is what is used to allocate spending for schools. This was a nicer than any school I ever attended.

Vocational Schools were ment for a society of student who couldn't attend college, and with four years of preperation, a student was well prepared to work in a working class world. The Vocational schools taught, Dress making, Cosmetology, Restaurant skills, Secretarial, and mostly anything that would put you over the top and help you succeed in life. Those programs were a GOD send to the working class. The crime rate shows the result of only teaching liberal art skills in working class environments, BIG mistake.

Great video, Anton. I remember these places from a long time ago. My mother graduated from Cooley in 1936. I spent a good portion of my younger years living a few blocks from there. I used to swim in the Cooley High School pool in the mid 50s. It was state of the art in every way.. It was built in a way that allowed boys swimming and girls swimming at the same time or open swimming as in male and female together. There were dividing walls that came up from the bottom and down from above...hydraulically, I presume... that allowed the creation of two separate pools in two separate spaces. For competitive swimming or open swimming, the walls were lowered allowing use of the full pool. We also used to play baseball on the diamond nearest the school. In the fall, we'd hop over the short fence and play football on the practice field on the northeast corner of Chalfonte and Coyle. I went to Robert Burns Elementary School on the corner of Terry and Lyndon. We moved before high school came along so I didn't attend Cooley. But Cooley high School was a work of art in terms of architecture, design and in every other way. In the post WWII years, Detroit was an incredibly cosmopolitan city. It's fate is an American tragedy.

Out of all, I agree with you on disagreeing with disrespectful people who destroy our landmarks. That’s our history, and even though we’re at the weakest point since the pre 1900’s, those our are landmarks that cannot be rebuilt in the same manner and obviously cannot be preserved, as the government won’t do it. Stay safe man!

I've never understood how some can get satisfaction in punching holes in walls, shattering windows, sinks & toilets, setting fires....I sorta get tagging, I sorta get stripping electric boxes & plumbing, but pure destruction for no reason other than to simply destroy....that I don't get and never will.
This was a wonderful video, and I gotta admit I held my breath a few times lol. I'd need a LOT more lights. Great job.
I'm not a Detroiter, nor a Michigander, but cities all across the country are losing their schools. My mother graduated from this high school in 1964. At the time, the student body was over 90% Caucasian due to segregational districting. Upon graduating, she moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas (her other alma mater in addition to Cooley High School 🤘🏻) . I asked her why she made such a significant relocation and she said she had been in Detroit for most of her life and wanted to live someplace else for a while with a warmer climate. She has been in Texas ever since but has nostalgia for Detroit from the 1950’s and early 60’s. She says it was a great city at the time. I am not going to show this video to her because it will make her sad. She went up to Detroit for her class’s 50th reunion and it was bittersweet. The school had already closed but she saw many old friends, some of whom she hadn’t seen in decades. Thanks for uploading this.

Wowww such a shame how in disrepair this place has gone. Me and a friend came to explore back in 2012 and it still looked really nice, even the power was still on which shocked me with it being abandoned. That auditorium was the most memorable and we went up to the top of that stage where the stage lights would be. Also I don't think you got to it but there was this huge library on the first floor that still had books on the shelves. Unfortunately that was the last area we got to see cos police had come in and arrested us thinking we were scrappers. We spent like an hour in jail before they let us go. Apparently there were still working cameras on the outside that caught us going in and alerting police. Still the best explore I've ever done. But I'm glad you showed most of the place and I'm getting to see the areas we didn't get to like the gym and pool. What a shame though cos I remember thinking back then how they must have had plans to make it into something else. That auditorium alone could've been used as a community theater had it not been burned up. Love your videos man especially as a fellow Detroiter.

I remember playing my first high school basketball game in that gym.🤦🏾‍♂️ The nervousness watching the game seeing all the fans on that track over the court. The cheerleaders saying C-oo-ley u know The rest if you attended that school. Also the most intimidating thing is the fact that they had a mascot i was like 🤭 I thought every high school we played would have one but not so. They were just a different breed of school and I do want to note that I am born and raise from the east side. I remember always riding past that area seeing the school and it’s magnificent beauty, my family also attended This school. If I could’ve picked any other school to a chain or play for it definitely would have been cool the first Redford second Central Cody and the last is a tossed up between Henry Ford or Milford I just always like the architects an structural look to the schools. I Attended Denby before but they also can be in that category

I must say I cried looking at what that school use to look like and what it has become now. Sad that we let schools just go down like that.
