    This is exactly what I plan on joining for, I did a semester of college and dropped out because I wasn’t really ready for it straight out of high school. I just turned 20, I’ve been working at Walmart for almost 2 years now, just been smoking weed and hanging out. I’m getting tired of not doing anything... it’s honestly making me depressed. I stopped smoking on my birthday and when I’m clean I’m going to the recruiter and signing up. The plan is to mature in the navy and let them pay for school. Wish me luck!

    I didn't have a plan or expectation of life before joining the Navy. And... from personal experience you wil still succeed! Take what this young man is saying with a grain of salt. There is nothing wrong neither, with not having a plan after your first contract so you settle for a re-enlistment. In fact its the best decision I made in life. I went on shore duty on my 2nd contract. No deployments, chilled the whole time, and picked up a BS in investigative forensics. After 8 years I got out as an E6 with established wealth, if you dont have a plan, its ok. Trust me when I say this the Navy will show you the world literally and figuratively.
    The only statement I agree with is that there are higher ups that "belittle" your future aspirations. Unfortunately, there are incompetent higher ups that cannot persuade sailors to re-enlist so they resort to "homeless veteran" tactics. The truth is though, it is their duty to retain sailors to fulfill the Navy's manpower quota, understand that. Leaving this here as another opinion you can take into consideration.

    • @Jesuspaid4oursins
      @Jesuspaid4oursins 4 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Hey man, that's a good reason to join, but I just want you to know that it's completely up to you. Bootcamp will definitely make you a more disciplined person, but it's up to you to maintain all of that when you go to A-School, and ultimately, the fleet. I've seen a lot of my shipmates slip back into their old behaviors, old addictions, and civilianized themselves after Bootcamp.
      My tip, if you're joining the military to change your life when you get out of Bootcamp, avoid the bad habits, avoid making friends with people who remind you, or are like your past self, and work out. See the towns, and live out of your barracks room. The military is not what you think it is. Bootcamp will give you the tools to be a better person and live more efficiently, but it's up to you to sharpen those tools and put them to use.

    I just came across this video because I've been watching Navy videos lately reminiscing and asking myself what could've been if I stayed and did my 20. Did 8 years and took the risk not knowing whats going to happen with my life without the Navy. This video just reminded me that I made the right decision and I'm in a better place in life. I took advantage of what the Navy thought me within those 8 years I served and went back to school to do what I really love which is physical therapy. Everything you said in this video hits deep bro especially when you said don't trade money for time. Thats something I've been going by for the longest and it makes life much easier and enjoyable. Keep doing your thing bro. You earned my subs right away after seeing this video. Goodluck and God bless!

    I understand everything this young man is saying, but it's what he's not saying that's misleading. I did a 20 year career in the Navy and no it is not for everyone. I encourage all young people who don't have a trade or don't have the means to attend college to join even if it's only for 4 years, but to do it with the intention of doing a job that benefits you when you get out. This young man throughout the entire video has talked about how he has all of these outside things going on but didn't mention not one or what he's doing to prepare himself for his return to civilian lifestyle. Example: when he makes his transition is he going to walk directly into his next phase immediately, I hope he does but reality is if he hasn't put in the work before the transition he'll have to go to the backup plan that he doesn't have in place. He hasn't mentioned any resources other than books that he's read who are the people that he's talked to in the field that he wants to work in when he gets out. The Navy has changed a lot since I retired but I always had good people around me to guide me and tell me the truth and not always agree with me. Here's what I reccomend that you do find a mentor inside the Navy and one outside that can mentor you in that field that you want to work in and don't say you don't need anyone to show you the ropes because we all do they've been there and done that. Plus they can tell you all the mistakes they made so that you won't have to. I did 20 years and I enjoyed my career. I retired at 38 paid off my house using my Navy pension now that money is pocketed on a savings account. Now I've been working for a fortune 500 company for 20 years soon to retire and collect another pension. So my advice to you young man is to calm down nobody wants to hear you sound so angry and provide videos that can actually provide some guidance as you gain knowledge. Allow someone to give you some guidance.

    • @kwamybujubanton7524
      @kwamybujubanton7524 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @mgbracey I agree with what @officialShim is saying although he did not mention his other sources of income. However, he did mention 6 streams of income but did not list them in detail. I agree with you that young people should join the military if they dont have a trade or a plan to attend college. I agree with you that a mentor is necessary to help guide you. I dont agree with the point you made about shim being angry and not providing guidance to people that would like to join. I believe Shim is amped about finding his purpose and life goals outside the military since he does not see himself serving 20 years. I believe shim is saying if you enjoy the military that's wonderful but if not prepare for life outside the military and use the military as a stepping stone. Shim major point is join the military and be happy or if your not HAPPY transition to a civilian and stop TRADING TIME FOR (pension)(paycheck) MONEY ----create a plan-----and trade MONEY FOR MONEY (Mutiple streams of income). This is a new age and you dont have to settle for a job to determine your financial success.!! With all do respect sir thank you for your service.

I did 20 years retired at 38, been getting a pension now for 20 years, paid off my home and now I'm banking that pension and about to retire again from a fortune 500 company. This guy needs direction. I understand everything he's saying and I encourage kids that don't have the funds to attend college or just need to learn a trade to join the military to get that experience and use it on the outside. Here's what's so misleading about this video.
      1. He doesn't speak of anything he's accomplished in the Navy. So what makes you think if he isn't putting in the time in the Navy to excel he's gonna do it when he gets out?
      2. He didn't speak of anyone mentoring him in the Navy or when he gets out to show him the ropes he's got this all figured out.
      3. Experience is the best teacher books are great but experience is a heck of a teacher.
      4. No accountability and he's angry about being in the Navy. They'll let him out all he has to do is ask.
      As older men we gotta stop buying in and agreeing these young guys need someone to look them in the eye and tell them the truth and with this story I hope him all the best but his approach is wrong

If we have a job working 8 hours a day whether it be self employed or working a job my time is my money. The time that you put in makes you or breaks you. Put in no time you get your worth put in the time and you get paid. Keep following the advice of this guy and you'll be questioning youself and you'll have nobody to blame but yourself. Google him in a year and see where he's at. I want the guy to win but he needs some guidance in his life

    I just finished my first semester at college, it was okay but I have bigger dreams. While I was rethinking everything the Navy recruiter called me so I decided to go in and talk to him. I really like the Navy Program and what it has to offer since I didn’t have much structure or discipline growing up, but I’m still unsure what to do. I know it cant really hurt me going but how do i avoid getting trapped.

      I retired about 6 years ago and truly understand where you coming from. The Navy its not for everyone. The compensation package you will received has decreased in recent years. Retiree Tricare used to be free, now there is a fee to pay. Even most benefits like commissary and NEX , that used to be for retirees and active duty only, has been extended to Veterans. Retired pay has demished and not enough to live a normal lifestyle. Plus at 38 almost 40 its hard to find a job specially if you have any VA rated disabilities.
      If I was doing it again... I would have done my first term, got out, used my GI bill and got a job. Joined the reserve and collect my same retirement at 60 instead of 38 with less bs/time away from home. A would have been better off. So why retire active duty when I can get the same from retirement at the reserve. Just my 2 cents.

    Thank you for this video. You really made me emotional. I will change my mindset. I am weak minded. Comfort really has killed my growth these past 2 years, so I made the change to join the military -- something I always was interested in. Everything was going well for me, but I steered off path and didnt't stick to my original goal. My original goal was joining the military as a linguist, which I was a couple points away from scoring. I made the mistake of taking another job which I never even wanted. I backed out of the DEP and I felt regret. But after watching your video, I realize now that if I entered the military then I would easily be influenced to sign a reenlist contract in the future, because I am weak minded. I will study again - harder - so I can get my dream job in the military, which I have a passion for (or at least within the field I want). And when it is time to sign my contract, I will be strong minded and not easily influenced by others. For now, I must wait a bit to take that DLAB test again, but during this time of waiitng I won't waist time. THANKS
