Streptomyces: Bacteria that make antibiotics

Streptomyces bacteria are found almost everywhere on earth, and produce over two thirds of all clinically used antibiotic compounds.
We use antibiotics every day to fight disease and improve the growth of livestock - but why do Streptomyces produce them in the first place?
