Portable bandsaw stand // no weld build

  • DIY build of a portable bandsaw table with basic tools, No welding required !
    I designed and built a simple table stand for permanent mounting of
    a Harbor Freight "Bauer" portable band saw.
    Only basic woodworking tools are needed for this project.
    This is not a step by step tutorial, however I show all the key features, assembly methods and design elements you need to duplicate this build.
    Perhaps my favorite part of this build was my unique method to easily replace the blade by pivoting the table down and out of the way.
    Overall I am extremely happy with this builds outcome that I am considering keeping my wood prototype instead of fabricating a final version from steel.
    Let me know in the comments if you would like to see a steel version.
    This is also a budget friendly build project utilizing the Harbor Freight Bauer
    bandsaw with a cost of $130, and with perhaps $35 in plywood and miscellaneous hardware (not including the optional speed controller)
    here is an Amazon link to a similar "motor speed control" if you
    are interested.
    Thanks for watching :)

    Seriously, a very nice build. Despite it being from wood, it really appears extremely steady and rigid. I really admire the pivoting table top to access the blade fast. Well done.

    Absolutely the best, most stable design I have seen. Love the styling too. BTW, one of the reasons why the mounting locations for the saw are so well engineered is that this HF tool uses the exact same handle mounting strategy as the Milwaukee unit I have. Mine is older than Methuselah, so not sure if the new ones are built the same way. In any case, I've been looking for a good starting idea for a permanent solution to convert mine to fixed mount and your approach is a home run. Was going to build it with welded steel, but I really prefer to use wood. It will be lighter and easier to move it from bench to bench if I feel the need. Going to take your advice and use 3/4 Baltic birch. I just love working with it, although it is very pricey.
    Just one comment on safety - this from an EE and master electrician - having the plywood exposed in the back of the junction box is a fire hazard according to National Electrical Code - since wood is a combustible material, it is not allowed to have any of it exposed to the internals of line voltage j boxes. Even when installing a switch or receptacle box in a wall covered with wood paneling, the front surface of the box must be flush with the front of the paneling so that no wood is exposed to the internals where sparks or heat could be generated (such as from poor or faulty connections)
    Thanks so much for recording and posting. Keep up the great work.

      Thank you Paul, I am still very happy with my build and use this tool so much, I can’t even imagine how I did without it. The only thing I might upgrade is the aluminum surface on to maybe steel or stainless steel sheet.

    Most of the design is solid. The only thing I would modify is to add a mechanism to set the plane of the work surface perpendicular to the the blade. Not sure though, maybe that turnbuckle does that. The pivot is clever. If you change the design to metal and decide to use square tubing at that pivot, oversize the bolt holes and use round tubing with an ID suitable for the bolt as a crushtube to take the clamp load off the square tube walls. I'd probably change the design to a completely toolless pivot, and use something like a fluted knob available from Carr-Lane.

  • @David-hm9ic
    @David-hm9ic ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant design! It's easily the best I've seen after looking at a lot of bandsaw stands. A steel top will be much better than the aluminum. Sealing the plywood top and the saw cut in it with a thin laminating epoxy would allow for using cutting oil without damaging the wood. It should be allowed to cure overnight before adding the metal top so the top doesn't bond permanently to the wood. For occasional home shop use, plywood is a perfectly suitable material. For frequent use or if employees were using it an all metal stand would probably be more permanent.
    Things I would do differently would be to use tee nuts in the pivots to allow for one tool instead of two and to use additional tee nuts and bolts at the back of the pivoting piece to secure the table instead of the turnbuckle. The turnbuckle is distorting the top a little when it's tightened; enough that it can be seen in the video.

    • @BuildswithBrian
      @BuildswithBrian  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, and to address your criticisms I would say I agree with a steel top instead of aluminum as I mentioned in my video.
      Totally disagree with cutting oil, it is not a good idea with a bandsaw like this with rubber wheels, if you need lubrication use a wax stick.
      Sealing the top with epoxy is not necessary in my opinion .
      Tee-nuts would work but would not allow the use of nylock nuts on a part that needs to remain snug but yet still allowed to pivot.
      And I like my turnbuckle 👍

    I see ,but it seemed from the video which is great incidentally, that you had decided that before you had decided in the tilt. I use a lot of saws and like the slot in the front only because it often prevents small off cuts from getting jammed in the rear slot. This is why I wax interested in your reasoning. Sorry, I must’ve forgot to add the link for the speed control, but just simply Google “speed control for router” and they will pop right up, you can even get them off Amazon
      I can fully stand behind, taking the porta band apart, it’s the manufacturer that might have a problem with it, and will void your warranty 😆
      As far as plans go, honestly, you’re the first person that has asked for plans, I think, I will consider it, it’s really an easy build.
      The thing with plans is you would have to have the exact same model saw for the plans to actually be good. If harbor freight should change factories or something the holes may not line up right.
      Hope this helps, thanks for watching

    Regarding the wiring does it matter what red wire from the saw gores to the green and white wires from the plug?

      If you need to ask that I would recommend you have an electrician help you with it

    Nice. I'm looking to build one for my 20yo milw. saw.
    It weighs a f'n ton, and I don't really need it to be 'portable, tho I'd hate to mod the tool because, reasons.
    However, more and more I use it for things that need to be more precise and holding that beast cutting angle iron is a bitch as it will wander.

      To what purpose, works perfectly behind the blade, and it’s part of the function of my tilting table design

    It's a brushed motor that's why there is no circuitry. :)

    Building it with steel requires a whole different set of tools that a lot of people may not have. Press breaks, welders, plasma/oxy-accetylene, power shear ect... I think it would be better... but maybe not practical for most.

    • @BuildswithBrian
      @BuildswithBrian  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a somewhat different set of skills but absolutely doable, I could and would design it to require a minimum of metalworking tools and skills.
      That being said, wood is still easier 😁

      @@BuildswithBrian agreed. I was a welder/fabricator for 25 years. I am more comfortable with steel than wood, but woodworking is much more affordable and forgiving to a novice. And you don't have the fire concern to worry about in a small shed or garage.

      Yes sir I was a fabricator also, about 31 years,
      Also more comfortable with metal than wood 😆
