I’ve been fighting a thrips infestation for the past two months that I thought would be the death of me, but I think I’m almost past it. I took immediate action and fortunately haven’t lost a single one of my 150+ plants. If any thrips are reading this, know that your time has come.
To be honest I've been loving all the pest treatment talk as my collection has been hit too and I'm in a small space so it's all one room.. lots of work. I like to know what others are doing and how it's working for them. Pros and cons. I'm still not confident to diagnose what's wrong with my plants so seeing others collections that aren't perfect and them talking about why that plant isn't doing well is SUPER helpful. Thank you so much for your channel it's much appreciated ❤
I’ve got a mirror ball planter sitting on my kitchen table. The morning light hits it and sends spots of light all over the kitchen ceiling. Love it. 😍
Oh, dude, yes. “Curated,” to me, is whatever makes you the happiest! If that is a bunch of plants hanging out together- makes perfect sense to me 😃 I’m happiest amongst the plants. 🤗
Just a heads up...whnen you spray your plants with the tea tree oil and peppermint oil mix, let them dry completely before putting them back under grow lighjts. That will cause burn to your plants
Your frydek is stunning!! I wish mine would size up 😭 it was big at one time, I repotted it and it threw a fit, and now it won’t get big again. Alocasia drama is real 😂
i’ve been using 1/3 91% isopropyl alcohol mixed w 2/3 water on my plants for pests and even on my emerging anthurium leaves i haven’t noticed any damage at all
What a great tour!💖 Just a PSA... Wally Grow loop planters are on sale for 5.00. They do stand on a flat surface/ not just hanging. That house was meant for you,the windows are incredible, love the rainbows🤩😍.
Hey Fern, this is the recipe I use and it hasn’t burned any leaves; even anthurium emergents! Combine 4 cups Water 1/8 cup Dr. Woods Tea tree soap 1/8 cup Dr. Woods Peppermint soap 1/2 cup 70% Alcohol 1 1/2 tsp 3% Hydrogen peroxide Shake to combine as using. Spray the leaves to run off, top of soil, nursery pot, cover pot. Clean surfaces. Use monthly to clean leaves or weekly for an active outbreak (3 weeks minimum).
I used this DIY recipe (kind of) for a thrips and spider mite infestation. I only had lavender castile soap but added a few drops of tea tree and peppermint essential oils and its worked wonderfully!
I appreciate your constant updates on pests!!!! First time dealing with mealies and wait for your pest updates!! Thank you for helping me get through this!!
This is another reason why I never travel. Now that I have plants I would be worried sick about them at home while away. Best of luck I hope they stay strong for you!
I, too, am battling scale! The first time I have seen them in my collection. Where do they come from? Assuming they hitched a ride on new plant purchases. I squish them whenever we meet...!
hey fern! i think it makes sense to spray diatomaceous earth on the plants again befor you leave since you're worried about pests when you're gone, i know you just washed them off, but this treatment is a good option because it stays on the leaves for a long time. looking forward to you vlog prepping the plants for the trip!
About the macrame pot that fell - tea tree oil is really powerful stuff. I put some in a plastic container once and it literally melted the container into goop. If there’s something that might have eaten the glue, I wouldn’t put it past the tea tree. Isopropyl alcohol does dissolve super glue, so if it was superglued in, that was what did it. 😂 everything is looking so lovely on the whole. I’m always impressed with how you handle pests. After my own thrips mayhem the past spring, I understand how a little neglect can really cause a massive problem. So good on you. 🪴💚
Dear Fern, use ONLY the Castile Soap and water, and skip the alcohol and peroxide any time you do not see an ACTIVE infestation. Soap (especially horticultural soap, such as Safer, Garden Safe, Bonide Super Soap) is enough to control the most common types of chewing/sucking pests (mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, aphids, scale) on houseplants. You might need to repeat weekly for several weeks, but it's truly effective and very gentle on new growth and delicate variegation. Reserve the alcohol for when you can SEE mealies, spider mite webbing, aphids, and other buggies attacking your plants.
@@krishalifax2746 Do not wash it off. That's one of the reasons why it's best to use a properly formulated horticultural soap (Bonide Super Soap, Safer Insect Killing Soap, Garden Safe) or pure Castile Soap and water, never dishwashing soap. The soap has to remain on the leaves because it works by making contact with the pests, clinging to their exoskeleton, and smothering them slowly. Dawn and other "soaps" and not really soaps, they are detergents and could damage your plant with repeated use. Now, if it's convenient, you can spray the horticultural soap on and let the plant drip dry, then, a few days later, take the plant to the sink or shower and blast it with just water. This will do 2 things: dislodge any critters that might have hatched since last soap treatment, and remove excess soap that can sometimes give a hazy look to the leaves. In fact, I wash my plants BEFORE I spray them with soap, and once the pests are gone, at least once a month to remove dust and optimize photosynthesis...and just in case there's any type of "bug" lurking, waiting to take over.
Love your collection ❤❤ I can't wait to get my stands and plant wall set up. It's been a long time in the works but life just got in the way and I was never able to finish.
I use the same treatment and I have had some emerging leaves do the same. I use less soap than the recipe says and sometimes rinse any emerging leaves after a few minutes.
I have all the stuff to spray bugs, store bought and diy, but I've only sprayed 2x's. When I find bugs I separate and wash with dish soap and water, then spray with water in about 2 days and again if I see any. That's worked well for me. This summer I had an explosion of thrips on 1 newest leaf on an Anthurium, sprayed like that and they haven't come back. I was very surprised, bc there must have been 200 nymphs on the 1 newest leaf. I also decided to cut off 3 leaves with older damage, but had just a few thrips. I expected them to come back, but they haven't. Luckily I caught it in time, bc the 1 leaf looks really good.
I just went away for 3 days. The anxiety is real. Had a friend come to look after my cat, but I wasn't going to burden them with turning grow lights on and off. Everything is fine, aside from the usual suspects 😂🧡🌿
For spider mites and thrips I recently tried treating my plants with the Safer's "3 in 1" insecticide. I had done a few treatments with "End All" but only one treatment of the "3 in 1" did the job for many plants. It leaves kind of a greasy residu that seems to work well.
Do you think you can somehow mount the Thai grow light vertically on the wall next to the fridge?? That would look good and provide great light for her! Plus it could also help the Florida which is also looking beautiful! OMG and the Wally grow wall, I love the change into smaller plants!❤❤
Another comment from me. Having had houseplants for decades, I now won’t buy hangers that are attached to the pot that are made with rope, jute, etc. Every one eventually frays and falls away due to watering the pot and the rope soaking the water up. The plant lands on the floor! If I love the pot, I’ll buy it but will restring it with wire.
I didn't use this mixture but I observed the same mushy new growth on my peace lily and calathea for the first time this growing season so it could be something else. I have a preventive routine too but I only use neem oil once a month after their "dusting" shower.. Hope you will find your way out of this pest nightmare.. 🤞.. Enjoy your travel!!!
Alcohol dehydrates tissue. Which can really explain the crispy leaves. Also I’m not sure it can really amp up the results of diatomaceous earth. I’m wondering if that spray mixture can really work without the added alcohol. 🤔🤔 I’ll try making an experiment with it. I have a dieffenbachia with spider mites right now
hoya vitellinoide and globulosa are mine lastes obsession as well, look for mountain zoo, simmilat to globulosa but liveas are massive!😍 have a great holidays!
I’ve also been struggling with thrips. Like I think I eradicate them and then I find one little larvae creeping on a plant. Also found out that they love my aloe 😢. I was gonna ask if anyone else’s verricosum’ also become less velvety after pest spraying? I’ve decided to spray every two weeks with neem and safer’s end all to kill the last of the thrips. (Knock on Wood haven’t seen any other pests) Also decide to jump on the kelpy wagon just got my supply and super excited to see how my plants will do on a better food. I really enjoy all your planty videos fern and hope one day to meet in person! My Hoya obovata is so stiff and the vines are so think it would break if I put it in a trellis. I’ve got a bamboo shelf and one of the vines is stuck up through the top between the slats so they support it. Also it’s in a heavy ceramic pot so that’s heavier than the plant.
I use the same diy solution but without the hydrogen peroxide and half the amount of alcohol and havent encountered any damage not even when i spray new anthurium leaves
Hey Fern! So I’ve had the same damage on my plants before where the emergent leaf comes out and died off immediately but I had never used the DIY mix on those plants. I’ve always been told it’s either thrip damage or could be root issues…idk if this helps or not. Good luck tho, sometimes these plants really be testing us😅

I had aphids out on my balcony plants (sunflowers and some veggies (that aren't at a harvest size yet, so that's not how they got in), but somehow a couple of them managed to get inside and onto the newest leaf of my anthurium clarinervium!?! So random, and thankfully haven't found any more anywhere, but I have no idea how they managed it 😅
First time commenter here. Been following your channel for years! I use a similar castille soap solution and noticed the same type of damage when I initially used it. I think it's from hydrogen peroxide and/or too much of the solution getting trapped in the leaf sheath causing rot/burn on the new growth. Have omitted the hydrogen peroxide since and have been more conscious of not allowing too much water to get caught in sheaths and haven't had the issue since. PS cotton buds are the perfect tool to soak up trapped solution from the sheath - a little OTT I know 😊
All your plants are looking awesome! I love your collection. I have also been dealing with pests and your DIY mixture is great but I would suggest you remove the alcohol and the hydrogen peroxide- that should minimize the risk of damage on sensitive plants and new growth points👌🏻😊
I would move the H. Linearis a bit, because you would not want to get scale on that one! I got scale on mine this summer, out of no where. Never seen them before and suddenly they were here, there and every where. I had a massive happy Linearis and it bloomed every year. As long as yours and over double så thick and it was a hell to treat the Linearis. I unfortunately lost almost all the plant. I only have a small plant left but without any scale (I think) and I guard it like crazy. I honestly am so sad over that fricking plant as it was so big and beautiful and it was my absolute favorite. I know you love yours too, so I would just give you a heads up about the scale and it’s so diffecult to treat as there’s so many places for the scale to hide and sit. I hate scale and saw most of the damage on my Hoyas and jungle cactus. I hope you will get rid of the scale in your house and be aware of the spreading when you use scissers and touch.

lol same. Thrips are so bad I’ve had them for ages. For me, diatomaceous earth has helped a lot

Thrips are so damn annoying! I hope you get them all and I hope they never bother you again. 😅
How did you do it? Glad your winning the battle! ❤

I’m not sure if we use the same recipe but it sounds similar and the spray I make doesn’t burn or do any damage, here it is:
For a 32oz spray bottle:
-1/8 C tea tree soap
-1/8 C peppermint soap
-1/2 C rubbing alcohol
-1/2 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide
-top with water
Soap is Castile if that even matters.
