Your point on players who can go past opponents is the difference between City and Arsenal and why Arsenal still need signings this window. Even Saka doesn’t really do that because he gets doubled.
Morgan Rodgers was at Middlesbrough, and he played against Villa in the cup and absolute bossed the Villa midfield. That was the game that sealed his transfer.
With the set up 4-4-2 used by Aston Villa it was always going to be a tough game for Arsenal’s 4-3-3. Villa used a back 4 with FBs allowed to stay high and wide giving space for the CBs to cover up in the wide areas having Martinez play as the third player in a back three when building up. John McGin played a midfielders role but coming and moving to the wide areas to help give Arsenal a stretch which then leaves spaces in the central areas in the progressive phase for Rogers (a brilliant ball carrier, dribbler and runner of the ball) will come to pick up a pass and drive the ball into the final third. Villa had a plan to sit back and catch Arsenal on the break but unfortunately Arsenal had a similar plan for them so both teams were trying to slow their build ups in order to encourage high presses but as the game went on the tempo and believe from both clubs grew stronger so they tried to counter press as soon as possession was lost and the progressive team will look to counter attack with any given turnover. Overall I it was a game of quality.
