- THE BATTLE! Sony 24-105mm F4 G vs Sony 28-135mm F4 PZ
This is an interesting battle mainly for the fact that these lenses aren't really competing against each other. They were built for quite different uses but will get used by similar people to achieve a similar product. Confusing? Well hopefully I explain it in further detail in the video. I love the Sony 28-135mm F4 lens video video work as I know its weaknesses and its strengths. The 24-105mm F4 lens is my go-to lens mainly for the performance. It is really surprising how well it performs for its price and is highly recommended by me.

I use the 24 - 105 for promotional style filming where I can zoom and reframe because of the stiff zoom, it has better handheld stabilisation and is more compact and has closer focus distance.
I use the 28 - 135 for live theatre show style filming, smooth aperture and the zoom ring is always driven by a motor so all the zooms are ramped which means you can never mess up a zoom. The downside of that is that you can't do crash zooms. The minimum focus distance is bad but great for all live style filming jobs. The stabilisation is more sticky style so it's super steady when aimed at one point but not as floaty / flowing like the 24-105.
28-135 has some magic in its image..creamy & more cinematic

FYI: 95-95mm adapter ring is available for the mirage matte box. I am using it, working well with the 28-135.

I've had the 24-105 since it was released. My only issue is the jerkiness of the zoom when I use it for sports.

Both great lenses for video, I definitely prefer the manual snappy zoom of the 24-105. There is just too much delay on zooming the 28-135 that it makes it slower to frame up new shots. Which if you are zooming in and out and reframing heaps in a day adds up to a lot of wasted time waiting on a slow zoom motor.
Great for live events and corporate conferences though :)

You can also use a 95mm to 77mm step down ring and a 77mm variable ND filter and have no vignetting on the 28 - 135 even with the lens hood on if you choose (obviously with the hood on it's not easy to adjust the 77mm variable ND but just adding the note for anyone.)

Now, I have a question about 24-105 f4. It's gonna work for everyday private use? I mean like travel photography/video with my wife, maybe walks with the dogs, just run and gun lens for everything? I looking for glass for that type of photography. I wonder if f4 is enough for most of the situations and bokeh in portraits. Also I'm a event/weeding photographer, but for that case I use 35 f1.4 and 85 f1.8, so the sony 24-105 will be only for private use.
What do you think? Will this lens will be good enough or maybe looking for something else like Tamron 28-75 G2?
Rent it (the 24-105) see if you like it. Pixel peepers don't like it. It (the design) is getting old, Sony could give it a refresh. I do own one, but am moving to smaller lighter lens (e.g., the newer 24-50 & 16-25).
The 28-135 was way ahead of it's time. It pairs great with a fx3. It is a video lens. Not a photo lens like the 24-105
Certainly is good for certain use cases. I personally just love the 24-105
It's too big for FX3 and even FX6. A new PZ 24-105 is needed.
Will autofocus on a moving subject work when zooming on 28-135? The goal is to shoot models walking up and down the catwalk while zooming. Sony A 7-4 Camera
24-105 is actually parfocal, or at least very likely. For this I just tested again and I can tell that's true.
I personally think the biggest difference is the power zoom. If you need the power zoom, go 28-135. If you don't, 24-105 is actually almost better in every way (except for manual focus ring).
One more thing, if 28-135 is considered for FS5 and FS7, then 24-105 is for FX6. The kit lens for FX6 is 24-105.

@Un1corn Sorry to say, the 24-105mm f4 is not parfocal in any way. I can say that with 100% certainty.
To add to the confusion of the explanation the 28-135mm f4 PZ is also technically not "optically parfocal" either.... it just has programming wizardry in the lens that it knows the exact amount it's focus shifts by at any point of the zoom range, and it can do a parfocal correction on the fly itself (not with AF). So it works effectively as a parfocal lens, but only 'simulates' it, rather than having a parfocal optical design.
@@jamesandcamera thanks for clearing that up James! Makes sense because the zoom is power zoom so they can do firmware to make it seem parfocal. Power zoom certainly is the key factor here and I personally am not a fan hahaha

Hi James, I have a problem with 24-105 and motor gimbal dji rsc2. The zoom lens is too discontinuous hard and motor gimbal not fluid for this. If a buy a 28 135, have a problem in photography mode? Have you a alternative for good video and photo with same focal length?

Great info here, that 24-105 looks extremely versatile. Do you think it better suits you than a 24-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8. ? Having one lens on run and gun , or like w kids , where they wouldn’t allow you to wait for the right focal length to switch In the moment.
F4 is really dark for interiors (if you love base iso or just a bit of iso like me). Its same like f2.8 can be a bit too dark for nighttime. But for outside its good. You have to answer yourself where you film the most
Yeah f4 is pretty slow but if you have a7iv or a7siii you have really great low light performing cameras. The OSS is a big winner for me when using my FX6
