  • In this episode of the Jaguar XJC Restomod project Tom and James discuss the work Tom’s done on building the rear axle for the 1970s coupe.
    A lot of time, effort (& money!) has gone into making it suitable for the extra power the XJR engine will be putting through the rear wheels.
    Another key difference to this axle and the one in the car now is the introduction of the Limited Slip Differential and the conversion to outboard discs from inboard discs it would have had at time.
    There were a few reasons Jaguar opted for a inboard brakes in period:
    1) It offers a reduction in the unsprung weight of the wheel hubs, as this no longer includes the brake discs and calipers.
    2) Braking torque is applied directly to the chassis, rather than being transferred to it through the suspension arms.
    However, there are some disadvantages, such as brake cooling - as it is more difficult to arrange for cooling air to flow over the rotor.
    In the race cars in almost all cases they are converted to a outboard disc set up and those that continue with inboard require air ducting to prevent / limit brake fade.
    Secondly, the maintenance and working on the brakes is more complex than traditional outboard brakes and changing discs and pads becomes more labour intensive - not a problem for us but is more challenging for the ‘home mechanic’ rather than a traditional set up.
    Hope you enjoy this next instalment - we are busy editing the engine rebuild update (Part 5) so make sure you like, share, subscribe and comment below!

    Jaguar production. Did 4.2s have a limited slip diff? Yes ……… possibly! 😂
    I’m loving the build.

    Really enjoying this build series, what’s the weight of the super charged 6 cylinder engine going to be like compared to a V12?

    Excellent video, love the Resto mods. Are you saying that you can simply bolt on an early subframe the outer hubs/driveshaft and brakes from an XK to convert to outboard disks ? What's the minimum rim dia needed for them?

    Please can you do a video on the modified rear axle with the outboard disc's as I have been thinking about doing this to my 1990 XJ-S 3.6 Manual. I have seen many other people having this modification but not how its done. Thanks for the great work so far, I'm sure I speak for everyone. We are all enjoying the XJ-CR coming to life and we are looking forward to it running and driving.

    This is looking so good!!
    I have seen that you have blocked off the XJS speed sensor. How are you going to get a speed signal?
    I am doing the same swap atm and I will be using a electrical S3 speedo with the XJS speed sensor. Not sure if it will work but I will try.

    Just found your XJC-R playlist after seeing you talk to Wayne Scott. Is there any chance you can give more details on the XK8 outboard brake conversion. I know about the later XJS style but not XK8. Maybe an article in Jaguar Enthusiast mag ? Thanks for all the videos they are great.

    G'day Tom, refurbishing my 88 XJ-S V12 IRS now, bought all the bits etc. so a bit late for your modification. Any chance of a video on 'How to refurbish an IRS?" most of the stuff on You Tube to do the job being videoed by rank amatuers (like me). Great series, well done.

    Would love to hear details on how to use the xk8 parts. Any custom work required or does it all bolt up?

    • @tomlenthallsworkshop
      @tomlenthallsworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - custom work is required to make everything fit. We developed a similar set up for our XJS race car hence going down this route (we don’t use the XK8 brakes in the race car). 👍

  • @martingibb517
    @martingibb517 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I see that the brake discs are now external rather than original inboard, is that an easy conversion to make to an existing IRS axle or did you have to use a later axle ?

    • @tomlenthallsworkshop
      @tomlenthallsworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We used a later axle - this is a 1994 XJS set up. For further details, check out the ‘description’ of the video (text) which outlines a bit more detail 👍

    @mikekennedy9383 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm curious why you went with the XK8 drive shafts, hubs and brakes rather than a mid-90s XJS set up? Are the XK8 drive shafts stronger or do they just work better with the XK8 hubs and brakes?

  • @tomtht3355
    @tomtht3355 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Is it a mid 1990's xjs axle unit? I didn't know about the xk8 parts interchange, that is interesting!

    • @tomlenthallsworkshop
      @tomlenthallsworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Oliver - yes the axle unit is from a 1994 XJS that we have overhauled. We developed the XK8 parts to fit for our race car (except for the brakes). It works well and XK8 parts are plentiful which helps with the race cars!
