I cannot put into words what Whiteys music has done for me over the years. Everything from very very dark nights alone to flying 100+ down the highway on top of the world with a smile on my face. This life is truly something else man, and Whitey speaks its language. Best gift I ever recieved was from my wife. All of his albums on vinyl, which she bought on eBay for triple the price because they were limited amount. If you ever read this brother, know I'd pay for a plane ticket to fly you out and kick it for the day. Just to hear the story behind this carnage. Hopefully we get more. Great thanks for the great shakes.
The same way people feel the need to clap four times when listening to the intro song of the Friends show, this song gives me the same need when he says "That I...Cant live without...*CLAP CLAP* Anything..."
Just finished all of volume 4. Very much enjoyed it, all great tracks. I was going to start listening to the other volumes but something keeps bringing me back to listen to this song and I can't quite put my finger on it. If you're reading the comments, thanks for your work.
I wonder why they haven't made a documentary about you yet. You combine so many different genres and are a really creative artist. It's hard to describe, but intitially I just listen to your music and the more I listen to it, the more I think about the lyrics. I've got your book but I hope you'll do another one at some time in the future, where you talk about the story behind your songs. Is there some studio footage of you, some making of content or anything? My favorite song of yours is "Sweet Words For The Sour". It's incomparable to any other song out there. I don't know what went on inside of you while coming up with this song, but it's a stroke of genius.
well hey, he shows us that modern songs can be politically charged, loving AND damn catchy all at once! of course, that would upset the current popular music industry, what with its tagline ‘shitty music unto terrifyingly transient yuppies’ (S.M.U.T.T.Y)!
i've been going through the roughest patch in my life so far and this song always pops up. i don't know what it is about it though. maybe comforting? i'm not sure, but it always seems to be there for me. it's like a free alternative to therapy. thank you for all your albums man, including the times EP.
This song has recently become one of my favorite songs. The great sounds to a good tune and lyrics that hit incredibly close to home and help me feel validated and not so alone in who I am. I would love to hear other people's interpretations of the lyrics, especially Whitey's. Thank you for the excellent song.
Ok maybe I can get this cleared up here; the entire internet seems to be confused about one of the lyrics. Right after the interview: “I don’t need permission *Something something* Holding my position Changing my decisions” Some say the line is ‘forgetting ambitions’ but there is literally no way that’s it. Unless it’s just a case of Shakespearean levels of weird syllable stress. sounds kinda like ‘public exhibitions’ if you ask me. So what is it? Also, gotta say it since I’m here; this song is a certified bop-aroni and yes please.
Descending the stairs I start with the feeling That something I needed was lost And going through my pockets I wasn't really sure what it was And walking through the morning air I get a feeling that something Was no longer there So I went through all my pockets again And didn't know what I lost [Bridge] Then back up the stairs That night when I switched On the light it felt empty and dark The answer came through To me clear as a voice From above [Chorus] That I Can live Without AnythingIf I Can live Without love [Verse 2] I don't need a million things Need a brighter screen Need a tropical dream I don't need the latest wheels Just to roll me around I don't need to dress to impress Keeping up with the rest Stamp a brand on my chest I don't need to read About the breeding of the greedy and loud [Bridge] I don't need position Now I need confession Now I need a session to talk Nothing's important Now I'm living somewhere above [Chorus] Cause I Can live Without Anything Now I Can live Without love Cause I Can live Without Anything Now I Can live Without love (Love...) [Break] (Interviewer & Charles Bukowski) - What's your definition of love? - Love? It's kind of like, you know, when you see a fog in the morning, when you wake up before the sun comes out. It's just there a little while, and then it burns away... - Really? - Absolutely - It burns away? - Yes. Quickly [Verse 3] I don't need permission Public exhibitions Holding my position Changing my decisions Wondering just why And where, and how, and when And what is allowed Late night complications Futile conversations Endlessly revolving Through the same few situations I don't need to read About the breeding of the greedy and loud (Getting louder, and louder, and louder, and louder...) [Bridge] I don't need position Now I need confession Now I need a session to talk Nothing's important Now I'm living somewhere above (Above, above, above, above, above, above, above, above...) [Chorus] Cause I Can live Without Anything Now I Can live Without love (love, love, love, love...) Cause I Can live Without Anything Now I Can live Without love (Without love)
The part when you talk to the girl is my favorite part, it just feels ominous like something happened and now the whole song is about denial, or maybe he finally escaped depression because of tragedy.

Such a great song with a beautiful Bukowski quote.

Thank you for the excellent song.
the enagmatic and harsh realization is put very well into this song, a brief sigh and back to walking down the steps
Favorite song on this volume

Descending the stairs
I start with the feeling
That something I needed was lost
And going through my pockets
I wasn't really sure what it was
And walking through the morning air
I get a feeling that something
Was no longer there
So I went through all my pockets again
And didn't know what I lost
[Bridge]
Then back up the stairs
That night when I switched
On the light it felt empty and dark
The answer came through
To me clear as a voice
From above
[Chorus]
That I
Can live
Without
AnythingIf I
Can live
Without love
[Verse 2]
I don't need a million things
Need a brighter screen
Need a tropical dream
I don't need the latest wheels
Just to roll me around
I don't need to dress to impress
Keeping up with the rest
Stamp a brand on my chest
I don't need to read
About the breeding of the greedy and loud
[Bridge]
I don't need position
Now I need confession
Now I need a session to talk
Nothing's important
Now I'm living somewhere above
[Chorus]
Cause I
Can live
Without
Anything
Now I
Can live
Without love
Cause I
Can live
Without
Anything
Now I
Can live
Without love
(Love...)
[Break] (Interviewer & Charles Bukowski)
- What's your definition of love?
- Love? It's kind of like, you know, when you see a fog in the morning, when you wake up before the sun comes out. It's just there a little while, and then it burns away...
- Really?
- Absolutely
- It burns away?
- Yes. Quickly
[Verse 3]
I don't need permission
Public exhibitions
Holding my position
Changing my decisions
Wondering just why
And where, and how, and when
And what is allowed
Late night complications
Futile conversations
Endlessly revolving
Through the same few situations
I don't need to read
About the breeding of the greedy and loud
(Getting louder, and louder, and louder, and louder...)
[Bridge]
I don't need position
Now I need confession
Now I need a session to talk
Nothing's important
Now I'm living somewhere above
(Above, above, above, above, above, above, above, above...)
[Chorus]
Cause I
Can live
Without
Anything
Now I
Can live
Without love
(love, love, love, love...)
Cause I
Can live
Without
Anything
Now I
Can live
Without love
(Without love)
