The Kwakwaka'wakw (or Kwakiutl) are one of my favorite Native American tribes. Their history, culture and artwork are all so fascinating. I was delighted to see that they were included in this awesome program! 👏
Does anyone else notice that Native American totem poles bear a resemblance to Polynesian tiki statues? Could the Native Americans and Polynesians have come in contact with each other, and as a result, influenced each other’s cultures?
We definitely had contact. I don’t know about the northwest but we Polynesians had contact with the Inca, we traded with one another. Chickens were introduced by Polynesians to South America while the sweet potato was introduced to Polynesians by the Natives. The emperor Tupac Yupanquil is said to have navigated with Polynesians to the islands of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Mangareva to meet with the kings of these islands. On Rapa Nui there are structures that could show a potential Inca influence. There’s also theories that Hawaiians and the Chumash of California had contact due to some similarities and that the Mapuche tribes also had contact due to similar words like "toki" meaning azde or "kumara/cumar" meaning sweet potato.
This is similar to the Ogham writing system in that it is carved upwards from a base, only semantic and cylindrical in nature. You heard me right, the totem pole is a writing system in its own right.
I wonder if it's a connection or coincidence because totems have also been found in south america, mesoamerica, pacific islands( oceania), africa, etc.
Because true Aboriginals or "native Americans" were 'black'... It crazy to even see them making totem pole smh.. I hope that don't make them look all European smh, you see how they did jesus
If I could only learn more about the tribes my mom is from and my dad is from. Knowledge is powerful

I have always heard the Haidas had some connection too Polynesians, heard it before over the years but never really looked into it.
Asians from long ago did very similar things, too.
