  • In November of 2019, I made a trip to South Florida to see a plane that someone has been contemplating giving to Fantasy of Flight for several years. Come along on the S-39 with me and my head FoF maintenance man, Jack McCloy, on our journey to south Florida to see what will actually come to be. Whatever happens, it should be a fun ride.

Great video. I was the one who painted the S-39 at the New England Air Museum. Made the Hartford Courant placing the Decal of the Civial Air Partol. I was at the dedication made the paper again and met the Co Pilot that night on that historic rescue. Had many hours on that plane..

Since the Sikorsky was involved I'll pass on a little WW2 flying boat story I got from stepfather. Stepfather himself flew as navigator in Wellington bombers, but his cousin was nav in Sunderland flying boats on anti-uboat patrol flying out of Pembroke in South Wales. Apparently there was an unofficial tradition of taking a picnic hamper with them on patrol. After skirting around the Channel Islands they would head into Biscay at low level hoping to catch uboats on the surface en-route to and from their bases, and after that there was a leg of the patrol route that took them out beyond the range of the Ju88's the Germans used as long range fighters. They would then climb up to a less bumpy altitude where they could relax, brew tea in the galley and break out the hamper which had to have little triangular cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off. For a long time I doubted this story, until I came across a reference to the practice being banned - and you don't ban something that isn't happening so it's true! So very English!

Viper twenty2 my father flew Sunderlands out of the same base with RAAF and I am fairly certain that picnics were not on the agenda. They spent their time trying to stick extra machine gun mounts on their planes as well as swap engines for more reliable and powerful American radials.

I will throw out a guess could it have been the last DC 3 sleeper left. I know it's in FLA so it would have been a short move. One thing for sure when Kermit shows up on a ramp he will be in the coolest aircraft there. Thanks for the ride along.

The Sikorsky is just the coolest thing ever. Just so much the embodiment of a flying boat. It literally looks like someone took a boat and stuck some wings, floats, a tail and an engine on it. But the spacious, angular cabin is just gorgeous.

There are (or at least were) up to 7 Grumman OV-1 Mohawks (as per the airworthy list on wikipedia) based out of that airport. You can even see two, and maybe the fuselage of a third in the google maps image of Lantana. I'm not sure if the Mohawk is vintage enough to spark Kermits interest, but it's the best candidate I've found so far.
