As someone who works in a wet lab and does a ton of bench work, i think the best watch for a chemist who is hands on is either a TimeX Ironman or any Casio Digital, but more specifically a G shock. Having something that has a stop watch function and an alarm is very convenient and waay more functional than a Rolex or any other luxury brand.
Depends how precise you need to be, I find a diver a little easier to set with gloves on! But I"m a biologist so our science is a little... squishier in terms of timing.
I've got a Tag Heuer Link Chronograph for that. It hardly scratches and the crystal is still pristine (after 20 years!). And I wear it always for everything. And I did spill some interesting stuff on it...
I was that man . Seiko chronograph alarm , quartz with hardlex crystal which was pretty scratched after 25 years of daily wear. Runs at minus 19s/d to this day.
I don’t have flashy watches. 10 years ago, my grail was a Rolex GMT, but the games involved in getting one were disappointing. I threw my name on the list for a Batman. But after a year, and some discussion about the length of the wait list, I moved on. I did get a Tudor GMT Pepsi. And I’ve come to appreciate the non-flashy old school appearance. Since then, I’ve stuck with tool watches, and I wear them when I feel like it. A pair of Black Bay 58’s, a 925 and a full bronze, IWC Mark XX, Oris Aquis cal.400. Tudor Pelagos carbon FXD. I’m after an Omega and a Zenith next. I did get a Grand Seiko Shunbun, and I do wear it sparingly. Maybe that is my grail watch? It doesn’t feel flashy, but it does feel more special than my other watches. I do like the new Lake Suwa SLGA019. Can I have 2 grail watches?
I got my GMT Master II BLNR 2 years ago, which had been a grail of sorts for me at the time. While the newness has worn off, I’ve now had time to make memories and live life with the watch, which makes it that much more my watch and special to me. Further, I ended up selling a lot of my watches after getting it because there was no other watch I wanted to wear over the BLNR on a given day. Even now, the criteria I’m considering for new watches is, “Will I ever want to wear it over the BLNR” and I got to say, it’s a hard bar to clear
Totally same for me and my Eichi II. There are many great watches exist and more coming in the future, but the memories and connections between us isn't any new watch can surpass.
I’ve worn my Omega Seamaster and Rolex GMT for 15 years and never tire of both of them. Thing of beauty - joy forever. Fun the both of you on an end of winter walk in Europe while I swelter in heat in the antipodes.
Just one reaction: I wore my Grail watch for 16 years (when it broke) and I loved looking at it every day. Now, the watch maker managed to fix it (that was supposed to be impossible), and i still wear it the most of the watches i own. And I did that with every grail watch I bought since I was a teen (grail was more modest, true)..
Jenni, I love that you mentioned high end sewing machines! I’ve been high end Swiss sewing machines enthusiast, but starting to dip into the watch collection rabbit hole😂. I’d love to know what’s your favorite sewing/overlocker machine brands. 😅
I have an Omega SeaMaster Pro 300meter from 1999, Two tone with a white dial- I can totally rock that watch with a suite. Purchased it new all those years ago- it has always been one of my favorites.Lots of wrist time. The New Paris Olympic white dial two tone brings back that look. But the Neo-vintage one that I have has a two tone bracelet with is nicer than the new watch's bracelet.
This evening, I was chatting with someone about my mom & her hobby of sewing. She used an old Singer sewing machine with the manual foot-pad. She really enjoyed that.
To ISJ74, yes the SMP300 white is as awesome as it looks. It was my first luxury watch, and it's still my favorite of the 4 luxury watches I own. It's simply divine on the rubber strap.
I wear my grail (Explorer 36) most days, I like that its my grail and when i look back in life it will be the watch i was known for wearing. The one to make the memories in.
Did I hear "Invicta" during this video? I still LOVE my first Invicta S1 sport watch with the orange dial. I got so many great comments while wearing it. Even from children who loved the look. That was a pleasant surprise for me. I like to look at high end watches but I don't want to pay the high prices to make their owners richer than they need to be.
Best watch for Walter White: Rolex Milgauss. Yes, yes, it is a Rolex, but it's not super well-known or even all that flashy (despite the lightning bolt seconds hand). I've never worn either, but I would bet that it's a lot more discreet on the wrist than that "look at me! I'm square!" Monaco. It's still not a perfect fit for a chemist, but it *was* made with scientists in technicians in mind. Bonus points: The most recent (and last) version of the watch was introduced in 2007 - which is just a year before season 1 of BB aired, so it would've been available both in RL and, since BB is set in "the present", also in the BB universe. Alternative WW-watch: Any not-too-flashy looking GS with a spring drive movement. Expensive, super well made and very interesting from a technical POV.
Another cracking Q&A Jenni and Kai. A great bit about the holy trinity of watches. A modern re-evaluation would be hard not to include the now evergreen or rather black resin Casio F-91W as this must be one of the longest continued production runs for a model unless I'm mistaken (I usually am mistaken) produced since 1989 if I recall correctly (my memory isn't as good as it was either) so that's 35 years!. Oh and I still wear one and yes I do replace the battery when it's flat and not throw it away. I have purchased a spare one last year just in case my old friend falls off its mortal coil. Great commentary from Kai once again not letting you off the hook with the questions like the SMP300 v the AT. Great stuff and thanks for sharing.
You two are delightful and I really enjoyed this video. More please. I have about 15, Datejust Rolex 1965, Cartier Santos, JL Reverso, Lecoultre Memovox, Patel Calatrava 1950’s, even a tiny 30mm AP Jules Calendar on red band, more also but I really buy what I like not what’s popular and I appreciate them all. Keep your videos coming!
I absolutely buy to wear. I do have a few that I consider "museum" pieces that I wouldn't even wear. They'd just sit in a case for display as art pieces.
I have quite many different watches, from rather cheap ones to more expensive ones. When you were talking about the three top watches you made a joke about three watches that could be the trio. You talked about Steinhart. I have three Steinharts and they are indeed cheap if you compare them with the others, but they are really very good and very understated.
Enjoyed the video ! I used the proceeds of a 20yr savings policy to buy a Rolex 18ct Sub with black dial and ceramic bezel . I wanted this watch forever! However , it was so heavy and overt that it spent more time in the box . I sold it after 3yrs to a dealer for cash . If I had kept it , it would have doubled in value doh !!
Thank you for all these answers . I have learnt a lot . I am glad and proud that you like your CARTIER SANTOS . For woman, it is truly a master piece . Steel matches perfectly with gold, the watche get the perfect size . i know that all the watches are manufactured in switzerland but CARTIER is a French Brand . For men , i prefer the CARTIER TANK (americaine) .
Not sure about only wearing a grail on special occasions; I think it’s ok to wear it the majority of the time but still get a few days a week with some of your other favorites. I’m currently wearing Batman in Dubai at the tennis tournament - surrounded by APs. I’m middle class! 🤣
You are not middle class, because you don't conform to wearing what everyone else is. You are wearing what You like. All the others are just taking part in a pissing contest about who has the most expensive watch. I would definitely wear my Omega Seamaster from 1963 there and be quite sure no one else is wearing one. 😊

(粤, 闽, 客). Also on a NATO. I have a 9 inch wrist, average Dutch. The Rolex? We call it: 平平付西 ping ping fu xi. In Dutch. ( buy buy money).

It's a waste to buy your grail and not use it every day. I'm pretty sure that before you owned it you thought: "Oh, if I only had that watch... I'd wear it all the time!". To me that's a grail.

DAE cringe a bit when they hear someone say they want "A Rolex"? Shouldn't you have some kind of preference? It just shows how many Rolex customers don't really want the watch so much as the coronet. If that's what they want they can go vintage and get one for under $3000. They don't even need to buy a Rolex, many vintage Tudors feature a coronet and you might be able to find one under $2000.
When you mention grail watch, I started to make oarallels with relationships. At the beginning feels special but after you wear it all the time you treat it like norhing special. 😂
I know you keep getting camera suggestions but please consider stopping down your aperture. So much bokeh (blurred background) softness that it is distracting. Love the content as always! Please keep these walkie talkies coming
In two years many Rolex may be easy to get and maybe at a discount! 😳. Rolex production is up and the grey market is going to continue to dump back the inventory they have been hoarding as demand drops
Good luck with that. Production is only up a little. And since Rolex could easily kill off the back door of the AD flipping but didn’t, they will probably still underproduce the popular steel sports watches to get the free publicity from ‘Rolex as an asset class.’
@@WestCoastAce27 they just built an additional factory. Demand has slackened for all luxury goods. The economy isn’t very strong and people are anticipating a market correction. Prices have been plummeting. I’ve had two ADs tell me Rolex has never made more watches than right now.
