To avoid all the problem with the springs just put the springs on the shoes then install them as a set with a large screw driver or small crow bar. It makes the job easier and does not require special tools.
(putting springs on) "We're going to take a little break....(so you don't hear me swearing like a sailor)" Or at least that would be me whenever I need to get brake springs on.
