Welcome back, sewing pals! Today I am showing you how to make a puffer coat...completely from scratch. I made my first quilted puffer jacket about two years ago and was pretty frustrated that there weren’t more resources for making a jacket like this. Most of the posts and videos I found suggested using a pre-quilted blanket or sleeping bag. While that is a great idea, I wanted to have full control over the design and construction of my puffy coat, so I opted to quilt it myself (and of course, share the process!).

Great video! I would!d love to see a more detailed tutorial on how you drafted and sewed up the lapped zipper/ zipper shield. One of my pet peeves right now in coat/ jacket making is a lack of this feature in so many patterns!

this is perfect. I love how you adjusted the width to fit you and how you used a 2 way zip so you can unzip from the bottom if you are climbing over logs up hill. The tutorial for the pocket was great!

I just got done making a puff jacket for my son , and I'm going to make mine next week . we are from the Caribbean in Trinidad and we're going to visit Switzerland for Christmas this year ,so I'm very busy making all the sweaters and gloves,hats and now the jackets . his looks super and he loves it 😊

Your coat is so cool and looked so gorgeous on you! I was also really glad to see it came out a bit too small!!! I know that sounds a bit mad!! but you watch things on TH-cam and everything always works out perfectly then you try and make the same garment and it doesn't always turn out that way. It's great to see that although things don't always go to plan it doesn't matter, there is always a way round it!! I loved this video thank you!!!

Wow. That came out great. I always wondered how they were made but you broke down the process and made it seem so manageable. BTW I live in a very hot country so no opportunity to wear this where I live.

Pretty amazing Casey! For me, the first step is to sew the easiest coat possible after practicing on jackets. Once I get the fit down, it would be fun to actually make a long quilted jacket out of quilting cotton.

This project is wonderful, I just bought a puffer coat and was looking for some refashion ideas when I found this video. Now I want to make my own, maybe one day. Love the separate stand collar and hood, on my coat there is no seperate collar, just the hood that extends to the front and buttons there. I don’t particularly like the way the hood hangs at the back, a separate hood would hang better.

Hello, thank you for your wonderful detailed video. I’m about to tackle making a parka. FYI I found a source for fabrics and zippers used in making winter outerware in the north in Canada. Brador Fabrics in Montreal. I found a simple parka pattern from MacPhee Workshop in Alberta

I bought a new puffy jacket last year, but I lost a lot of weight since then. Not saying you should do a video specially for me, but I can't be the only one with this problem. Could you maybe show how to take apart and size down an existing puffy jacket?
That would be tailoring, no need to take it apart
Amazing work. I am inspired to do a similar coat but with one I already own that is now way too big for me. I want to start by shortening the coat and taking it in on the sides at least 1". I've had it sitting in my closet for two years thinking it's too nice to give away, so why not use it as a practice coat since I wasn't wearing it anyway. I'm a beginner so this may not go well, but if I "just" shorten it and take in the sides, that might be all I need. This way I don't have to make the entire coat, use the same sleeves, hood and collar.

@@PatternScout watching this video made it WAY less intimidating to go ahead and use my prequilted coating fabric from Mimifabrics. Just not sure what pattern to use as the Clare coat isn't in my size. A couple German patterns, a style arc option... Decisions!

I just tried to do a quick search through pattern companies that came to mind, but they were pretty limited! I live in Asia where available parkas are sized to be broader than longer. I inevitably fall into the problem of the torso being just right when the sleeves are too short or the other way around with the sleeves just right while the rest of me swims in cold air. This tutorial was a huge help as I had no idea how to size patterns. This isn't the exact pattern I'm looking for, but I'll find a nice cheap puffer that fits well and pack it right so it looks as clean, taught and quite frankly expensive as yours. I hate puffers with a very saggy shell. Yours came out better than most off the rack ones.
By buying a cheap puffer, I intend to take it apart for patterns.

Such a lovely coat. Although you used and altered a previous jacket pattern of yours, would you consider creating a puffy coat pattern similar to this one?
Very nice, i noticed you had the zipper foot intalled backwards, i was surprised that it can even be instalked that way.
Thanks! You know, I have probably been using it that way the whole time without even realizing it (i've tried to put it on the both ways and always have trouble with it! It's a finicky little foot! haha).

Hi! Thanks for the video, I would like to ask, are there specific kinds of sewing machines to use for when sewing thick materials like you did or it’s the needles that matters most and most sewing machines can do the work with just the right strong needle? Thanks 💚
The sewing machine i use is a Pfaff IDT Select and it sews pretty much everything I try on it (highly recommend!). For a project like this, you might be able to do it with a basic machine (Singer or Brother, for ex), but it might be a bit of a struggle for some of the thicker seams. So it definitely helps to have a heavier duty machine. And needles make a big difference...I used heavier duty microtex needles for the puffer because they are extra sharp and work best on fabrics like nylon to prevent snags. The needles went through the nylon and batting without much resistance. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Whicg model of the Pfaff IDT do you own? I'm looking at their website right now and am interested in purchasing one in the near future. I currently own a Singer Patchwork 7285Q and a Janome 1050DC. I have doubts that my Singer can handle these thicker fabrics. Not sure about the Janome as I haven't gotten it out yet after buying it in 2020 😂

Thanks for posting this, great info. Did you ever consider waterproofing your seams? or rather have you worn it while it was snowing or raining and not found it an issue?
Hey Shelby! 👋 I did consider it but decided not to waterproof the seams since I knew this jacket wouldn't be worn for extended periods in harsh weather (also it just felt like a lot of work! 😅). The fabric is not waterproof, but it is super lightweight and dries really quickly. I have worn it a couple of times for walks while it was snowing (about an hour or so) and it kept me dry and warm. If it got drenched for a long period of time it might soak through eventually. But so far, it's held up well to the elements!
Hello. I love the finishing of your coat. I’m currently making one for my son following your video, and I gotta said, it’s coming out really nice. Do you recommend a video I can watch to make the placket part? Ive searched on TH-cam and all of them are showing shirt plackets, but nothing to what you’ve used. TIA!
Hey, thanks so much for watching! I can't recommend a specific video for that part, but it is essentially a strip of fabric that I folded in half with batting in the middle. Then I added several rows of topstitching to secure the batting and "quilt" the placket before adding it to the zipper construction. I hope that is helpful! I should have shown that step in more detail!
Did you allow for the extra side inserts when you cut your lining?
Regarding your coat size, did you go up one coat size because of the bulk or did you stay with your normal coat size? I also noticed you added the feature under the arms and the side seams.

Thanks for watching! The batting holds up great in colder temps. This coat is so warm in these Michigan winters and I wear it constantly! I think the flannel lining also helps a lot to retain body heat and feel extra cozy.

Do you think you would use a walking foot to quilt the fabric?
Hey, Great video, Can you say what stitch length you used? Im thinking of using my industrial walking foot on this- see any problem with that?
I probably used a 2.5 mm stitch length (that is typically my go-to). I've never tried a walking foot, but from what I hear, they are great for a project like this!
Please show your method for attaching the fur here. I don't use instantagram, yeah I know. Very backwards, oh well. Maybe on both?
I have yet to get to re-attaching the fur collar properly haha! But if I ever do i will share it here for sure. Also, I have been pretty absent on Instagram lately, so I can relate! :)
I just bought a parachute jacket and I wanna turn it into a puffer jacket because the material is so thin. Is it possible ? Any advices ?
I made my own goose down parka and I had but one pattern to choose from because I'm not a woman. Please make more patterns for mens clothing!
