At the beginning, we see the mother who lives in this apartment with who we can guess is her daughter. She works a regular retail job, which we see her working and then come home with what seems like a small amount of money. Although clearly distraught, her daughter lifts her spirits and this is when we cut to her opening an envelope with clearly more money than she made at the retail job. If we know anything about japanese culture, this is clearly borrowed or loaned money which becomes important later. Afterward, we see a happy compilation of her and her daughter going places, getting dresses, etc. These are all things that require money and not once do we see her working during this time. But, all of a sudden, those debts catch up to her. We see her get beaten and when they try to get their money from her, its clear she spent it all on trying to give her daughter amazing life. Just to explain what happened in the flashback as a manga reader, or at least how i understood it. No hate or anything but to me it seems like you didnt understand what happened? Correct me if I'm wrong Yes, it was her daughter. Now, as you gathered, the mom worked as a sex worker as well as other jobs in order to make money. The people who stole her daughter were debt collectors/yakuza that she owed, however it would appear she had used money meant to pay them for the daughter's dress, so they had come in when she couldn't pay in full and then took her daughter and whatnot. She chases after them but fails to catch up and feeling hopeless that her daughter was taken, she finds a roof and does the one thing she and her daughter loved, dancing. With that, she does one final dance before jumping off the building to her death, which was the thud. The anime couldn't really show that since it's kinda triggering but did try to imply it as much as they could. In the dance scene there's a brief part that shows the edge of the building as she does the final leap, followed by the thud. The scene where aira sees her, she's dead. A spirit. Aira sees her bcoz its somewhat believed that children are more intune to see spirits when they're around 7 years old. Aira confused her for her mother since her own died and as a child she was just confused on what happened to her. Acro silky, seeing aira and hearing her call her mommy, remembers having a daughter of her own, but since it's been so long(implied) or the fact that she is now a spirit, she can't remember her daughter's face. She herself then confuses her actual daughter for aira and that's why she becomes obsessed with her and whatnot And at the end of the chapter, it is implied the daughter had died not long after being kidnapped as its a panel of mother and daughter walking together as it says "take them to a kinder world" Highly recommend checking out the manga if you want to see how it played out for yourself. They went wild this one!
@@TheCasualBrian I mean it makes sense episode 7 is pretty clear about what happens and how it makes sense. It doesn't require much more than the average thinking logic to catch on to the details.,
nah cause this is just stupid if u aint understanding what the backstory was trying to tell that sounds like a YOU problem, it gave a great visual storytelling backstory that barely has dialogue just music and some vague scenes that would leave you only for interpretations. the show did a great job to not just spoonfeed you w answers but give u just enough to tell whats going on. they know the viewers arent dumb enough to make the wrong assumption on what they are trying to tell(but well i guess u did) the show clearly implied the kid in the flashback was her daughter, aira thought that the ghost was her mom and gave us an amazing parallel between a mother who lost child and a child who lost a mother, its both the mother and the daughter's dream to do ballet(nothing is implied there that the daughter was being forced to do ballet by her mother) the episode shouldnt be downplayed because YOU cant understand whats going on while everyone else does
WHAT? I'm sorry, but you saying everyone is wrong to think it's a masterpiece and then go on to explain how you didn't understand the backstory is WILD! It's completely alright if, you didn't understand the story and therefore couldn't follow it and be emotionally invested. Hell, it's completely fine, if you understood everything and still didn't like it - It's your opinion and doesn't bother me in the slightest, because we're different people, but saying others are wrong because YOU don't get it, is making me hope, you are doing it on purpose to get a reaction and not because, you're actually serious.
@@TheCasualBrian As I said, there's nothing wrong with you not understanding the backstory, sometimes that happens to us all, but if there were holes that big everyone, who hasn't read the manga, would collectively not understand it. That's common logic. I haven't read the manga myself and saw no holes!
This is an argument of ambiguity in visual storytelling versus conventional. The comparison to one piece or Naruto doesn’t land here. Those stories pride themeselves on world building. The details are given to you but with purpose especially for pivotal characters. The lady in red’s story is left open-ended because these are memories being given to us through this “aura revival” for Aira as if this persons life is flashing before our eyes. The heart of that story is motherhood in an unforgiving world. Whatever narrative with the shady group of ppl taking her kid away isn’t the important thing here it’s that her kid was taken away and probably resorted to an even crueler life. There doesn’t have to be connecting threads because it was simply a mother who became a vengeful spirit longing for a daughter that she doesn’t even remember after death.
Also I can somewhat only give fault to the episode due to how ppl got confused not realizing the lady in red jumped off a building and died and later baby aira witness her lost spirit standing where she fell thus triggering her yokai form Tho that’s nitpicking because the show isn’t holding your hand and you aren’t able to fill in the gaps yourself
So there I was, just waking up and about to go take a shit, but before I got to do that, I got a shit take instead. This reeks of being contrarian for the sake of it. And, you made my morning poop less satisfying. 0/10, this is why I hate people named Brian. Typical Brian move.
If everyone else thought it was a masterpiece then it was. You might not have had the same connection to it, but that doesn't invalidate other people's opinions. Also don't over think stories. Like if I over think sanjis backstory it's stupid as hell. Sanji would have died on that island and zeff would have too. If you don't over think and just experience it then it's great.
Hey, I respect your opinion. Your gave a valid point, many people would disagree with but you stood on it. I for one don’t agree with your point. loved this episode. But if you didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else did, I feel kind of bad for you ngl. An anime like this is rare to see, and the way they presented that flashback is even more rare.
You’re entitled to your opinion my brother. I wanted to hear what you had to say and we on opposite sides of the fence on this for sure. The flashback was done well with the fast pace story telling. It was out of sequence with the running in black and white and connected back to her last moments she’s alive and was the connecting piece to show here transitioning after she was wondering as a spirit. That last part of the dancing shows the background moving until she and transitioned showing her falling into hear the splat sound. She self deleted and Aiya saw her as a spirit and she transitioned out of the gap of her daughter in her memory.
when aira called her “mommy” she was dead, you know cuz right before, she was dancing in the rooftop and jumped off, and you hear a thud. This might’ve not been obvious but I’ve heard somewhere that there’s strict rules about suic!de in Japan, so they made it more vague. Also, I don’t blame you for not knowing, but the daughter was taken by debt collectors because the mother spent all her money on the dress and couldn’t pay them the money she owed. If you understood more, it would live up to the hype.
Ignorance is a bliss, the reason the episode is so heart touching is because it is a reality that a lot of people face in real life. I will say this, I have definitely went through some real tear jerker, things like I want to eat your pancreas, or Grave of the fire flies, surely they had hit harder, but this is definitely a great episode, and contains a really good message and story behind it, shedding what people have went through in our world, too.
There's possibly a reason to why people can't understand your criticism, but maybe that's just because of the ignorance you may have looking into this episode. The world isn't against you, but that you are blind to why people find it good.
We are in the minority here, it kinda felt like a demon slayer episode? In the sense that in the sense that when tanjiro would kill the demons, their backstory would appear and then they would die? Idk, doesn't feel like DanDaDan to me, i was expecting some character to die so or smth like that, but I can't care a lot about this random-ass demon
Flawed analysis. When they did the aura transfer, Momo and Aira got a glimpse of Silky's backstory. And she spent time with the daughter. She is not a delinquent parent.
Your issue with the episode is that you wildly missed the point. That isn't even me trying to be disrespectful. You just genuinely missed the point. A lot of your questions regarding the backstory were either answered and you missed it, or just straight up irrelevant to be completely frank. For example, I don't really get why you're confused about why the daughter was taken. The mother was CLEARLY struggling financially, to the point she was literally selling her body ON TOP of working those odd jobs. It can be inferred from that alone that she was likely in debt. The guys that came in who took her daughter? They were either yakuza or loan sharks she owed money too. They took her daughter to either kill her because they threatened the mom, or to sell the daughter off in human trafficking as collateral for the money the mother owed. This isn't even really that important for the storytelling in the first place though that's the thing. A mother had her daughter taken away from her and she couldn't do anything about it. This was after we saw a montage of how much she loved her daughter. That alone was enough to make people feel something. Also you saying that the stories weren't really related or linked is also wrong. The entire point of showing Aira's past with her mother dying and her thinking the yokai was her mom was to show that Aira from a young age was experiencing the grief of losing her mother (even though she didn't fully understand it) and it just so happens that the yokai she ran into and thought was her mother (because she was desperately missing her mother) had lost her daughter. The two parallel each other. That's why Aira was the one to give acro-silky closure and made sure she passed on with no regrets...because it also served to allow Aira to express her love for her mother that she lost at a young age one more time.
I dont think its a "master piece", but its very well written and 90% of the way there. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece to be amazing story, hell nothing is truly a master piece
I thought it was fantastic, but I don't understand how it's supposed to make me feel for Aria. I definitely feel for Acro Silky, but the flashback hardly focused on Aria, so I'm not ready to fill out my Aria apology form yet. Also, nothing in the episode really made me forgive her for bullying Ken.

This man literally made a 12 minute long YT video on a 24 minute long anime episode just to be wrong. Last I checked my episode count was over 20,000 and I can say without doubt, this episode of DanDaDan was indeed a masterpiece. For me, the mother character is too reliant on the backstory. There's some light setup beforehand, but basically all the character work is left for the backstory and she is just an unengaging antagonist previously, with the very long backstory not having been earned. Also I despise people's discussion about this ep in relation to show/tell and visual storytelling and whatnot. I feel like anime fans have never understood this concept well.

Either everyone else is wrong or you are.
Bro she was already dead when she met Aira... The scene when she was dancing, she was on top of a rooftop and she fell of while dancing that why you can here the thud when its pitch black
that scene is when we are suppose to connect with her character
@@TheCasualBrian No, that is the scene where she dies.
@@TheCasualBrian that's literally when she dies, in the manga it actually shows her jumping off the rooftop to her death
SO anime needs to spoon feed you every single detail? What do I expect from One Piece glazer
No you dont but there is a minimum amount of details for a story to make sense
@@TheCasualBrian I'd argue that the episode met that minimum and more, since the majority of viewers "got" it. I appreciate and understand your viewpoint, which is valid, but you're likely in the minority since it's gotten near-universal critical acclaim when it comes to the animation, direction, voice-acting, music, etc.
Professional ballet dancers have even pointed out the care given to accurately representing the dance moves and techniques that no one but experts would be able to point out. They went wild this one!
@@TheCasualBrian I mean it makes sense episode 7 is pretty clear about what happens and how it makes sense. It doesn't require much more than the average thinking logic to catch on to the details.,
maybe 7 minutes of flashback is better than yapping for 1000 episode, idk maybe?
depends
nah cause this is just stupid if u aint understanding what the backstory was trying to tell that sounds like a YOU problem, it gave a great visual storytelling backstory that barely has dialogue just music and some vague scenes that would leave you only for interpretations. the show did a great job to not just spoonfeed you w answers but give u just enough to tell whats going on. they know the viewers arent dumb enough to make the wrong assumption on what they are trying to tell(but well i guess u did) the show clearly implied the kid in the flashback was her daughter, aira thought that the ghost was her mom and gave us an amazing parallel between a mother who lost child and a child who lost a mother, its both the mother and the daughter's dream to do ballet(nothing is implied there that the daughter was being forced to do ballet by her mother) the episode shouldnt be downplayed because YOU cant understand whats going on while everyone else does
I'll chalk this up to rage bait.
Also holy shit that like to dislike ratio is wild
its just an unpopular opinion
There were holes
Also I can somewhat only give fault to the episode due to how ppl got confused not realizing the lady in red jumped off a building and died and later baby aira witness her lost spirit standing where she fell thus triggering her yokai form
Tho that’s nitpicking because the show isn’t holding your hand and you aren’t able to fill in the gaps yourself
The reality is they left things out from the manga.
So there I was, just waking up and about to go take a shit, but before I got to do that, I got a shit take instead. This reeks of being contrarian for the sake of it.
And, you made my morning poop less satisfying.
0/10, this is why I hate people named Brian. Typical Brian move.
haha
Best comment almost shit myself, 9/10
If everyone else thought it was a masterpiece then it was. You might not have had the same connection to it, but that doesn't invalidate other people's opinions. Also don't over think stories. Like if I over think sanjis backstory it's stupid as hell. Sanji would have died on that island and zeff would have too. If you don't over think and just experience it then it's great.
true
Hey, I respect your opinion. Your gave a valid point, many people would disagree with but you stood on it. I for one don’t agree with your point. loved this episode. But if you didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else did, I feel kind of bad for you ngl. An anime like this is rare to see, and the way they presented that flashback is even more rare.
I liked the episode too I just didnt think it was a 10/10. It also turns out they censored the episode from the manga
"Everyone is wrong but me" yeah sure buddy
haha come on many its a title
There are no rules about it. It is up to the creators if they want to outright show it, be subtle or outright metaphorical.
I didnt know from the anime anything around her death or her job. They left out too much
@@TheCasualBrian everyone else, anime onlies included: understood the ep
This guy:I need everything spoonfed because thinking is hard
@@TheCasualBrian nah it was pretty self explanatory, you see her dancing on a rooftop, she jumps and you hear a thud.
what do you expect from an AI profile ? Trash take , that's what.
AI?
You found a way to get your clicks I see.
Nah DS is way different and done with a lot more care and caution
I can definitely see that
Flawed analysis.
I think it was a solid B but people say 10/10
I thought it was fantastic, but I don't understand how it's supposed to make me feel for Aria. I definitely feel for Acro Silky, but the flashback hardly focused on Aria, so I'm not ready to fill out my Aria apology form yet. Also, nothing in the episode really made me forgive her for bullying Ken.
Ohhhh brother stop trying to be different that shit is mad annoying, take it from Jman here this guy knows what's up
Hell yea! different opinions aren't a real thing!

I understand everything he’s saying, I also had to infer that she musta borrowed money from the yakuza and I also found out she jumped off a bridge due to this comment section. I also thought aria was her daughter. For the sake of understanding how the spirits can have tumultuous lives is great but I do feel as tho this episode was a visual cash grab. Now you do not have to agree with the last sentiment but we’re not about to act like the daughter getting kidnapped wasn’t left field.
I do understand the hype and the sadness tho I can’t help u with that gang 😂😂😂
Dandadan is peak, fact not an opinion.
i'm gonna get the popcorn for this. Especially seeing as my latest video is glazing this episode

Hello. I think I understand why you feel that way, as some of my friends do too. However, I can tell you that I'm the type who wouldn't cry over a kid's cartoon (just kidding, I know it's anime, haha). But I cried like a bitch...
My dude, this is a masterpiece. You don't need to overthink it, just feel it. While there wasn't a lot of dialogue, the emotional moments were so powerful and real. In my opinion, you misunderstood the episode.
Fair enough, I respect your opinion.
Booooooooooooo

Great video! I dissagree with your opinion of the episode being overrated, but it's way better to voice an unpopular opinion than to be a sheep
Appreciate it. Ive also found out more information about the episode. They left out a lot from the manga that would have helped tie everything together
Man your just overthinking and there are only 7 episodes
No the series is great. Im just talking about 1 episode
people is easily sold when you hit their feelings, it is just like that
from a technical point of view, the episode was mid
why do you think it hit so many people?
@TheCasualBrian most people love their moms, and most moms have made many sacrifices.
I kinda thought i was the only one 😅. Before people start hating, DandaDan has literally in 7 eps made it in my top 20 of all time. It's sooo good. This episode had art... but there was just something missing about it
exactly. I have loved watching it but this one was off but apparently there are things they left out that really help understand whats happening
@@TheCasualBrian like you said, it just basically had no direction. It was just just mishmash of some probably pretty good ideas presented without a clear structure
Well this is just shit
why?
@@TheCasualBrianso many reasons look at your comments section, love the dedication too answering so many, but Dammm you gonna stay on your high Horse just because you have a problem with the episode. And right now nothing valid has come as a response
This man literally made a 12 minute long YT video on a 24 minute long anime episode just to be wrong. Last I checked my episode count was over 20,000 and I can say without doubt, this episode of DanDaDan was indeed a masterpiece. You're bringing up stuff like Naruto, Naruto literally had poorly written emotional moments that were forcefully spoon fed down your throat repetitively and just felt cringe. One Piece isn't a fair thing to compare the 7th episode of brand new anime to... And comparing to Fan Letter which wasn't created on a weekly schedule and was given movie level treatment for a 24 minute special with one the best anime directors ever and one of the best key animators in the industry storyboarding is just delusional. You are on some serious copium.
I am wrong?
@ Bro no wonder you don’t understand the episode or why it’s a masterpiece. You didn’t even bother to read the statement or you completely lack all comprehension and vocal intelligence, either way the writing would go right over your head.
@@TheCasualBrian Are you illiterate too? I think that statement is fairly clear. Sweet Jesus, no wonder this episode didn't register for you, comprehension issue.
@@TheCasualBrian Try basic reading comprehension and you'd know that is what I was saying... No wonder this episode went over your head.
Lmao, bro is trying to get attention..
by sharing an unpopular opinion lol
God... terrible take...
You clearly has a hard time understanding a pretty straight forward story of a mother put in a terrible situation to raise her daughter with the best she could give her, sacrificing her dignity and working to the bone so her daughter could be happy, only to see her daughter taken away by terrible people.
You are talking about something completely different. I also love when people disagree and so they say you dont understand

Nothing worse then someone trying to argue way something is “overrated” while also thinking it’s good
this makes no sense. Why cant I enjoy the series and even episode but point out a flaw
@ something being overhyped or overrated isn’t a flaw or criticism that the writing team can do anything about

?
😐
For me, the mother character is too reliant on the backstory. There's some light setup beforehand, but basically all the character work is left for the backstory and she is just an unengaging antagonist previously, with the very long backstory not having been earned.
Also I despise people's discussion about this ep in relation to show/tell and visual storytelling and whatnot. I feel like anime fans have never understood this concept well.
Ive found that they left stuff out that was in the manga. After I have done research I see what was happening
Spitting facts, good animation doesn't make up for lackluster storytelling
People just Follow the crowd
Thank you thought so too
Its extremely overrated
Definitely it's overrated.
agree
I honestly agree. I do think the way they visually storytold was amazing, but I was a bit hung up on some unanswered questions about the mother too. I think it just needed a bit more context to really connect to it. Love the episode tho, but I don’t think it’s a masterpiece.
its amazing how that simple statement is so controversial
