Cold Steel Recon Scout: A Wilderness Standard

- If someone tells you they're serious outdoorsman ask to see their knife collection. If they don't have a Cold Steel Recon Scout knife (or one like it filling the same role) be careful of the rest of their claims. They're armchair warriors. Fact is, at its price point, the CS Recon Scout performs extremely well in the wilderness in such tasks as emergency shelter making and firecraft. This is mostly due to its full flat ground 5/16" thick blade that acts like a wedge when wood splitting. It also hacks quite nicely as well. And I should know: I've used this particular Recon Scout hard in several wilderness outings and always came away impressed with its capabilities (see my other Recon Scout videos). Other features include: a recoil absorbing Kraton handle, a totally waterproof plasic sheath with QD capability, an unsharpened swedge bowie blade (also suitable for defensive use), a strong tip, and a 20 oz weight (reasonable for its capability). Downsides? Well this Carbon V version and its SK-5 follow-up steel will easily rust. But still these steels are durable, hold an edge well, sharpen easily, and won't chip in the dirt (like SanMai III). Also I have seen a Recon Scout break while batoning in very cold conditions...maybe the result of sharp 90º angles (non-rounded) at the hilt that induced stress. Still it's a great blade and this particular one has been proven in several snow campouts so I trust it. The Recon Scout and its even better larger brother the Trailmaster set the standard for wilderness blades. But the competition is catching up, even at this approx. $65 cost (SK5). Witness the Ontario SP5 and SP10, the RAT7, and the RTAK II. Nevertheless these Cold Steel survival blades will always be at the top of their game in the back country, holding their own.

Note: Sorry for the yellow color of the video...I was still learning my camera settings as I started out with these videos.
You wanna know what is REALLLLLLLY boring? Listening to internet experts with NO videos try to tell a guy who has over one thousand of them uploaded how to do things right. Man, does that get boring! -- Veri
Thanks for the suggestion nutnfancy. I got my CS Recon Scout last night. This knife is amazing. It splits wood better than you described and is actually a decent weight to be thrown, if done right. Thanks again.
because of your review i ordered this knife and just got it in the mail today, it is awesome. thank you nutn
Thanks NF! I was undecided on the Trailmaster and the Recon Scout. Your review was immensely helpful. I just got my Recon Scout in the mail today and I LOVE it! I'm taking this with me when I deploy next year. Keep up the great reviews!

I bought this knife per this review and a few others and have not been disappointed. This knife is wicked tough and razor sharp out of the box. I don't care how heavy a knife is (with some exception) as long as it performs and let's be honest, a good knife can be the difference between life and death if your far enough in the backcountry. There are a lot of high quality knives on the market but, for the price, this one is hard to beat. If you can only afford to buy one knife, buy this one!
Sir, don't get angry I'm your old subscriber and I really respect everythinng what you do. You are old school reviewer and I should take it easy.
Impressive detail and definitely more than I knew about it. Thanks.
Depends what's on the cutting menu that day: different missions and different blades. For wilderness wood working, the CS Recon wins.
I like how you're thinking... more ammo is always better. If wood splitting is on the menu though, the RS or one like it has to come along. Thanks.
Great video review nutnfancy! I love Cold Steel knives. The Recon Scout, as you stated, is a wilderness standard. It is priced so well. I have never experienced a problem with quality. The Recon Scout will stay in my collection and will be one of the knives that I pack. So many knives so little time.
The ax, small knife combo can work and I have used it. However it is limited as you will expending much energy in falling a tree with a small axe. Therefore for weight and calorie conservation I prefer a Recon-like knife and Sawvivor. I would be interested in seeing some multi-day backpacking videos of people using an axe for fire making.
highly recommended knife!!! high value but prices keep going up, along with all other knives and weaponry. pick one up NOW!!!
Obviously you really like this knife and view it as a standard piece of equipment. What I'm wondering is that do you generally find the length to be adequate or do you find yourself frequently wanting something a bit bigger like the RTAK II.
After watching some of Nutnfancy's video's I went looking for the recon scout. I found one at a gun show brand new and it just happened to be the last version made in the U.S.A. Paid 140$ but whatever it says made in the USA on it! Nutnfancy rocks!
Hello sir, thanks for the review. I'm thinking about buying a Cold Steel Recon Scout. However, I already have a LMF II Infantry from Gerber. Should I sell the LMF II in order to get the Recon Scout?
To make things clear, I'm no collector, instead, I'm a user. I've seen several bad reviews about the Gerber (handle breaks loose while battoning, handle isn't hard enough) and it makes me think. What is your opinion about this?
Hey nutn, what do u think of the new sk5 carbon version? im planning to buy that one do u think its good also or should i look for an other blade to use in the outdoors.
thanks for all the vids im close to seen them all love them!!
Right on dude, thanks
hey nutnfancy i go backpacking alot and i would like to know if you think the kabar olive drab or the sk5 recon scout is a better survival knife
Question: CS Recon Scout weights 15oz and CS Kukri machete weights 16oz. The machete seems to be a very good chopper and camp building tool. Since they weight almost same (which suprised hell outta me) Which one would you go for? The only factor i see is size...
The Cold Steel Recon Scout San Mai III. Until you actually hold it in your hand you will realize it's so beautiful, you cannot possibly use it. I had to order two.
Mr. Nutnfancy, great vids.my question is ,if you could have only one survival knife ,which one would it be?the Ka Bar?the Cold Steel Recon Scout? the Cold Steel SRK?the SOG M37-N Seal PUP Elite or some other brand,I know that you said on a Ka Bar vid that you are a big fan of Ka Bar and that you have used one in the out doors for 12 years,so which is the only one you would pick?if you could have only one.Thank You.
I still have my old, Carbon V (Camillus made) RS that came with the Cordura sheath. My dad had it for a long time and carried it while running barrel traps in the slough & around the island in the Mississippi River (AR side). He never had rust issues fortunately. It took me many years to finally talk him into trading it back to me. Just wish I'd hung on to my original USA made (Camillus again) Trail Master. I let a friend trade it out of me before I PCS'd out of Alaska. Always watching for one.,
Why is the Cold Steel Master Tanto always left out? Laminated blade, rubber handle, good weight. It'll baton wood, and still clean and skin a wild hog. Hold an edge forever since the core layer is high-corbon. Just my thoughts.
What's the difference between the SK-5 High Carbon vs the Carbon 5 version or is i the same?
you said you changed the grind on your knife...what type of grind do you prefer...how would i go about changing my grind if i choose...
Do you like your CSRS better? or your Ontario SP10?
Love this review. A good old Nutnfancy classic. Hey Nutn, when are you gonna take that new SK-5 version out and beat the crap out of it? I for one would like an in field review, a tiral by fire, so to speak. I think alot of us are wondering if it is as good as the Carbon V version.
Thank you. -- Veri
Btw, any words on the discontinued CS Bush Ranger? (Carbon V, USA, Camillus made yet again.) I picked up one from a friend NIB for small money. I've only seen high praise for it. It is light for its size but I've heard & seen vids to back it up, that the Bush Ranger is a great woods knife. If it really is then I might put it in the mix for kit. If it's so-so I'll just leave it NIB to keep it's value. Tnx.
nutnfancy, do you still have this knife - I'm asking because I still have mine and am wondering how the Carbon V has held up.
Stay tuned for my Fallkniven Wilderness knife review. It is a superb knife.
you don't need a huge knife for wilderness survival. 5'' blade is more than enough
i need help ...how do u sharpen them to get a good edge . See i live in england and all i see it the stones. But i dont want to make a mess of the blade i just was it a bit sharper and a better edge thanks ..and amazing vids
what sharpening system do you use in the feild?
Cool, thanks for that clarification. I was thinking it was 1095.
Any chance of reviewing the San Mai version? I live on an island surrounded by the ocean and wet tropical environment. I currently have the SRK in Aus-8 for bug out bag
what knife would hold its edge more than adequate and how expensive are they
I am a subscriber and I asked the above question and I have not yet received a answer on this question from Nutnfancy.what do you recommend?Which is a better blade
Does the recon scout have a convex grind from factory?
@olivelake Can you recommend a different cheaper choice?
It's not the first time i've heard about a cold steel knife snapping at the base. Maybe a bad batch of knives?
Has anyone used convex grind sharpening technique on this blade? Looking like a perfect candidate, how did it work for you?
Ok I'm totally new to "real" knives and I plan on getting this knife, what else do I need to get to service this knife? I'm not a country guy, will only be using this in a survival situation.
where do you find them offline ( or a cheaper site)
i actually use the small fallkniven F1, really better for carving, skinning, etc, wich is what i usually would do in the wild. The idea of a chopper knife is great but combines bad with the real needs. Even a normal folder knife + a small axe could be more practical and way cheaper.
what is your take on chris reeves knives? dont keep price in mind.
great review, looks like a good blade with a nice sheath
Where can I get one of these for a good price?
How does the original stack up to the San Mai 3?
$80?!?!? I just looked it up to order one...and all I saw were triple digit price numbers.....the cheapest being around $120... Could you send me the link where you found yours?
hey man, love ya videos. very helpful and informative. i would like to see some reviews on other knives used in hiking and full on camping. eg, for skinning, butchering and other smaller blades. ps, i am also a huge fan of large fixed blades for survival and defense. i might get some videos up of my blades soon but unfortunately i don't have the money to spend like you, so mine will be a cheaper option but still effective. thanks again and keep up the good work.
Yep a great Recon Scout.
why do these sell for 189 on the cold steel website but 115 on ebay?
what do you think of the esee rc 5
i just have 1 Q for you nutnfancy, how did you get that cool knife for 90 bucks???
I am trying to decide to get the recon scout or trail master.
Don't exactly agree. The bigger the knife, the better/quicker you can deal with larger tasks. A 5" blade can only baton through the center of a 3 1/2"-4" piece of wood. That means you either have to choose smaller pieces of wood or baton down the edge of a larger piece of wood. Either way, a larger blade can do more work and work faster in my opinion.
SOG Creed knife or CS Recon Scout?
@koky5150 Have you seen the 2010 Cold Steel catalog? Both the SK-5 and San Mai III versions are available. However, the SK-5 costs $150 and the San Mai III costs $300. I like the SK-5, though.
I was going to buy this buy can anyone explain the difference between 1080 and 1085. Almost every knife nutn reviews is in 1085, how does 1080 compare??? Thanks
Bendotwood, TNP talks about the size of survival blades and he does admit several times that a smaller blade will do a large percent of the job duties. However, he argues all the time that the bigger blades are GOOD weight. For example: When hacking through wood.
Don't know stock but I run a 20º on mine... watch my wilderness knife clinic videos to see the performance of it. Pretty wicked.
The only knife in enjoy over this one is a BK7, same stell(more less) but I found the grip more filling, and knowing I have a fultang over a partial fulltang is what sets these two knives apart for me,
cold steel recon scout or ontario rtak 2?
Hey nutn'? I just picked up this blade for around $90 bucks after serious review of your different videos of the knife. It was like Trail Master quality at SRK AUS8 price! I also have a Ka-Bar BK-9 as well. I'm a former Army JAGC from the School of Hard Knox! Thank you for your service! I would've liked to seen a fullbird on them shoulders! Whoyah, right? I am severely service-connected and you have trained me to be more self-reliant, confident and squared away! I hope Ally's fine? C u @ the top
GREAT KNIFE
hey what do you do for your job?
Is the recon scout full tang?
I just picked on up and $90 was the best price i could find and it's SK5 steel.
I have (2) Recon Scout's, both are in the CarbonV, one I use, the other one is virgin, it use to be my big 7" go to knife, abd I still like it, but it was replaced by my Rodent 7, I use both, but I like my Swamp Rat better.
got one cuz of the review.. love it
Thanks nutnfancy, I just ordered this knife.
Also I find that a Saber Grind baton's better than a Full Flat because of the relief edge ? ,,, ,,, ,,,
depends on what you use it for. stainless is better in wet or humid climate and if you are lazy and don't want to oil ya blades.
ps, stainless blades will rust if not looked after. i still oil mine. but yes i do prefer the harder steel's.
does any one have any thoughts on 420 surgical stainless steel? is it any good?
@olivelake Sorry, but as a CQB instructor, I have beta tested samples from just about every knife company on the planet. I can say without reservation that Cold Steel makes the greatest cutting implements in the world. No other company even comes close. As for the price, all I can say is that a knife is a tool. Primarily, it is a tool to keep you alive in less than ideal situations. You can pay less, but you WILL get less. How much is your life worth?
i think it only costs around $80, which is not a bad price considering how much use u can get out of it
Hello again mr. nutnfancey , still love you reviews and tests, and still wnna see a review on the Meyerco MaxxQ assited opener,G-10 handle Aus8 blade , (It's the BEST EDC I've ever used) But I would like to see you do some reviews and hear your thoughts on the best HUNTING KNIVES, i.e for gutting deer, splitting briskets ,skinning and all other hunting tasks, which In my opion calls for 3 different blades, 1 survival type(fires), 1 hunting knife and 1 EDC knife cutting food preparing meals etc.
See my review videos on these. Great knives.
why would it hurt the back?
Why would you need a combat knife? Do you really think you need it?
what website should i go to
@menter555 probably because he doesnt have much experience with them. Once you get used to the angled tip, you will see that they are very versitile.
cool my cold steel recon scout comes tommarow
try to get a Yarara Comando knife, it's argentinian made, and in my opinion is even better than any cold steel knife, and still affordable (80-90 bucks).
It is actually similar to 1095 but with chromium and vanadium added. Case calls it CV. It isn't the same..
Ha haa,I just watched the vid of your buddy's knife that broke.
My only comment is- Why would a good ole American company choose to make their best knives in China. want to know why it broke? China
Had an American made Recon Scout, bought some lumber and used it to cut some rope and left it lying on the back of the truck, drove off and pulled into the driveway just as I realized what happened. Well it was gone and I was pretty upset.
I now have an 11" custom by Takach Forge.
Great review,thanks.
Recently bought this knife for $111 shipped from knife outlet.com for anybody interested. I don't know that this is the best price, but it's one of the better prices I found from a company I've used several times with no BS. The sheath has been upgraded to plastic since this video.
someone tell me if the sk-5 steel is better than the aus 8 steel plz???????????????
@antagonist42 The Hissatsu is better for combat, the Master Tanto is about a quarter inch thick, laminated, and is full tang. I have to have a blade that is good for both, I dont go backpacking, I do Search and Recue/Fugitive apprehention in my area. My field knife better be good at both. You cant out-perform the Master Tanto with any of the "Monster" knives Nutn shows. Its a tank. Ive been everywhere from Post-Katrina N.O. to the E. Tx woods with mine. 15 yrs and still cutting through it all.
PoppyCock. When your out in the woods, wether in survival mode or just enjoying the solitude whats the need to buggy-lug this large knife. Splitting wood? That would be a waist of a good edge! Hell, one can easily create a hot fire without splitting wood. Might make a functional tool though for cutting bone ligaments and/or butchering large game and if your careful, small game.
this is the German Shepherd of knives..
Btw, the "k" in Fallkniven is not silent.
@fappometer14 WTH knife are you talking about?
@bluenoserr being a canadian as well spending time in the bush i just use a granfors bruks small forest axe. that with a leatherman wave and the sawvivor and im good to go. a lil more weight to carry but i dont mind for the added security and insurance.
You can buy a brand new SK-5 Recon Scout for just over a 100 bucks on Ebay.
There is NO other knife that perfoms as well anywhere in that price range. Period.
San Mai III version start just over 200 bucks. There's no point quoting msrp, it's just misleading.
Cold Steel has excellent price/performance, in almost all of their range. Compare them to their closest competitors and name me a better deal.
Check noss4 for various Cold Steel knives tested. Incredible performance given their price.
you must have looked at the san mai III version.....product #37S it is the more expensive 300 dollar version with the raw steel finish
check out #39LRS....it is 90 dollars. and with a black finish black.
Sadly, the price of this knife has almost tripled since this review. Money-wise, I think there are better choices now. Love mine, though.
a knife like THAT is not gonna rust at all
i thought the new version was made of SK-5 steel
I am an outdoorsman and my KA-BAR knife does all it needs to do.
