All of McFarlane's figures seem to have skipped leg day. Just bizarre engineering. Was never planning to pick up these animated ones anyway. It seems the thinking is, "Why don't I put my own spin on it so you know it's mine?" No, people want accuracy if it is based on something. I really hope McFarlane makes figures based off of his own actual artwork when he drew Superman and Batman.
It's weird how inaccurate that Batman is. The belt is wrong, the logo is too big, even the grappling hook is wrong (It's supposed to be a claw not a spear) When you compare it to the Dc Collectibles version the difference is night and day. It's also weird how the Harley Quin is technically billed as a comic book version, but the design (especially the face) is closer to TAS. After hearing interviews at Toy Fare it seems most of the issues people have will be addressed in future waves. Lets just hope they come sooner than later.

Good video Brad. Yeah I don’t know why McFarlane made the decisions he made for the Animated DC figures. Batman resembles more the later “New Adventures” look instead of the classic Animated series look, yet he’s painted after the latter. And Superman does have a mini mullet. I’d love to see Comic versions of the Earth Green Lanterns( Hal, John, Guy, Kyle, Jess and Simon) and for them to use the green they used for this John figure. Those are my two cents anyways. Still good review.

The Batman figure is alright but it's more of a statue than a fig. The blue lining on the cape really makes it look nice. I came here to see how that and the Superman scaled to each other. Thanks for all of the details covered.
I've got the Superman and Batman figures - I really like them. I like the arm articulation, and much prefer how the legs are articulated than on the vast majority of DC figures, with their weird T-Cut groin-sections. The face paint on my Superman is good, and there's none of the sloppy painwork as seen on your Batman's utility belt - it may be you've got a couple of bad examples. Or, I struck really lucky. Still, they loook great on my shelf, and that's what matters. Where did you get the Superman and Green Lantern-logo flight stands, though?
I love the animated Superman. Not a fan of the other two, but I do own them. I would like to see more animated from McFarlane, just hopefully a better job done on them. Also, Walmart here in Newfoundland only charges $24.97 for them, not sure if the rest of Canadian Walmart's charge the same

I'm assuming production and distribution has slowed down a fair bit due to recent circumstances with Chinese production and Covid 19. I know spinmaster said they will definitely take a big hit due to the virus, so I'd assume the same goes for McFarlane
If these "animated" versions resembled the reference photos that are on the cards and packaging they came with, I would have not hesitated! But...they are odd caricatures of that animated style. Could not agree more Brad - this was a fair review. Long, LONG time McFarlane fan since before Image, and lifelong DC fan...a Mattel fan since I was literally 4 years old (go He-Man!). The DC line has been something that was bittersweet to see Mattel lose, but I was excited to see something new, I have an amazing DC line thanks to Mattels work, but knew Todd was going to try a different direction. Hell-Bat, Manga Supes, BatGirl (getting past the version - the execution on their choice was really well done) and Supes I have to say are very strong figures, though the comic Supes has some "Dad bod" leg issues going on. Batman (comic edition), the more time I look at it, the more it sits next to the DC Essentials bats, the more that head size and look seem way, way off in scale and style to the body. The are releasing a blue alternate to that one, I hope they adjust the head as its gained a lot of feedback - but I doubt they will do to the costs associated. The best way we can vote is with our wallets, where as I would try to score the whole BAF lines that I could with Mattel - eventually I stopped when the quality was not justifying the investment (in some waves). This is a new example with the DC license where I am just not going to buy them because they exist, stuff is just too expensive to reward bad decision making and mediocrity.
I know they are not perfect but they have a great charm for me. I only have Superman and Batman. Superman really stands out on my shelf and I love it for that. Definitely not a £20 figure but I got them for £9.99 each from smyths when they came out, and for that I think it's really worth it. Definitely agree on batmans eyes tho.

I definitely find the reactions to these specific animated McFarland figures super interesting and surprising. I absolutely love them! They aren’t as accurate as dc collectibles and those are my favorites due to being my favorite interpretations of the figures. However I do think McFarland did a great job of the likeness of the characters and making it more of an action figure if you know what I mean. I’m like the accessories too 😁. But I can see/hear the complainants from different videos and tbh just not a problem for me at all.
Agree. On the show, Stewart was always shown to be half-a-head shorter than Batman and Superman plus the box call-out says he's from Justice League when his shaved head says Justice League Unlimited (that also begs to ask why no second head for the other look?).

I'm buying Superman, I guess this is the closest thing ever based on that look. John is passed, cuz I can't pass through that butterfly joints. Batman got wrong colors, it's not TAS Batman, so no. But I'm hyped of the idea of different 7" dc characters, so I'm looking forward of animated line

It's been 3 years since this review and this line has been a complete dud. Very accurate video of all the flaws this figures suffer from, both likeness and articulation-wise. I just can't get over how skinny their legs are. Hopefully (but I doubt it), Todd tries again from scratch with a JLU line. It's either that or I'll just keep grabbing the super powers line.
I got the Superman today. Once you get it, it's not so bad, I like it, but it definitely could be better. I would trade it in for one of those DC Collectibles animated Superman easily. Those are perfectly on model for the Bruce Timm style. My biggest gripe with the animated McFarlanes is that they don't actually represent any DCAU art style. They don't look like Batman the Animated Series, nor like Superman TAS, nor like the Justice League or JLU style. They're their own style, feels like an off-brand approximation to the art style of Bruce Timm but not quite there.
Yeah the DC collectibles ones are way better, but if someone missed out on those figures than i guess the McFarlane figures will do, at walmart and toys r us they are less expensive than at eb games!!??...but 40$ on ebay for all 3, thats a good deal!
I agree with you that’s why I did’ t pick them up. I think they could have done better on Batman and the paint job on John’s shoulder did not look right. Does Todd approve these looks before they set to production. If so he needs to give more information on the looks.

I like drop hinges better than Todd Mcfarlane's usually set up. This Batman is huge though. I already have Nightwing. So I usually pose him with Nightwing and my playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures.

Quality control on these figures including dc essentials is so shoddy. I’m really thinking of dropping all low end figures and only continuing with mezco/mafex etc. I recently received my knightfall and rebirth Batman from the essentials line and they are full of qc issues. These things cost about 40$ which I think is way too high to look like it was painted by Hellen Keller.
batmans articulation could have been fixed with..... A CLOTH CAPE, seriously these rubbery/plasticy capes that stop articulation are annoying i wish they would just put cloth capes on figures like these

Is there a licensing problem? This Batman figure has never appeared in any animation. Why is it so glossed over in almost every review? The Kenner/Hasbro/Mattel lines were more accurate.
I like mine so much better than the DC Collectibles versions. They have better articulation, better paint apps and aren't nearly as fragile. I hope that most of the issues with this first wave are because they were rushed to market. I think we'll start seeing improvements in the next few waves based on interviews I've seen with Tye Butler from McFarlane toys at NYTF. 🤞🤞🤞
Since so many people here are whinging about the colors on Batman in the comments, here is my take on it. I like it a lot. Its something different. Why does it HAVE to be in the JLU costume? Just imagine that Batman had a Throwback day and wore his old suit during Justice League. Simple. It honestly is a better looking suit, with the better looking artstyle. So the best of both worlds. When we were kids we didnt care about accuracy. We would buy the white camo Arctic Batman, or the Yellow Swamp Batman or whatever, and we loved them. Why do we have to be so particular about a cool looking figure the older we get?

We here in EBgames they are 26.99 and I still have yet to find them at my Walmart.

I skipped these but I picked up a few Hellbats and Superman Unchained. They are the two best figures from McFarland by far.
I liked those and most of the comic versions. Just not Batman. I had to work on him to get him where I was pleased with him.
I got mine and the legs are So loose. I’m gonna stick to DC collectibles (dc direct). Soz Todd.

You can use TAS Superman's closed fists for Acton comic 1000 Superman. They are a bit big but it can go unnoticed

I got the Superman a few weeks after it came out. I just got Batman & John Stewart last night.

The Batman figure is from the New adventures painted as he appears in the animated series. That why it looks so weird.

The colors on Batman are to vibrant they need to be muted more.

Not really. Far from trash. I did skip out on these but I have bought 6 out of 13 from wave 1. All great, none are perfect.
