DarthCipient Late reply, but me too! Shyamalan's hubris aside (casting himself as the writer that saves the future... really?) It took me back to feeling like a little child, when everything is fascinating. Also, the music is fantastic. I may be among few others, but I think this is one of his best movies.
+Matt Greer I don't really appreciate that he cast himself as one of the primary characters. But I don't mind the other minor cameos he did. They were totally fine. Remember the Hobbit movies? Guess who the first person to show up on screen in Desolation of Smaug? Peter Jackson himself. That was cool.
Didn't you love how Reggie was the guardian and all he was doing was coming outside to get a sandwich? Sometimes your destiny chooses you rather than you choosing your destiny.
I know right? The main guy thought he might be the guardian, then he wasn't, so they didn't know who was the guardian, and then.."Oh my G..he's the guardian. Reggie! Reggie Reggie! Just keep looking in his eyes!" And the thing of it is, my first time watching this movie I watched it with my best friend who told me before we started, for me to pay attention to every little thing. And the ONE thing that slipped me, was Reggies name. So I wasn't sure who he was talking about at first until the camera went to him XP XD
Most underrated Shyamalan film. I’ll never understand that pushback it has received. It’s a fairytale and it must be approached as such. The music is epic and truly elevated the film.
Well, even respecting the wide variety of opinions, this is a rare case of a poorly made movie (it has its highs and its very low lows) that really had something great underneath, something really intense and true, and that is why I guess it has managed to reach the following that it has. How much I would have loved to see it done well. The scene "Thank you for saving my life" always makes me fantasize that it belonged to that hypothetical movie that could have made justice to its story.
A big reason is people don't get that it was written to be like a children's bedtime story. That's why the characters are so personified and react the way they do to everything going on.
You have to be connected to old fairytale/adventure stories when you were a kid..... if you watch it with an adult eye..... theres too much cynicism and adult miserableness to enjoy it.
I'm not going to lie. I cried when he said "thank you for saving my life". He had to say goodbye to her. And she had to say goodbye to him. It really is a sad and emotional scene and the music is absolutely stunning
Yes! Such a touching moment to a great movie. She came into their lives to actually save them. And him especially, a man filled with love and such, doing his best to keep that up despite what he went through. He needed what she did for him.
The ending to this movie was absolutely perfect. The way he has the underwater shot when the eagle thing comes in is brilliant and the music in the final moments just gives me goosebumps. Say what you will about the rest of this film or his other movies for that matter, but this scene is film making at its best.
2:39. I fucking love this shot so much. The fact that Reggie has been in the movie the whole time working out one half of his body just for this one shot where he looks like a noble warrior in the rain holding a spear.
agreed! Don't forget Reggie was always hanging in the stairway until Mr. Heep yells at him to stop that ("someone could fall"); where does Story go when she needs help after being attacked...the stairway! Reggie would have been there if not for being told to stop being there.
I don't get how ppl didn't like this movie, it was amazing, like ppl from an apartment building who think they are nothing become involved in man ability to make themselves more then what they believe or thought to be true and its about just ordinary ppl who through whatever comes find out they are capable of so much more in this life and can do good with the knowledge that they know and it is a choice to do good or evil, like it is a master piece on the human condition failure yet over coming your fears like this is one of shammolns best films ever!!!!!
Love this movie so much. Many people were so turned off by The Village (I'm not one of them) that this one never really had a chance. I saw Lady In the Water in the theater and I remember people cheering when Reggie was revealed as the guardian. That was an awesome moment. The sound of the giant Eagle gives me chills. Just a great story all around.
This was one of the reasons why I enjoyed this movie. It kinda makes you feel that there is always hope no matter how bad things seem to get. This is a good example of it. When I saw it, I kinda felt like it was symbolic, that there is always some wonder out there in the world no matter what. That's why they killed off the critic for claiming there was no originality left in the world, he was dead wrong.
I have always loved this movie. It wasn’t about saving her life- it was about saving HIS life. There is a wonderful book about the development and filming of this movie
I notice, when Shyamalan does films that are deep and you have to take a second to think about it. Major audiences hate it. But when their more literal. They're amazing lol. People are dumb.
I remember that this was one of the first movies I ever purchased with my own pocket money and it was because I loved the cover art on the DVD case. That being said even though it was nothing like I imagined it'd be, its remained one of my absolute favourite movies for the last 11 years :)
One of the things I love about this scene is that Cleveland knows he’s not the guardian and yet he still stares into the scrunt’s eyes, maybe thinking he can distract it long enough for Story to be picked up by the Eatlon, even if it means his death.
I love this movie so much. I've seen it more times than I can count. I can understand why people don't like it, but it just gets me so emotional. It's one of those movies that you just have to go with.
Whoever decided to "place the camera" under the water is a fucking genius! Keeping the mystery of the hole story. Unlike most movies now days when they give away everything. Amazing scene from an amazing movie.

An "actual man" don't have any kind trouble to express his feelings. Only really insecure people would try to hide himself because other people's vision of him are too scary to deal with. If her boyfriend was able to share a emotional connection with her that means he is a really good boyfriend for her.

I just love the music when Giamatti realises that Reggie is the Guardian...really lifts me up and just brings hope to my heart. This is one amazing movie, making you feel the need to believe in something that's bigger then us and that we can't proove, but we all know is there sumhow (whatever force/God/aliens are out there). James Newton Howard really delivers with this soundtrack!
I feel awe every time I watch that last bit-- where everyone is looking upward with such a sense of wonder, realizing that they have taken part of something miraculous. So well done.
I remember I was in a very dark place when I first picked up this movie from Blockbuster. I was basically an untreated basket case of depression and severe anxiety. In the years since, from the help of therapy and medication, I have been able to live a normal, successful life. The reason I'm telling you all of this, is because this was the first movie that made me feel like everyone on this Earth has a purpose. It made me feel like maybe even I had a purpose, and for that reason alone it will always be one of my favorite movies of all time. In a weird sort of way, Story came to my rescue when I needed it the most. If you're reading this and you're struggling with the same things I used to, you need to understand that there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is always a way out of the darkness.

I wish I could say that I didn't see it coming! I saw this for the first time last week. Once I realized that everyone in the movie was going to play a role in getting Story home, I figured Reggie would end up being the Guardian. When they showed him walking around at the beginning of the party it cemented it. This epic scene should have been the first time we see Reggie since the very beginning. That's my only complaint, I love this movie.
I had a very vivid dream when I watched it before and it seemed like a prophetic vision. The very reason why I came back to this movie is because of that. This movie stirs a great feeling out of me like I am bound to be great. I hope that greatness would affect people in the most positive way and may it bring forth people to move and action to better this world. To God be all the Glory! Thank you.
This scene really fills me with emotion, suspense and intrigue. When Cleaveland turns in the rain to face the Scrunt and realises Reggie is the guardian. Oh wow. With the eagle arriving so much emotion all the time. Really chokes me Story gets to go home at last. Love Paul Giamatti so much 💕💕😘

This movie received harsh criticism and backlash. More than it merited. It’s a great story with a great soundtrack. I kept wanting more and the final scene is a perfect climax. Kudos to James Howard Newton for the great accompanying score.
Honestly, I thought this movie was so much better than the Village and The Happening or After Earth. I thought it was very creative and that M. Night Shyamalan did his best for this movie. Here's hoping The Visit will work out for him.
JustLouIt Same here. I think he's just been on a rocky start over the past several years its been hard on him to figure out what to do, especially after thinking he could do a good job making The Last Airbender.
+David Langheier I actually thought The Last Airbender was ok. But then again I never watched the cartoon. Everyone I talked to that had watched the cartoon said the movie stunk and left out important plot points. Maybe I should try it out.
JustLouIt That's the same thing with me, thou I never saw the movie or the series at the time until last year when I watched the whole series and loved it. But I knew the Last Airbender wasn't going to do so well not because of how it fails to follow the show but the way how me made it with the acting, casting, and sets. You can see from the reviews what people's responses are to them.
I remember having a vivid and unforgettable dream as a kid of me and Story riding on the Great Eatlon away to freedom. We rode over the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Memphis, Detroit etc. People looked up at us as we flew over the city, many of them waving to us. Story and I landed on an uncharted location, to me, it was like the Bahamas, only it had a blue like tint to it. We got off the Eatlon and we lived there in her world, the blue world. Then I woke up. In tears 😭😭😭😢 I was upset it wasn't a real occurrence. But the dream always comes back And I'm no Longer sad.
I loved this movie and The Village. I felt like people where just on the Shyamalan hate train for no real good reason. All his movies were beautiful w/ the exception of Avatar and the Happening.
Looking back on this movie, I really appreciate it more than I did before. I love how it's set in modern day. I also like how all of his movies take place in Philadelphia. Save for after earth and air bender.
I just finished watching it this very moment and am compelled to write a comment here in youtube since it really is a beautiful movie. I actually remembered this movie several days ago now I found it and watched it again...so beautiful for me I would have to say.
seres humanos....."corrientes"....que juntos logran algo grande..... esa Parte Divina❤....que tenemos los humanos..... por eso el mundo sigue guirando..... musica...escena...."mensaje".... MARAVILLOSA💕
It's fantastic the way people answer about things... they don't argue about the ideas or something like this... just write down a personal offense! My best wishes for you all in 2009! And I really hope that the Cinema Industry release good films... for you, like this, for me, like others!
I also don't care at all what critics or in general those who hated it thought of it. I think "Lady in the Water" was a good movie. One thing notable about most of M Night S's movies is the music, the soundtrack, the score. James Newton Howard has composed some absolutely beautiful, memorable stuff to accompany this guy's films. This one to me is the most memorable besides "Unbreakable." The last 5 minutes of the movie was just unforgettable. Very powerful ending. I was blown away and still am.
This movie is the perfect example of how critics don't enjoy movies. As a fairytale, i loved it. I felt like I was part of the story. Like I was listening a bedtime story when I was a children.
Reggie being The Guardian may not really affect the plot, but I still think it's a cool twist because of how meta it is. After all, why does it even feel like a twist? Because we think we know how stories work. Cleveland is the main character, so he's gotta be the most special one, right? But that's not a law of nature. Other things are possible. Harry was wrong. There is originality in the world.
I loved how at the start of the film, Cleveland said that reggie always wanted to be special, hence the bicep thing. Then at the end of the movie reggie turned out to be really special being the guardian. This movie was awesome. I loved how it's about everyone having a purpose. I'm not an M. Night fan but stop hating on every movie he did. Avatar isn't the only movie he did, he made a few brilliant ones. :)
I won't ignore the obvious points this movie is hated on for, but you just don't see people trying to make many 'modern' fairy tales much. We need more people trying to take a crack at this and understand they'll be criticized a lot, because fairy tales ARe very weird.O_O The whole point about 'omg how does everyone know about narfs' is easy to explain- this isn't our earth, it's the earth in this story. Ever notice in fairy tales that the local inhabitence always know about the legends, lore or backstory to support the rest of the tale? It's the same gimmick here- in THIS world, they all know what Narfs are. Like how people in story books know about dragons, or wizards, or certain rules with how to deal with fairies when the protagonist comes looking for answers. It's just the setting that keep jarring people, it's modern times instead of ancient/fantasy. But keep in mind, back in the day, THEY were US as the audience. Some person listening to their grandmother talk around the campfire would be wrinkling thier eye brows going- "pffft how come everyone knows how to deal with the witch? this is modern day- we have wheels and cannons now!"
As part of this world we live in, this universe, do we have a pre-defined role to play? Is our existence not merely an accident but in actuality, part of a series of events in which we, all of us, have conduct that defines the next step? Lady In The Water attempts to answer this question in a loving and dramatic way. As an atheist, I don't necessarily believe in the stated philosophy. But M. Night Shyamalan's interpretation of "fate" moved me to an unbelievably deep degree. Just the idea of ANY individual, no matter how plain or boring they may be, having a "role to play" in the scheme of things is an incredibly profound statement. I LOVE this movie so much for that reason. No matter how depressed you feel, as insignificant you feel you are, as totally not relevant you feel to the world around you, there is a role you must play. As the movie infers, it is upon YOU to keep going and fulfil that role. Not knowing what that role is maybe immaterial.
I love this movie and especially this last scene The people are challenged with understanding their purpose in life and some like Reggie find it (accidentally) The lady heals all but isn’t from our world so she’s called back. I cry when I watch this scene because of so many things. The filming is beyond excellent and M Night is a genius of mood creation IMO. Also because I think that my beloved wife is gifted from another place and will return by Eatlon method and I will be sad but healed by her This movie works because it tackles things beyond our world that we can’t fully understand
i took it as meanin that no matter how insignificant we all might think we are, we are all a part of something that we might not even know of, and that each of us has a role to play in life and that we are right where were supposed to be. stop trying so hard to fit in or find your place but to just stop and listen and let the world show you what ur purpose is. it is a fairy tale, so its supposed to be kinda far fetched but it has very real human tones in it. I thought it was a magical movie
This movie was amazing! One of my favourite movies ever! I don't really get why people hate this movie.. It's just like "The Cookbook". People will love it, and it will be a great inspiration. And other people will hate that book, just like the movie... I can't wait to see M. Night's newest film!
this scene was awesome, i loved it and the scene where she tells him of the boy who would read his book and the writers fate was absolutely beutiful. great job sham..
I don't know you, but Reggie being the guardian was the biggest plot twist in the movie for me, I would have never thought he'd be that important, omg, I love it
Don't forget Reggie was always hanging in the stairway until Mr. Heep yells at him to stop that ("someone could fall"); where does Story go when she needs help after being attacked earlier in the move...the stairway! Reggie would have been there if not for being told to stop being there.
The people who dislike and criticize this film are critical in general and lack the ability to be absorbed in a film that isn't a shallow and action-filled Michael Bay production. There is immense depth and subtlety in this film. It s parallel to great heroism in past and fantastic times writ on our modern stage.
+StsFiveOneLima Those are true words said there. People just don't get it really. They ask or complain for something to be original and then they just bitch about how bad it is.
David Langheier Oh of course. I can't fault him for trying to make his own fairytail come to life in this movie, but the actual implementation wasn't very good.
TheAngrySlug I guess you do have a point there. It's why I watched Chris Stuckmann's review on the movie to understand a better feeling for it. Still maybe I need to watch the movie again to truly understand.
The decision to place the "camera" under water when the great eathlon arrives and blur the way it's taking Story away, is pure perfection. 👌
I don't care what any film critic says or thinks.
This is a massively underrated movie. I loved it.

This is one of the more heartwarming Shyamalan movies. It has a swan lake/little mermaid fairytale feel to it.
Didn't you love how Reggie was the guardian and all he was doing was coming outside to get a sandwich? Sometimes your destiny chooses you rather than you choosing your destiny.
Why was he going outside in the rain for a sandwich?
he said "fuck it! I'm not gonna waste the snacks to this rain!
Reggie has one buff arm and one normal arm. This a regular day for him
They were really good sandwiches

Don't forget Reggie was always hanging in the stairway until Mr. Heep yells at him to stop that ("someone could fall"); where does Story go when she needs help after being attacked earlier in the move...the stairway! Reggie would have been there if not for being told to stop being there.
This movie received harsh criticism and backlash. More than it merited. It’s a great story with a great soundtrack. I kept wanting more and the final scene is a perfect climax. Kudos to James Howard Newton for the great accompanying score.
This movie makes me want to believe there is something magical out there
2023 and the healing scene still gets me in tears
Honestly, I thought this movie was so much better than the Village and The Happening or After Earth. I thought it was very creative and that M. Night Shyamalan did his best for this movie. Here's hoping The Visit will work out for him.
+David Langheier I agree. I really liked this one and Signs.
It did, now I’m waiting for Old
Loved the grass wolf so freaking cool.
+Dane Whitman hey thats beautiful... i believe that is a good omen for ya
+Jose Manosalvas ridiculous.
TThis is an AMAZZING MOVIE!! 10/10
This was a great movie. I always thought the ending was sad. Because it was the last time they would see each other.
This would make a great book.
rannierunsfast there is a book, ironically
Is called the man who hear noises
A joke book
Thank you...for saving my life
I just finished watching it this very moment and am compelled to write a comment here in youtube since it really is a beautiful movie.

MARAVILLOSA💕
The fact they didn't show the great eathlon was an amazing decision. Leaves so much for your imagination.
Great movie!
"Thank you for saving my life" 😢 Because, he may have saved her physically, but she saved him spiritually =)
It's fantastic the way people answer about things... they don't argue about the ideas or something like this... just write down a personal offense! My best wishes for you all in 2009! And I really hope that the Cinema Industry release good films... for you, like this, for me, like others!
This movie can only be fully appreciated when viewed with eyes toward life, experience and spirit. Thank you for this masterpiece.
I love this film ❤️
I also don't care at all what critics or in general those who hated it thought of it. I think "Lady in the Water" was a good movie. One thing notable about most of M Night S's movies is the music, the soundtrack, the score. James Newton Howard has composed some absolutely beautiful, memorable stuff to accompany this guy's films. This one to me is the most memorable besides "Unbreakable." The last 5 minutes of the movie was just unforgettable. Very powerful ending. I was blown away and still am.
Anyone who hates M. Night Shyamalan's work, obviously doesn't know what talent is. He is such a beautiful writer and amazing director.
i always cry when i see this movie. its amazing and very heart touching. we all have a purpose here and that is the moral of this story.
I like to think that, even for a second, the Eatlon had Cleveland under it's wings as well.
the music is the one redeeming feature to this film.
Bobby Ge Agreed.
And it was good
This movie is the perfect example of how critics don't enjoy movies. As a fairytale, i loved it. I felt like I was part of the story. Like I was listening a bedtime story when I was a children.
1:24 is so awesome. it's like he's facing his destiny.
totally agree, the scenes you have mentioned have been such pivotal, and powerful points of the film.
THIS SCENE ,MAKES ME CRY STILL EVERYTIME.
BECAUSE SOME ARE MENT TO KNOW OR SEE WHAT OTHERS DO .. I FOUND IT WONDERFUL...MANY LESSONSIN IT.
This and the Big Fish ending ALWAYS get me. 44 year old man here lol
Wonderful film, nothing else to say !
beautifull soundtrack =)
I love this movie it’s a great suspenseful fairytale of courage and friendship and destroying evil not many movies like this nowadays sadly
Watch this:
Hurumph…….pfffft …. 💩.. PLOP!
Why can't neat shit like this happen at my apt. complex? PS Love the whole eagle scene, just wish you could see the bird better when it picks her up.
LOL
Was more emotional the way it was
I think the point is that us who aren't of that world aren't permitted to see it, since the other creatures are shown clearly.
U want a human eating grass wolf st ur apartment
Loved this movie👏👏👏
all Shyamalan's movies are great!this man is amazing director!
I love this movie and especially this last scene
The people are challenged with understanding their purpose in life and some like Reggie find it (accidentally)
The lady heals all but isn’t from our world so she’s called back.
I cry when I watch this scene because of so many things. The filming is beyond excellent and M Night is a genius of mood creation IMO. Also because I think that my beloved wife is gifted from another place and will return by Eatlon method and I will be sad but healed by her
This movie works because it tackles things beyond our world that we can’t fully understand
i took it as meanin that no matter how insignificant we all might think we are, we are all a part of something that we might not even know of, and that each of us has a role to play in life and that we are right where were supposed to be. stop trying so hard to fit in or find your place but to just stop and listen and let the world show you what ur purpose is. it is a fairy tale, so its supposed to be kinda far fetched but it has very real human tones in it. I thought it was a magical movie
I like the music from 3:51 on..
This movie was amazing!
One of my favourite movies ever!
I don't really get why people hate this movie.. It's just like "The Cookbook". People will love it, and it will be a great inspiration. And other people will hate that book, just like the movie... I can't wait to see M. Night's newest film!
Unique poignancy n power. This movie is fantastic.
I always get chills when he says "reggie keep looking into his eyes"!
this scene was awesome, i loved it and the scene where she tells him of the boy who would read his book and the writers fate was absolutely beutiful. great job sham..
I absolutely love this movie💜💜💜 and The shape of water 💜💜💜
This would have made a fun comic book
Fun fact: The woman is also the lady from The Help movie and the Jurassic World movies if anyone didn't notice
The movie is so weird that its fantastic
wow. 3:50-4:25. is one of my favourite movie moments. Every single shot is perfect. The music is amazing. It's just incredible!
+StsFiveOneLima I, as a fan of film can say without a doubt this is one of Shamalan's weakest movies.
TheAngrySlug I'd say his weakest movie has to be the Last Airbender, we can all agree that one was the worst.
I cried so much in the end and felt so melancholy yet full of joy at the same time - the soundtrack made this movie
I think this movie deserves a remake. It has great ideas, it could have its flaws fixed.
