    It sucks that MAME still can't emulate Primal Rage properly due to the copy protection scheme that the developers used. Hopefully somebody who owns the Arcade version's hardware can disassemble and identify any of the hardware chips that contains the encryption measures.

    Yep, I recall this one had its moment, albeit briefly, in the Mortal Kombat era. I only ever saw this one in the arcades though, as no one I knew owned a home console version of it. It was definitely an eye-catcher with its graphics, characters, and relatively unique concept for a fighting game.

    Retro Gamer did quite a nice four page article on the making of the original Atari coin-op way back in 2010 for issue 83. Apparently the development team went to a LOT of effort to get those dinosaur characters animated nicely!

      Not really it's missing lots of animation frames, the biggest appeal in this game is the stop motion animation, how fluent it looks in the arcade

    This game was the point where I knew that Atari were spent as a creative force. Their output was previously characterised by being highly distinctive and often very original. They didn't just follow trends and make clones or variants of other people's games. 720º, Paperboy, APB and many, many more stood out as different in a crowd of me too arcade games .
    Enter Primal Rage, very much a follower rather than a leader. The tech was impressive for it's time but it really had nothing else going for it in the long run unless giant monsters really do it for you.

      But Atari was making digitized fighting games BEFORE Streetfighter 2 and Mortal Kombat?
      The real sin of Primal Rage was that it was nearly unplayable, and no fun to control. Atari innovated in the last place anyone wanted them to, purely for the sake of being different.

    Given how good NBA Jam TE and Mortal Kombat II look on the 32x, it's kind of shocking how bad Primal Rage looks on it.

  • @SomeOrangeCat
    @SomeOrangeCat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Primal Rage never really grabbed me. I liked the stop motion monsters, but that's about it. Not surprised that MS-DOS got a decent port though. This was during the early-to-mid 90s turning point where IBM-PC clones really started to catch up to, and sometimes exceed, what consoles could do. Its like once DooM came out, the PC became a serious contender.

    One of those games I've always had a fondness for despite it not actually being any good. And for those who don't know, the arcade version is notoriously difficult to emulate due to an absurd amount of anti-piracy measures in the code, hence the glitches.

    You’re going to laugh but until the last few years or so, I basically thought that all ports in the same system cycle were basically the same. I mean I realized some were better but figured if you had the PS2 version you didn’t need the Xbox and if that was near perfect why would I want the ps3. I still find myself saying, I already have a version of “x”, why would I want it again. It’s a hard habit to break for me. I love these videos you do, this series I mean. I also have always wanted to own this game. I thought I had to get it on the Genises or Mega Drive. Didn’t know there were so many ports. Thanks so much!

    The sprites on the 3DO version are 15% smaller than those in the coin-op, using only 16 colours (64 in the coin-op) 32 colours used on the background graphics and 16 colour foreground graphics.
    The coder, Keith Birkitt, previously converted Alone In The Dark to the 3DO.
    The 3DO version is based on coin-op version 2.3 (16-bit versions are based on version 1.7).
    Games A. I routines were ported over.
    Apart from the shadows, Probe admitted they didn't really make use of the 3DO hardware.

    The Saturn sprites are not bigger than the PS1s. They were just moved closer to the center of the screen, and the resolution is different as well. The PS1 sprites are bigger and the game appears to be in the correct arcade resolution. You can compare the three in your intro screen.

    I personally love this game and would probably rank it among my personal favorite fighting games. It all comes down to the aesthetic to me. the smooth claymated sprites and sound design makes each individual blow be impactful that it really immerse me into the fighting. I also don't find the controls to be nearly as agravating as others. I just think it takes some time to get used to. In any case it's a masterpiece compared to the type of game that came before it; that being the Taito developed abomination known as Dino Rex.

    Not sure who I should be more angry towards, the original programmers for refusing to help break the copy protection (even for official releases like Midway Classics), or Warner Bros for not doing anything with the IP (even if they can't pay someone to crack the DRM, they could at least pay someone to remake the game from the ground up or see if the original source code is lying around somewhere).

    Saturn version is most likely the best port. The Dos version would be best if it had arcade perfect sound and music. A game that has a surprising amount of depth if you can get around the holding buttons to perform specials. Tons of specials, combos, and strats. Hell there are 3 types of jumps you can do from different ranges. At the end of the day, one of the most important things for a fighter especially in the 90s was the ability to easily pick it up and play it.... this is not one of those games.

  • @Absentence

    I don't think the game is thaaaat bad. Sure, it's no Street Fighter II, but there are far worse Mortal Kombat (and Street Fighter) clones out there. The style and the animations are great, it has some funny ideas (well, when your 12 years old) and it has an actual combo system.

    The only cheap versions are the Genesis, SNES, and handheld versions. Which means the best one is the Genesis. The PS1, 32X, 3DO, and Saturn follow behind all around the 40-60 dollar range just for the disc. The Jaguar CD version, which isn't featured here, can run you a cool 150 just for the disc.
    If you have an Xbox, PS2, or Gamecube, version 2.3 of Primal Rage was included in Midway Arcade Treasures 2 and those can be found complete for 25 or less.
    On average, the Genesis version got the best reviews.

    I recently watched an interview with a programmer from this game and he said that in the Japanese version the special attacks worked more like Street Fighter (directionals + single button presses) rather than holding multiple attack buttons and hitting multiple directionals like in the US version. Is the Japanese Saturn version based on the US or Japanese arcade?

    • @RetroCore

      I wonder how true that is. Can't say I've ever seen this game or Mortal Kombat in any Japanese Arcade.

      A few years late but i just thought I'd add. This is what the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 version does. The PS2 version anyway. I wonder if that's where they ported that version from. I don't like the holding multiple buttons and moving the d-pad/stick way of doing moves, but the PS2 version is very annoying if you've played Primal Rage before. Not only do most moves only use one button now, but they altered a lot of the directional inputs too.
      Strangely, the port on the PC version of MAT uses the standard controls.

    I had no idea there were multiple MSDOS versions and from what you're showing it looks pretty good. There was also a port contained in Midway Arcade Treasures 2 but I don't think that was ever released for Japan. I can't speak on the Xbox or PS2 versions of that but I did own the Gamecube version. From what I remember it seemed like an emulation of the Arcade game but no lie the retail, green-lit version on the real system actually had graphical and audio glitches with several points of slowdown! Maybe it's nostalgia but I like the Genesis and 32X versions the best as it had the fastest and most responsive gameplay to me. SNES port was a massive let down. Tiny sprites, missing sounds, less animation, muffled crappy renditions of the songs, and almost unresponsive controls. Honestly, I had never noticed the lack of blood and censorship until you mentioned it lol.

    The 32x can display 32,000 colors on-screen at once, and they decided to stick with the Genesis palette. Also, I always hated the control scheme in this game. Whomever came up with "hold button, then make joystick pattern" can suck it for avoiding the SF/MK control scheme.

    • @RetroCore

      Both very true. The 32x version could have looked so much nicer than what it was. And yes, the controls in this game are stupid.

    • @Silanda
      @Silanda 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that one of the 32x's limitations was that it had no hardware support for shifting lots of sprites around; it was totally CPU driven. To reduce the workload, the backgrounds tended to be offloaded to the Mega Drive/Genesis VDP, but then you have the 16 colours per tile from 512/only 4 16-colour palettes available at once problems.

      @@RetroCore The 2 guys from Probe who did the Jaguar CD version were initally handed the 3DO version, having done a decent enough job on that in the eyes of their masters :-) they were handed the job of converting it to Saturn and Jaguar CD.
      They said limited Ram was a major issue on all 3 formats, as once they'd compiled the inital code, it clocked in at around 4MB and this without any of the sound or graphics code, let alone the 25 MB of stop-motion animation on the Dino's that had to go in.
      Cue months of 'squeezing code and graphics to fit'.
      If you imagine the SNES version, but with more detail and animation frames, you've basically got the Jaguar version.

  • @napalmhardcore
    @napalmhardcore 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You say the Saturn version has larger sprites than the PlayStation version. Unless the capture is off, that doesn't appear to be true. On the Saturn version, the characters are placed higher on the screen and the area under their feet to the bottom of the frame is larger. The PlayStation's framing is actually more similar to the arcade. The Saturn version seems to have smoother animation though. I'll reserve judgement on the colours though because as you told me recently, your capture card doesn't always play nicely with the Saturn.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking back at the footage that does seem to be the case, the saturn characters being higher up on the ground.

    I expected this to be much better than it was, even my love of Stop Motion animation didn't help. Not a bad port for 3DO, shame they weren't stop motion movies. Worth noting the GB sprites are four colors, meaning they actually layered one more shade of grey on them since 2bpp is just three colors with the fourth as transparency. Love that DOS spec gradient, wish more PC arcade ports took advantage of larger PC system memory like that but they rarely did.
    Really impressive palettization work in the Genesis port, normally things get very muted and dithered with 64 color reduction. It's shocking how bad the SNES port is, graphics, sound, controls, and presentation all toilet grade porting. 32X ports were always so lazy, you have to redo the backgrounds to get a 32X advantage rather than lifting them directly from Genesis.
    I don't think you're hard on Amiga, largely the platform was squandered with crappy designs and bad ports Egs. no new expanded joysticks for the Amiga launch and the CD32 console non ports. The average level of coding excellence really dropped off after switching from C64 to Amiga imo.
    Was curious how PS1 & SS faired since copies aren't very cheap anymore. Saturn does 2D fighter well, what a shocker. ^_^ Still I wonder why it loads faster, both were often equal for CD wait times?
