Just so everyone knows. There's a reason WHY the 5GHZ fails in the video, and that's because 5Ghz is not as reliable as the commonly used 2.4Ghz, which is used by everyone's devices and moms (microwaves, computers, etc.). Though 5GHz does offer faster throughput, it has problems penetrating solid objects as well as distance. So in the case of this reviewers test, he's having problems because the routers 5GHz is trying to penetrate 40+feet of walls (and other signals), which is not what 5Ghz is capable of doing all that well. 2.4Ghz is able to do this better, but what most people are suffering from is either bottle necking or other interference from neighbors and devices. Getting a faster router is not always the solution, you just can't buy bigger better equipment thinking it will solve the problem. You are probably adding to it. If you live in an apartment, you are most likely a victim of over crowded traffic where all channels are being used. Though it's a fact that service provider routers are cheap pieces of crap with little to no functionality, but some routers may be able to broadcast the signal better then others, but that is the general fact of 5Ghz network. With this said, people, do your research first before buying a router assuming that bigger numbers are always better. It's probably not the router's fault that it's not performing the way you expected. If you're really suffering from interference issues, then power line networking is most likely your solution over wifi.
I would just like to say that I found it easier when installing this router it is much easier and quicker to download the Nighthawk app to your phone or tablet and set it up through the app it literally takes 5 minutes versus setting it up through the computer which may take up to a half an hour
Wow I just bought one and received it from Amazon. I didn't know it was this old from the date of this video. I read that firmware updates are ruining it. I won't update the firmware, mine is working flawlessly and near quadrupled my speeds. My old router couldt keep up with the speed am paying for from my ISP but this router exceeded my expectations.
Thank you for your video! You probably won’t see this but it’s worth a shot. I’m getting an orange light on the light that has the number 2 and 3. These to Ethernet ports are direct connected to an older Apple TV and my Samsung tv. When I do a speed test it stating 100/50 mbps even tho I have 1gig speed. When I disconnect the direct connection and test the Wi-Fi I’m hitting over 500mbps. Do you think it’s just the devices that are capped at 100mbps or something else? Also which would be the better option? Lower speed direct connection or higher speed Wi-Fi?
Hi. Thanks for your review, was helpful. Do you still face the 5GHz connectivity drop issue and if yes, how frequently? What is the speed you get from the router's USB port to your laptop on wi-fi (not through ethernet cable)? Also, did you contact the customer support ever and were they helpful?
Thanks for the video. I ended up returning that model due to stability issues. I would hope that, by now, there is an update that fixes it. At the time I was running the latest firmware so no other option/fix was available.
Thanks for the "Functional" review. Was contemplating on buying this but need to clarify somethings. How far is your router placement as to your backyard area testing. Was it on the ground floor or 2nd floor? Was the 2.4ghz also very unreliable? If you did return it, what did you get as a replacement? thanks
***** . The router would be about 40 feet away with about 9 feet elevation change to the backyard. The 2.4 network was mostly reliable with the exception when streaming large files from the USB 3 port; when sometimes it would drop the signal or drop internet access and would need to be rebooted. I did end up retuning it and am back to my old Linksys router that you saw in the video. Looking for another one at the moment; when I get one I will try to make a video and review of it as well.
about the xbox issue: did you try enabling the quality of service under the advanced tab on the router, using of course, the upload quality of service?
Turn off the Wifi on your old router and just use it as a LAN router. Then get a long ethernet cord and connect your old router to the Nighthawk (with one of the four LAN ports, not the Internet one). Place the Nighthawk up high on a shelf somewhere, away from any other electronic devices or metal objects, preferably in the middle of the house. As long as your old router has Gigabit ports, you'll be good to go.
+lednerg you can have as many routers as you like in your home. just need to learn how to change the wireless channels on each router so they dont overlap one another. 1,6,and 11 are the magic numbers. alot of people overlook this but this actually helps with the wifi cause 2.4ghz band uses 12 wireless channels. if your not using 1,6,or 11 in your area then your pretty much slowing everyones wireless internet.
Well, whatever he does, he needs to get that wireless router away from his computer and other metal, electronic equipment because they're going to be blocking and interfering with the signal. And sure, he can keep the old one on, but even new devices are still pretty stubborn about switching to the best available access point. You end up having to manually switch it yourself as you move around the house. Having one wifi router placed in an optimal location can avoid needing to depend on multiple wifi networks.
So I need help, I recently moved to Brazil and I'm living in a small country town that has terrible wifi I can stand it.. If I order this will I be able to use it here with the company I use and if I can will it make my wifi better, also is this a one time purchase?
I have one of these routers in my house, but I also have an Xfinity XB7, the people I got it from said they used it as a WiFi extender, is that a real thing?
You did this review by in 2014 I see. Have you done any up dates? Did things improve? In the 2 years, Netgear "should" have done some updates to the router. Technology moves forward everyday and I am hoping that the unit that is due in house Monday will do what I need it to do.
I've had this router for about 5 years now and I have never had a problem with it until recently. The wifi has been dropping connections repeatedly, which can be annoying while gaming. It only drops for a few seconds at a time, but it is rough as it can drop at crucial times during a match. Doesn't bother me so much when it happens to my mobile devices because it will pick back up shortly. Not sure what the problem is, but I have factory reset and manually installed firmware with no success of fixing the problem. I've seen a few with the same problem, but still haven't found any actual fixes. Been like this for months now. :/
iLawfGaming did you figure out what’s making the signal drop? It’s been happening to me and driving me crazy. I want to return it because I have only had it for a month and i use it for online gaming
So I bought this exact one but my modem is downstairs and I’m upstairs but is there a chance I can just use my router upstairs without bringing my modem I want to have direct internet to start live streaming for my games?
Hello. Thanks for uploading this video review. I have the same R7000 router and came across this issue here. Not sure if you or others had the same issue I was trying to copy some files off my pc to my NAS and only received about 30MB per second of speed. I was hoping to get more like a 100MB or so. Both devices are connected to the router directly. Not sure what the problem is. Any advise what to check? Thank you in advance. Jack
+Jack Wong Hi Jack. I do not believe there is a "fix" I think that is the max that it can do, unfortunatly. Which does not give us the true benefit of USB 3.
Do you how I can run my R7000 router and my wireless cameras with out the two interfering with each other they are on the same band 2.4 GHz and it slow my internet way down. Thanks very much
+OLDMAN01570157 in the wireless 2.4ghz band there is about 12 wireless channels. it is very important to understand that on the 2.4GHz wireless channel there is only 3 channels that are NON OVERLAPPING. 1,6,11.
+Chong Vang Thanks I will look for the app I purchased some wireless cameras and they're interfering with my 2.4 GHz slowing down my speed on my router. Thank you for replying to me. And do not buy the system the defender by clearvu security cameras they did not back up their product.
I've got the ac1900 r6900 it has internet hookup connected but says wifi may not be available on my phone no internet it's not my service I plug my old router in and theres no problem
I'm using a Netgear r7000 ac1900 router. I connected a USB drive on the USB 3 port and am trying to write data (Sync Backup) from my phone to that USB. The error i get is "Read only" . I have configured the Write permission with user n password set on the router n the phone. Am i missing something. Haven't been able to find solutions.
Hello, I was wondering if this router would be good for us, Our house is around 3000 sqr ft, we currently have a D-Link Ac 750, It is placed in the front corner of the house next to the tv, my room is half way for the router to the side, and I get around 1 bar or 2 if in lucky and it barely works, my speed with 3 bars is 25 down 25 up and when I have 1 bar I have 0.55 down 1 up and even on 2 bars it's super slow around 1 down and 0.88 up. If I buy this router would my speed and range increase(by speed I mean at 2 bar and 1 bar connections) respond asap thank u.
Which one do you recommend this one or the TP-LINK Archer C7 AC1750 Duel Band Wireless AC Gigabit Router, 2.4GHz 450Mbps + 5Ghz 1300Mbps, 2 USB Port, IPv6, Guest Network.
o Smido, I can't reply directly to your comment, but here is the answer: White light means it is a gigabit connection (i.e. 1 Gigabit Ethernet Port on your computer) orange light indicates it is a 10/100 connection (i.e. VOIP Phone). Hope this helps.
I have 2 questions. 1: Can you mount that on a wall? Does it have any holes or slots on the back that it could be mounted that way? and 2: Have you tried using DD-WRT firmware?
How can i use this router as a repeater or extender, i mean without being connected with a cable straight to the modem, is it possible ? Please help i want to use it in another room too far from the principal modem
Is this router good if I leave it in my basement ? Trying to get good connection in my room on the 2nd floor pls help! (Basement-living room-second floor)
How the heck do you get +270MB/sec write speeds at the 11 minute mark?? Even if I write a file to my SSD drive it writes at about 80MB/sec max, let alone a usb stick...
andy lam 80MBps seems too low - check if TRIM is enabled! Even a regular 5400rpm HDD can surpass that easily for sequential transfers. Infact my portable USB 3.0 1TB Seagate Backup plus gives consistent 100MBps plus (maxing around 100MBps) around the first 200GB mark. My 2TB desktop D3 station gives close to 180MBps (a 3TB one can give more than 220MBps sequential based on my brief tests). However I also get poor SSD speeds around 145MBps on my compressed NTFS drive (drive compression actually helps with read speed sometimes significantly on SSDs - try it). He seems to have a really great USB 3.0 thumb drive..
+andy lam So true! This guy thinks a router with higher throughput affects local host file access and write speeds to external media. Herp derp. It would, however, only if it the file was coming from a network location (smb share, ftp, etc.), and not from C:\users\...\RecordedTV.library-ms).
I mean yes, this AC1900 has the ability to act as a DLNA-supported Media Server via the USB3.0 ReadyShare functionality. What I don't understand is why you would expect a proprietary network file protocol like ReadyShare to perform better than smb access which is universally supported and developed. You have a high-throughput, gigabit router. Get an NAS for your network files, or just do a simple network share from your PC(s) and map the network drive. Let your router facilitate access to data, don't make it try and serve it up too.
+Ryan Hopper I know what you mean and I could get NAS, My main point is that I was still getting USB2 speeds over USB3 port. As I said in the video I was not expecting full USB3 speeds like did on the local Dive-to-USB3 stick writes, but I was expecting better speeds writing to the USB stick over the USB3 port. Otherwise, what's good in a USB3 port that only produces USB2 speed? I was expecting an improvement or an advantage over USB3 port than USB2. Otherwise, what's the purpose of USB3 port on the router?
+ColoradoRMN its most likely something to do with how ReadyShare actually transfers files. I'm guessing it's at the file level and not the block level which would explain some of the discrepancy.
+Ryan Hopper also, use Unstoppable Copier or straight up ftp and you might have better luck and speeds. Windows does some very time consuming overhead for normal file copying.
hey dude, you just like me at a parallel universe, I have linksys WRT320N(E2000 hardware identical but reset button can't work) and netgear R7000, I bought this router for reason "PC Editor Choice" award, and when I get it in hand, OMG! what a big monster DC12V 5A!, the most reason I can't afford is it will reach 60 degrees Celsius in idle state, it's even hotter than my Geforce GTX1070, I want to know why, what is the cause make it so hot, the new 802.11AC wifi standard? broadcom 1GHz dual core processor? but it's idle state, not full loading, and it's ARM architectur, now I want return this item.
Hi im in need of help. My household right now runs off one router and the connection for my xbox is shit. To purchase this product and set it up next to the other router is that possible? And will i be able to run my xbox off the new router with nothing else running through that line? I want a 5 star connection.
Not sure, as there are many factors/options to consider. First you need to know/find out what is the cause of the bad connection. Assuming it is WiFi, is it that your xbox too far from the router? You could use this router as your main router to see if it gives you better coverage? Just putting this router next to your existing router would not make sense to me. A possible bettr option, if distance is an issue and it is a WiFi connection, you could put a repeater in between the existing router and where the good signal needs to be. This way you would not even need a new router.
you can use it to share files between a lot of computers in your home. if you download things you can send those files directly to a usb stick or hard-drive as well. pretty useless unless you actually share stuff.
I bought one of this to replace the one given by my Internet provider thinking it will be soooo much better but it didnt reach further than my old one and no noticeable difference from my normal N router. Disappointed!
You're review is pretty good practical demonstration. However you're part with the USB stick is complete nonsense and flawed. 300MB/s writes to a USB3.0 stick....yeah right lol. Sticks capable of that do exist but I'm pretty sure that the limit of your USB3.0 stick is actually being saturated at 40MB/s in the router test and in fact what's being measured on thw windows transfer dialogue is flushing of RAM as the test has already been carried out.
Anyone planning to buy netgear router or products be aware that you need to pay $139/year for any kind of support on the product. I had to pay $139 to netgear support for my $89 router as I had slow internet speed due to firmware update. After 90 days of purchase you need to buy support options for netgear and believe me with their regular software updates you will be ripped off.
Christian Gallegos I did get another one, Linksys EA6350. I will try to make a video on it since I had it over 6 months now and can do an in-depth review (just did not have the time yet).
What router did you find to be best for you? I just bought the nighthawk so hopefully it'll be good. I just needed the range as ill be using it as a Secondary router for wifi Also that would be great!
Christian Gallegos Hopefully your Nighthawk works a bit better then mine; I am sure they had firmware updates since I did the video. Keep an eye on it and if it is stable for you, it should be good. I am doing good with the EA6350 with the exception of one issue but resolved it back reverting back to its initial/default firmware.
Christian Gallegos The latest firmware on the EA6350 causes VPN instability (dropping connections) but the router has a "revert back to original firmware" setting and when I did that all's good again. The only other thing is that Linksys has 90 day support cutoff, so if you have issues after that (like I did) they do not want to do anything with you and want to charge for support. That's B.S. in my opinion but that thier policy. I fixed my issue by reverting back to default firmware and it fixed my VPN issue. I use VPN for work and had to have it working.
Mbps and MB/s are not the same. Windows copy's files using MB/s Megabytes per second. Mbps is Megabits per second and is the measurement your ISP uses.Eight bits are in a byte. Common mistake because marketing people sell people on bigger numbers which does not mean its faster. 30 Mbps is 3.75 MB/s
Good to know that I was not the only one. I ended up returning mine as well. Using my old router for now until I find another one that is stable. Hope they will eventually fix whatever the cause of that problem, as it does seem like a great unit if it was stable.
Sorry to say this but this router is unreliable, it does not let you use the internet whilst uploading and after about 6 months mine started dropping the internet several times a day, very annoying. I have now scrapped it and I'm using a cheap talk talk router which works just fine.
Worst customer service in the world if you have any problems. They will want to charge you $270+ just to help you with it over the phone or get upgrades. For upgrades the of the customer service reps from India have to gain remote access to your computer.
+ColoradoRMN i am a newbie- i have been told to stick my nighthawk into my existing shitty router/modem. is this right. i use adsl internet ( no coaxial cable)
If your playing a video and it stops it has nothing to do with your router it has to do with your internet service provider what’s your upload speed mine is mostly 9.8 plus and download is 180 range. I never have any problems with mine ,,,, check your internet provider bud
In my test, video is streamed locally via LAN, not online. If it was online, then yes the test would not be valid and you would be correct. In this case the testing was via LAN.
@@ColoradoRMN correct. I had the local cable / internet provider come out to investigate why my speeds were very low. Guy checked the cable lines cause that is also where the internet passes through and he noticed slower incoming speed to my router. He adjusted some of the connections and performance was returned lol.
worst router to get sigh, 5 hours of trying to get this to work but still showed the same "not connected but your status shows its good" like okay? lmao even with the modem too my "isp" was wrong when i called century link a minute ago. 200 bucks well spent. also the customer service is pretty bad.
There is a vulnerability in apple ecosystem, Find My,, and Blutooth sending out even unauthorized people who were previously hacked into your account through BonJour services and sends out the new passwords as soon as you turn on Bluetooth. I am thinking of using a hash type sign in with a double authentication plus a biometric sign in. I am getting hacked to death and getting ready to sit for my cyber boards. I can’t even keep this google fiber box they gave under control. The good news is that you don’t need Google fiber box. You can just hook ip up o rhe ethernet port from the wall.
Great review! Have been trying to decide between the r7000 and the ac68u,this helped a lot, thank you.

I had it for a week and it started dropping signal
i was wondering how to turn it on and off, thanks
Its now September of 2016 - are you still using this router? How is it working?

I have not done DD-WRT. As I recall, I think it did have two holes on the bottom for wall mount but I no longer have that router to verify.
Ok, thanks for the reply.
This router can connect all modems right? I have an TP Link ADSL2+modem can I connect this router to my modem? Please reply
+Christopher Sourav Correct, the modem (DSL or Cable) should not matter as long as you connect it to the correct port on the router.
+Ryan Hopper I don't think we are talking about router throughput while discussing USB 3 speeds. I don't think the reviewer meant that either.
hey I am using frontier as my service provider, would this still work?
yes
How is this as far as distance between it and the computer?
How do I get it to run fast without a good modem
I always thought the 5ghz band has a longer and stronger range.... Guess i was wrong. Thanks for this video.
Faster speeds, shorter range. It doesn't penetrate as well as 2.4.
Definitely
im researching a better router and am wondering, whats the usb port for? i mean what does it do?
you can use it to share files between a lot of computers in your home. if you download things you can send those files directly to a usb stick or hard-drive as well. pretty useless unless you actually share stuff.
what do people connect usbs for?
I bought one of this to replace the one given by my Internet provider thinking it will be soooo much better but it didnt reach further than my old one and no noticeable difference from my normal N router. Disappointed!
he gaves the true idea of problem perfect!!!
Thanks for watching!
do i have to plug this into a modem or can i plug this into the wall of my dorm and it work
Depends on your dorm setup. Normally, you have it plugged in to a modem / gateway, but in a dorm setup, they may already have things setup for you.
I just got this router 4 days ago. I cant get my phone to work with the wifi connection
You're review is pretty good practical demonstration.
However you're part with the USB stick is complete nonsense and flawed. 300MB/s writes to a USB3.0 stick....yeah right lol.
Sticks capable of that do exist but I'm pretty sure that the limit of your USB3.0 stick is actually being saturated at 40MB/s in the router test and in fact what's being measured on thw windows transfer dialogue is flushing of RAM as the test has already been carried out.
did u try installing a custom firmware on it like Tomato-ARM?
No; I was testing it as is, out of the box.
ColoradoRMN oh OK. Thanks
what service you had on here verizon fios??
i think if you keep using netgear genie you will continue to get firmware updates.
hey man does this have wan port for fiber ?
I have the same one as your but when I connect it doesn’t work I tried everything
so i could just plug this in and then it will work?
You would connect it to your modem/gateway.
Can I use this Router without modem straight from wall adapter?
***** No. You need a modem from either DSL or cable then you connect it to the router.
How does this compare to the Lynksys AC1900
Linksys AC1900 does look very good but I have not tested it so cannot comment. If I get my hands on one I will give it a try.
Like the Video. Do u recommend.
when i connect my firestick tv via ethernet on port 1 it blinks orange why is that? instead of white?
Red 10/100 White 1 Gig That means the Firestick has a 10/100 mbps ethernet card
Thank you for vid, someone? pressed the second button to right turning Off the wifi. Wtf problem solved.
The router itself is easy to install but the whole netgear genie thing has thrown me off and it’s not connecting properly
I've just got one and can't set it up
have you thought about putting ddwrt on it?
No; I was testing it as is.
ColoradoRMN
Turn on the QoS and you will be even happier with the performance.
r8ersazfan 1 is this router dynamic or static
What about the television channels
Change the channel's on 2.4 GHZ the speed matters n ONLY not mixed .. try it .. just real talk take it easy U all
Is the 5ghz fixed with the latest updates? can anyone confirm this?
Thank you. I have three of my ethernet ports in use but didn't know the difference beween the white (port 1) and the orange lights (ports 2 & 3).
I tried to turn off the Wi-Fi button it did not work
Stop saying "HERE" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE KNOW IT'S HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video.
I have frontier Internet can I use that router on frontier Internet
+Arthur Decker I do not know but imagine you still need a modem first for frontier/your ISP then connect this router to your modem.
+ColoradoRMN ok thanks for the help
still working with this one ? or did you upgrade ?
can i use this for vpn hiding to use hulu netflix etc...thanks
Netflxi checks if you use VPN and will no longer allow you to play its videos. Just an FYI.
thank you,what about playstation 4
hey what router are you using right now?
Christian Gallegos I did get another one, Linksys EA6350. I will try to make a video on it since I had it over 6 months now and can do an in-depth review (just did not have the time yet).
What router did you find to be best for you? I just bought the nighthawk so hopefully it'll be good. I just needed the range as ill be using it as a Secondary router for wifi
Also that would be great!
Oh what was the issue? I don't media share just regular Internet stuff, shopping, games, social network, etc... Nothing on the heavy side
+SDsurfNFun USB3 speed is 480 megabits per second (mbps), or 60 megabytes per second (MBps).
Good video!!
I bought the same router, and see the same issues. It's going back.. Can't live with 5ghz going off line.
Good to know that I was not the only one. I ended up returning mine as well. Using my old router for now until I find another one that is stable. Hope they will eventually fix whatever the cause of that problem, as it does seem like a great unit if it was stable.
Yes and I don't really need AC. My only wifi client is my phone and work laptop. N wifi is fine for that, everything else is on wired ethernet.
Anyone answer please does that router in Middle East or not
Thanks
order it from amazon
So plug in wall and it work ?
Sorry to say this but this router is unreliable, it does not let you use the internet whilst uploading and after about 6 months mine started dropping the internet several times a day, very annoying. I have now scrapped it and I'm using a cheap talk talk router which works just fine.
Worst customer service in the world if you have any problems. They will want to charge you $270+ just to help you with it over the phone or get upgrades. For upgrades the of the customer service reps from India have to gain remote access to your computer.
Are you sure its not scam line or something?
It's not a scam. It's the phone number that came with my router. If you google the number online it's the same number.
+Tim Sheldon just wow.... but how is the router? is it any good?
I work at home, and my work phone lags because of the router. As far as my home computer and TV it works just fine.
that just happen to me today I told him to fawk off and hung up on him
u need a modem too?
yeah! of course!
+ColoradoRMN i bought one, plugging it into my existing router/modem (cheap one)
Thank u
worst router to get sigh, 5 hours of trying to get this to work but still showed the same "not connected but your status shows its good" like okay? lmao even with the modem too my "isp" was wrong when i called century link a minute ago. 200 bucks well spent. also the customer service is pretty bad.
ChAnnel ..change them. N only on 2.4 GHZ. 5GHZ leave on mixed. Change channel try them out ..
Aint no body watch this!
Thx (:
Thanks for watching!
simple physics, v=f*lambda
3:00
Shit...I just bought one...
rAnge test ? go outside?
Smb
just terrible
There is a vulnerability in apple ecosystem, Find My,, and Blutooth sending out even unauthorized people who were previously hacked into your account through BonJour services and sends out the new passwords as soon as you turn on Bluetooth. I am thinking of using a hash type sign in with a double authentication plus a biometric sign in. I am getting hacked to death and getting ready to sit for my cyber boards. I can’t even keep this google fiber box they gave under control. The good news is that you don’t need Google fiber box. You can just hook ip up o rhe ethernet port from the wall.
