In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
    - 30-30 Winchester Winchester Power Point 170gr Soft Points
    - Lever action Glenfield 30A (Marlin 336) chambered in 30-30 Winchester with a 20 inch barrel
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

In my opinion, the 150 grain loads for the 30-30 are better suited for deer. I've laid the smack down on a bunch of deer and hogs with this exact same load as well as it's 150 grain counterpart. I think it's the extra velocity, but the 150s always seem to do the most damage. Please keep making videos like these!!!

      @johnnorman7708 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

I think a bit more velocity and more rapid expansion does put deer down faster more often. But good 170 grain . 30-30 loads do a decent job. And if you are shooting tougher or bigger than deer size game, 170s certainly are the way to go. An extra bit of penetration goes a long way on heavier game animals.

The 170 grain 3030 is my go to for deer. Ive killed deer over 40 years with it, and it is deadly on deer.

Absolutely perfect consistency across the big three brands of 170s. You just cant mess up by choosing Winchester, Federal, or Remington 170 grain standard ammo.

Outstanding video that shows the fantastic reality of the Winchester 170 grains PowerPoint ammo. Both weight retention and penetration are real and magnificent. Thank you for what you do for us. We appreciate it!

As one who has used 30-30 ammo for many years, Remington, Winchester and Federal have worked very well on game. The rifles I used were Marlin, Winchester and H&R. One observation - rifles tend to have an accuracy preference for one bullet weight, either 150 or 170 grains. I have no idea why because some rifles from the same maker also show bullet weight preference, which is really bizarre since they have the same twist rates. Maybe a gunsmith who knows can tell us why. You just have to try out both bullet weights to see which is more accurate in your rifle.

Probably how far the bullet sits behind the start of the rifling, the 170s will be slightly closer to the grooves. only thing i can really think of

I know the stuff is hard to get and expensive, but I've not seen any other channel anywhere on TH-cam testing the .30-30 Buffalo Bore load. It's a 190gr Hawk bullet designed to penetrate for big game, designed to maximize the .30-30 lever action capability. Really be awesome if you can procure a box and run it. BIG FAN of the channel's format with these tests.

I’ve got a video coming out Thursday you’ll like, it’s Barnes 190gr 30-30 load. The Buffalo Bore load is insanely expensive, I’m really not interested in 85 dollar a box 30-30, the Barnes version is half the price and it did EXCELLENT 👍🏼 I’ll do the Buffalo Bore eventually.

I think as a good idea. If a bullet does not stay together in gel it probably is crap if it hits bone. Did not happen here. But thoughts I’ve had watching other videos. For this video I thin the sweet spot is 150 for 3030.

I've got a Corelok 170 grain bullet I dug out of a medium sized boar after it smashed both his shoulders. It doesn't have those nice lead petals, they got ripped off and the jacket peeled back laying along the shank, with the core level.

The .30 WCF (stamped on the barrel of my 94) has endured for as long as it has because it works for the applications it's used for. I have heard that train riders during WWII used leverguns in .30-30 as weapons to carry to guard trains (don't know how true this is). I use the 94 that my grandfather bought (1950 manufacture) and my brother had, but his wife is rather antigun (after a muzzleloader ND by her stepfather), and she didn't want it in her house. So, I got it and have harvested venison with it. I LOVE that rifle!

Could it be possible that the 30 30 win. is the best cartridge of all time. I've seen Grizzly and Bull Mose drop in there tracks with a single shot at 4300 yds. Just joking I've just about shot all my deer at 75yds. Shot one at over 200 with my 92 in 44 mag which adds some elevation as the barrel jumps before the bullet leaves the barrel if you don't have 7 or so rounds in it. Works like a recoil reduction device. Oh ya it flew over backwards like in the movies but it was flying towards me. Anyways you got my subscription. 👍

I have not shot gel, nor have I gotten a deer yet with the PPU 170 flat point. I have not tested accuracy at 100,200 yards but plan to shortly. My 336 1970 scoped is now making .25 -.5 inch groups off sandbags at 50 yards with it. Is PPU in the future for testing? Thanks

I stay far, far away from any ammo made by Winchester. Literally the only company I’ve had to contact about defective ammunition, several times. Missing primers, primers that just didn’t work, bullets seated incorrectly leaving smashed brass, etc. you couldn’t pay me to trust their products when my hunt is on the line.

  • @nozrep

i do not opine that 24 inch barrel is unrealistic in any way. Folks hunted and fought with 24 inch barrels for hundreds of years. I grant that shorter barrels would be an obvious logistics and ergonomic thing for soldiers. But that’s just it. Shorter barrel lengths only became popular for hunters in the last 15 years because they were popular and functional for the soldiers in Iraq ans Afghanistan. Therefore no, a 24 inch barrel is not unrealistic, sir. It is simply, only a personal preference, which of course is totally fine. But unrealistic? Nah.

I too enjoy the "retro" artwork that Winchester puts on their boxes. And every once in a while they offer ammo in wood boxes, which is about as retro as you can get. Just icing on the cake for ammo that usually offers as good or better performance than competitive offerings that cost more.
