    Why f/32 at ISO 800 going into full diffraction? You could have shot ISO 100 @ f/11 and take two exposure to get everything in focus and significantly sharper. It's unlikely you are getting more than 20/30mpx worth of signal before diffraction blur kicks in.

    Nice video and well done -- as an X2D-100C owner since a few days after it was launched - my only guidance for you is to please use Phocus 3.7.2 to process the RAW (3FR) files and for as far into your work process as you wish. Make sure you pick Hasselblad RGB*L colour space (the widest set inn Reproduction) and then when you export to, for example, LRC/PS create an export preset that utilises "Source" output profile, Full-sized and TIFF-16-bit - just click edit the Export dialogue box. Sure the 220-250mb 3FR is converted to a 120-150mb fff format on importing into Phocus AND then the TiFF-16-bit files are 500-650mb EACH -- so -- it is just memory. Only Phocus applies the correct lens profiles AND Hasselblad's Natural Colour Solution, which on top of everything else are two reasons for buying this camera. It would be interested to hear your views comparing "processed" or RAW converted with Phocus 3.7.2 AND with LRC.
    AND yes - it will be great when Hassi release a firmware update than enables or adds a few of the things we lost from the X1D-ii and adds new capabilities.

      I'd love to see someone produce a good video on workflow and file management for X2d files. There is nothing out there. The files are in a class of their own in the sense that, as you say, the proprietary software does the best job of yielding up a basic workable file. I use Phocus because I don't use LR and cannot use C1 for them. After that I am somewhat stuck. Really not sure that I am getting the same latitude in the file when I export, say, a 200MB tiff from Phocus with default adjustments and hope to complete the work in C1. Its a great lament that the two companies cannot yield some cooperation. The shadow recovery tools in Phocus are primitive compared to what is on offer elsewhere and really do not allow one to optimise what can be puled out of the files. Being enabled to use the blacks, shadows and brightness sliders in C 1 would be a significant improvement. If you can produce a video, accepting it is very , very niche, I am all eyes

Let me say the camera is a work of art and should be on display but then I would not be able to use it. My first outing with the camera exceeded my expectation. It is lighter than my H3dII (now sold) and lighter. the pictures are as sharp as they could be, I like sharp pictures. How tight is the lens mounted to the body? Does the lens wiggle a bit when mounted to the camera? Or is is tightly connected?

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had read a buyer review (on BH I think) who said there was a lot of play between the mount and the lens but both samples of the 55m and 38mm I tested fit perfectly. No play, not too tight. The lenses themselves have a rubber gasket for weather sealing so I feel that adds a bit of cushion and allows for a more gentle fitment. However, I have no idea how this might vary across different samples of the same model.

    Hi Adam, I would said this is an excellent review, and I would like to pick one up but can't decide which lens to buy, I am going to use it for my Landscape work, so would you recommend the 38 or 55V? Thanks

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a difficult decision. My first instinct would be the 55mm. Remember that since this is essentially 6x4.5 format so the 35mm crop factor is .79. This makes the 55mm quite wide at around 43mm focal length. The 38mm will be even wider at around 30mm. All that being said I feel the 38mm might be too wide for some landscape applications but of course this is wholly subjective. I don't think you will be unhappy with either of them but I would base any decision on the more suitable focal length based on how you primarily shoot at the moment. Hope this helps.

  • @sf-evans
    @sf-evans 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Adam, thanks for the honest review. I am in that category of seriously considering this camera. I have a 503CW with a 3-lens kit I may need to sell. I'll still have a large format camera for film. But my question is, as a film shooter to another film shooter, will the X2D 100C bring such elation that I won't miss the results and experience ("flop"/"click") of the legendary V series Hasselblad? You didn't touch much on AF. I primarily shoot rangefinder. I'm fast at it and hit rate is pretty solid. Others have complained about the new X2D AF left lots of room for improvement. What say you?

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oof. I've literally took the night to consider this question. First to address your concern on whether you'll miss the results and the experience from your 503CW. I can't speak to the results really, but I'm sure you could make the images from the X2D look CLOSE to whatever film stock you happen to prefer, and the resolution would be, of course, more than plenty to crop down to say 1:1 if you're shooting a 6x6 back on your 503CW. As far as the experience, in my opinion you would likely absolutely miss it. I LOVED the handling of the X2D but I was also shooting my Bronica GS-1 right along side of it with a waiste level finder and there is no comparison to that feeling. I feel like I'm trying to compare apples with stingrays here but if you absolutely would have to sell your film Hassy kit to get the X2D I would begrudgingly advise against it I'm afraid. I feel you would be floored by the performance but if you're a medium format SLR junky the experience is most definitely not the same. Now...selling the 503CW body...and keeping your V glass to adapt with the 100C sensor of the X2D...that might be a great compromise.... I hope this helped and hasn't muddied the waters for you even further.
      As for the AF, it's light years ahead of the previous models and even those, in my opinion, were't as God awful as they were made out to be. There are times when I honestly don't understand what metric is employed when people evaluate AF...and generally say it is terrible...I'm always left asking "would you ever be truly pleased?" I found the X2D AF to be remarkably responsive and accurate. It's difficult to give a true focus timing but focus was acquired in perhaps half a second? Naturally, I shoot 99% adapted, manual lenses and literally all my cameras so just having AF available is a luxury for me anyway.
      At any rate, all the best with your choice. If you DO end up getting an X2D I'd love to hear your thoughts coming from the 503CW background.
      Jesus...I just realized this comment is monstrous.

Then I could frame what I wanted and focus on something off-center. Or… it would let me frame the shot and then it would pop up a magnifier wherever I was looking, so I could nail focus manually.

    Thanks. However, I must doubt the accuracy of the suggestion at the end about whether previous XCD lenses are up to the task of getting the most out of the resolution on offer in this and the earlier 50 MP models. I have no V lens. I have a 45p and the 35-75 zoom. I shoot a lot of detailed landscape scenes I the Alps. I do not see any want of resolving power in these older lenses and I have compared directly to the GFX lenses/system which I use alongside the X2d. The AF on the 45p is surprisingly and at times, hopelessly slow. Not so on the zoom. its plenty fast enough. Gorgeous instruments these V lenses undoubtedly are but I do not think this should lead to us overlooking the older lenses. The zoom is really up there with the best primes in the Hasselblad range so far as resolving power is concerned.

      I feel you've misunderstood. V series lenses are the much older, fully manual lenses used with the "iconic" Hasselblad cameras such as the 500 series (500C, 500CM, 503CW, ect). I made mention of them in the capacity that I would like to use the X2D 100C with adapted V lenses. All the lenses made for the X series (X1D, X1DII, 907x, X2D) are XCD designation including the lenses I tested here and the ones you mention. Having now evaluated every X camera to date along earlier XCD lenses it's my opinion that the newer lenses (at least the ones I tested) do appear to be superior in every way in terms of corner to corner sharpness across all apertures as well as reduced/non-existent chromatic aberration. I feel taking everything into account many of the earlier XCD lenses seemed to fall short of the quality expected when compared to the capabilities of the camera they were designed for use with; especially the 90mm F/3.2 which, although it was an overall fine lens, suffered from a surprising amount of edge softening and chrom. abb. Of course the increased functionality and aesthetic refinements of the new XCD lenses have been greatly increased as well in my view. The exception to this being the XCD 80mm F/1.9 which still remains my favorite X series lens to date.

      Got to agree with D Crilley there…. And by V lenses he clearly means the new ones. I certainly haven’t seen any optical issues with the “old” lenses on the X1DII, and I haven’t heard of any such criticism in the wider community. Also, will make our choices, but f/32? Seriously? I’m far from dogmatic, and will happily trade off diffraction when needed, but in those landscape shots it was completely pointless. On the other hand, a few people with extensive experience have expressed some reservations about the new lenses. Hasselblad is steering dangerously close to bling over performance with these, in my opinion. And finally, with your comparisons…. Fuji are famous for their film emulations. I’m betting you didn’t use a neutral profile for your X-Pro JPGs? Looks suspiciously Velvia to me. And I would suggest when comparing Hasselblad raw to JPG that you open the raw in Phocus, not Lightroom. Then you would be comparing like with like.
      I know it is much easier to criticise than create, and I certainly appreciate the effort you’ve made to create this video, and fully understand your enthusiasm for the X2D, but I think when making recommendations for such expensive equipment you owe it to your audience to widen your research a little bit…

      Curious your feelings about original XCD lenses. I own for years the XCD21 45P 45 80 90 135 and x 1.7 and never found any corner weakness or chromatic aberration with these lenses. But I found some on my adapted HCD28.
      Perhaps is it because I use only Phocus RAW processing, as it is known that their lens profiles are way better than any other softwares.
      I notice chromatic aberrations on adapted Zeiss V lenses as the automatic lens correction only works after typing in lens model, aperture and distance, after what all aberrations are gone.

      I was never an enormous fan of the X series of lenses aside from the 80mm F/1.9 which remains one of my favorite lenses I've ever used. When I reviewed the 90mm XCD I did find it somewhat underwhelming based in purple aberrations and seemingly pronounced softening at the widest aperture. All to be expected, but given the reputation and price it underperformed. In my opinion, the new line iteration of lenses are supremely superior in everyway.

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and I would go further by saying I would recommend that for optimum performance to use the proprietary raw processor from any camera manufacturer as it is geared for their specific image files. However, seeing how I have talked about the focus software three previous times in other Hasselblad reviews I thought a fourth was rather unnecessary.

    With the exception of some professionals (almost) nobody needs such a camera with 100MP. The kind of images you show here could be done with every full frame camera which costs only a fraction of the Hasselblad. It's a "nice to have" instrument - not a necessity for good photography.
