  • Dr. Sharpe and his crew visited the West End nest located on Santa Catalina Island and banded the triplets. Akecheta and Thunder oversaw the proceedings. Akecheta came back promptly with a small fish.
    Per Sr. Sharpe's updates: 1st banded chick 23/D is a male; 2nd banded chick 24/D is the youngest bird, a male; 3rd banded chick is the largest and probably oldest chick, a female.
    IWS usually bands males on right leg and females - on left leg.
    Criteria used to sexing: beak depth over 32mm and tarsal thickness over 16mm tend to be female.

    Resident female: K-91 Thunder, hatched in 2009 in the Two Harbors territory, Santa Catalina Island. Parents: K-82 Cholyn and K-81 Chase.
