The light variant, the M108 Howitzer, was phased out during the Vietnam War, but many of them were rebuilt as M109s. The Ground System Division of United Defense LP, now known as BAE Systems Land and Armaments, developed the M109.

      Not only were you on a crew, you were there when the wall came down! What a historic event.
      Balls of steel. Just like the nuclear USAF guys constantly flying 2-3 planes 24/7/365 with payloads going up to the Warsaw pact and back around Greenland, up to Canada then back around to the south of the US, man all of you guys could stay awake some crazy hours. Especially the guys attached to SAC. I forget what happened but one had to make an emergency landing in either Greenland or Iceland and they weren't too fond of having a nuclear bomber halfway crashing in the snow, I think the landing gear didn't come down either, not that it would've helped in those days.
      Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸

      W.Germany, 85-87 M109a2 Pinder Barracks. I was in 1/22Fa, 1AD. Pinder Barracks was Div Artillery Headquarters.
      I loved this system. I moved around in my unit, from Officer Driver to Gun Dog, to Armorer, and NBC slave...but the best thing I ever saw was 6 guns, firing 3 rounds of ICM. We shot alot, but I didnt often get to observe impacts. I have been screaming for YEARS, we NEED the ICM or DPICM. Watching that hillside just disappear in multiple explosions and dirt... WOW.
      Where were you? Neuremberg here, but we deployed alot. Graf, Hoenfels....

    The M109 project managers have been very clever over the years. They first had an entirely new turret, and sold it to congress as an upgrade. The next time around they had an entirely new hull, sold also as an upgrade. The current M109 has 0% compatibility with earlier generations. It is the US Army's version of the Super Hornet program. Upgrades. Sure. Sure. Same system, look no further, write those checks.

    I was an F.O and called in fire from most of our big guns in Viet-nam and later in Desert Storm. The longest ranged weapon we used was the M-107 (175MM), range 28 miles, the hardest hitting was the M-110 and M-110A1 (8 Inch or 203 MM). I think that the later should be up graded and brought back, Taiwan still uses the M-110A1. Of course, we still have the 105MM in use, mainly in our Air Assault units or Airborne.

      The issue with the open crew area in the 175 mm and 8” howitzers against counter fire is obvious. In the 80’s FA toyed with adding a ballistic shield, but went with MLRS for that mission.

      We will probably never again use naval caliber guns because we're not fun anymore.
      But to be real about it, all the M110 barrels became MOABs. The remainder are demil'd museum pieces. There's probably less than a battalion's worth of functional 8in guns in the US.

    When I was in the Army in the late sixties, they had the 8-inch self-propelled howitzer in their arsenal. That translate to 203 mm. If that vehicle is still around, I would think that it would be more devastating than 155 mm artillery. One of them set up about 400 feet from our compound in Vienam and every time they fired that sucker, the ground would shake.

      The 203 has a bigger/more powerful shell, the problem is that there are no modern extended range rounds for it as there are for the 155, it needs a crew of 8 instead of 4 and more importantly, it can't shoot and scoot

      I believe 30 million rounds would be nice because it would allow for 82k(nearly three times as many as was used at the hight if the Ukraine war)to be fired a day in a war if need be but it would cost a good bit to store the rounds. But that could be fixed by selling the oldest rounds as new ones are produced. And best to have them at every base that has artillery for each size 105,155,and 227 rockets and ATACMS

    While in combat as a JFO, you can always tell if your rounds that you called for were from a SP, or towed. But one thing I can say is the are dead accurate when it comes to long rage destruction, especially with VT, and air burst. It was a big part of bringing us back home in one piece. I would be horned to go out and do a Polar mission using this new 155. Especially for FFE. People dont understand the role that the 155 plays on the Battlefield. You can really stop the enemy quickly before you have to call for air support. Love it! Its a game changer with the amount it can fire increasing the FFE rate to 12 instead of 6. We will just have to wait and see.

    24-40 kilometers with high accuracy. Damn.
    During active warfare the ability to put shell after shell onto an area where the enemy is dug in, has their own artillery and armor firing at you, is something that can't be stressed enough. High explosive shells is key. Just like in tank main cannon use. High explosive shells are always in demand. Tank on tank, artillery on tank isn't very common.

    I never liked the M109 artillery piece but loved the self propelled 8 inch howitzer when I was in the Marine Corps. The 8" howitzer can put a round inside a garbage can at 18 miles using the RAP round. That is never been achieved since then even though the the 8" howitzer was first introduced in the 1950's. The 8" howitzer had the best & more accurate sights then any other howitzer made since. The military was stupid with scraping all 8" howitzers just before I was discharged from the Marine Corps.
    The thinking at the time was to have the 105mm howitzer's up with the front line troops then the M109 & M198 howitzer's & now the M777 howitzer were farther back to support the ground troops & the 105mm howitzer's while being highly mobile. The 8" howitzer was a general support howitzer which was highly mobile & able to support ground troops along with providing counter artillery support for the 105mm & 155mm howitzer's since no other artillery piece could shoot so far & more accurately .

      Well the guided Excalibur 155mm compensates for that, though they ain't cheap. And for heavy stuff they have the heavier hitting Guided MLRS missiles....of course the 203mm could pop heavy stuff all day for cheaper. In the field gun side, the 105mm is being supported with 120mm vehicle mortars, for when they need heavier stuff and the 155mm stuff is too busy hitting stuff over the horizon.

    • @donaldhollingsworth3875
      @donaldhollingsworth3875 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I was int he Marine Corps, the 105mm howitzers supported the infantry on the front lines such as mortar rounds did. Then the M109 & the M198 155mm howitzers were further back but still provided direct support to the infantry. The self propelled 8" howitzer which could change position at a moments notice to support the infantry or to provide counter battery support for 105mm,M109, % the M198 howitzers Also the 8" howitzer could also be used as counter fire or direct fire while the infantry & the other artillery moved. At this time, tanks were used as front line weapons which you see from footage from WW11. The tanks would not advance or carry troops & support the infantry.
      I learned all this while serving in the infantry & tanks. It gave me great insight on how the tanks were under under utilized at that time. I served with many infantry companies even while I had a 0811 MOS rating which is artillery canon crewman. That sure in shit didn't help my chances of landing o job after I was discharged.

      The European artillery systems are very impressive and advanced but the US basically rules the Americas so they’ve had no ambition to create artillery systems like the the Europeans. You won’t be seeing an artillery war with the US in any conflict. With the advent of airpower trying to match artillery on equal footing with your artillery is considered obsolete. Western doctrine intends to fight massive artillery formations using far superior airpower. In terms of exact use, HIMARS and M270 are the American equivalent of Russian artillery and they’re highly flexible and fast systems with MLRS and short-ranged ballistic missiles in two systems.

    It’s amazing the things humans can make to destroy each other with. The incredible amount of money countries spend on these things is astounding. If everyone stopped fighting and directed their efforts and money to furthering the human race we might be exploring the galaxy and never worrying about diseases because they would have all been wiped out. We might even be living twice as long, maybe even staying young, healthy, and active forever. But it will never happen, humans are just not intelligent enough for that.

      In other words, if human beings were entirely different to the point of not being human at all, humans would be more successful. That's not the most coherent arguument. It's not a matter of intelligence. Our tribal and predatory nature are what made us successful in the first place.

    • @ecleveland1

      @@Nerval-kg9sm I agree with you that “our predatory and tribal nature are what made us successful.” But at some point that murderous rage to protect what is mine, or I’ll kill you if I don’t get my way, needs to fade far back and we need to refocus that energy towards bettering all of humanity at the cost of no one. Look don’t get me wrong, I carry a gun everywhere I go and sleep with an M4 Carbine beside my bed. I live in a good neighborhood but the bad guys don’t live but a few miles away. I’m not going to see humanity evolve past killing each other in my lifetime. • @peghead
      @peghead 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, the reason humanity is as advanced as it is today is directly tied to our constant need to kill each other en mass. If not for war and the never-ending attempt to succeed in overwhelming our enemies, we would be lucky in 2023 to possess 16th century technology. The fact that the U.S. military progressed from a front-line bi-plane in 1908 to a super-sonic spy plane (SR-71) that travels at rifle-bullet speeds in 50 yrs and traveled to space regularly by the 1960's is 100% attributable to the need to wage war and succeed. That being said, WAR SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS, PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.
