I've never understood how the D-Panel can revise a score (up or down) after an inquiry has been submitted without considering the E-score. For example, here Kara's rings were probably downgraded to split leaps because her back foot was lower than shoulder level. But if the E-panel thought she received credit for a ring (judged her foot at or above shoulder level), they should have deducted for foot at or below head level and insufficient arch/head release. But those deductions would not be proper for a split leap. Can anybody explain?
Thank you! It would be so interesting to see/know the D of the composition they were going for. It seems to vary so widely from vault where the D score is so simple. I remember having some days when I would make all my connections and be on, and other days it just wasn’t happening. Fascinating how variable it gets! Poor Kara!
Is it possible, since Kara has very good turning form and great flexibility, to replace a few iffy leaps and jumps from the ring position with another E element? Like a split leap 1/1 (2.501) or a Johnson 1/2 (2.506)? Or maybe even a wolf jump/hop 1 1/2 (2.512)? Of course, they'd be new elements to her, perhaps, but they might tip the judges favor if the coaches can take away the grey areas in which to deduct.
Okay so QUESTION - How long after the competition can the coaches see, the scoring sheet or judges panel, in order to see what was deducted? Can they see it that night after competition, right after that rotation? Next day? When can they see the rundown of what the judges took?
The vid replay is slowed down during rescore, so what was given be benefit of the doubt gets removed. My friend sent me the inquiry rule. It says the score can be held, moved up or moved down. You don't get to keep the same score and hope it goes up. Everything is tossed back and recalculated from scratch. Personally, this would have not been the routine for a slow mo rescore to me. If nothing else, FIG used Brooklyn and Kara as examples to the more successful programs, do not waste our time with inquires, if it's just padding the score. I doubt a gymnast from Cyprus or Moldova would have been dragged so hard. Thanks for the vid! Bitter we won't see Brooklyn's FX.
There is Artificial intelligence now so they have a multi angle view on the routine for inquiries. And Cyprus or Moldova wouldn't have risked losing 300$ for an inquiry
look......i’m not one to say “i told you so,” but i’ve been telling the Kara stans since day one that her ring leaps will probably only skate past the judges 50% of the time at best. i like the idea of her routine and if she and her coaches at GAGE had worked on those rings i would stan, but she has zero chance at an olympic medal at this point.
I said the same thing when Eaker fans tried to call me hateful for saying her beating Simone at a training camp was a fluke and due only to Simone's mistakes, USA scoring, or both. And here were are, with the exact things happening at Worlds that you and I both said would happen. 🙄😂

Yes, when they downgraded her switch ring earlier to a switch leap, that nullified the switch leap in her intended leap series, which then nullified the leap series altogether.
She really messed up going to last years worlds. She should have did what Jade Carey and AT LEAST give herself the option to go to the Olympics as an individual

99ilana in a ring leap there are rules: the head must be back, the back foot should be at least at head/shoulder height, the back leg bent to 90degrees.
@@MaryMary-ov6kl thanks, that's good to know. It would be good to see a picture of where she went wrong - was it that her back foot wasn't high enough? Back leg bent? Front foot?
99ilana I’m not a gymnast but have been watching for years. When slowed down her back foot get to 90 but her front leg isn’t straight yet. When she gets to 180 with her legs her back knee is not bent to 90 anymore. Typically with a ring jump the foot/ feet will touch the back of your head.
Maybe this is a wake up call before tokyo to ditch some of the risky skills that are not even getting their value , and construct her routine in a way she is consistent and not hammered by the judges , because i feel her reputation as a specialist for tokyo is fading , they wont risk a spot out of 4 for a specialist that might not deliver or just for a couple extra tenths ...i mean i felt really sad when that happened to her , a lil dumb for her coaches to request and inquiry when she already qualified, i know they wanted to see what to improve for finals but now there is no finals
Submit a inquiry when you're already qualified is not only stupid, is something more!! come on everyone knows that her rings are far away from what it should be, the only ones that still thinking that what she does is a ring leap are her coachs! please someone put Kara's coachs to watch Flavia Saraiva or Anna Pavlova doing a ring leap for then to see how a ring leap really looks like.
I agree her ring leaps need to be worked on, but since her D score was originally higher, had the judges originally credited them? What did the coaches think needed to be fixed- what did they think she was not given credit for? All I could think were connections. Kara is a beautiful gymnast, so I hope she can work on the rings or change the composition of the routine to score higher without ring leaps.
Kara: there are so many other skills you can perform, why do THREE variations on a skill you are poor at? It makes no sense. Do an easy double and triple wolf turn like everyone else and call it a day.
I don't hate Kara in anyway, but everyone knew it was unfair fully crediting her rings the whole season, then add a prepotent inquiry to make it even higher. Honestly, I thought it was satisfying and a bold decision from jury.
I disagree with the downgrade but the execution score should've been lower due to the body shape deduction on each of those rings. She should not have been discredited of a leap series because she had one and should've poor rhythm deduction instead.

Can somebody tell what’s the difference between switch leap and change leg? I honestly thought before watching this video that those skills are the same.
Tbh I think everyone should stop blaming her coaches. It was a silly mistake, but they really only wanted the best for her. Like I know they should’ve thought it through more but kara was clearly confused with it and they just wanted her to get the highest score she could
Can someone explain what a "D" is and what connection value is, and why her performance was bad? I'm new to gymnastics so I dont really understand, thankss!!
The D score evaluates how hard the skills in the routine are. Skills are ranked by letters, so the easiest skills are A level and the harder ones I think go till i but I could be wrong. If you connect skills, this makes the routine more difficult so they add points for the connection.
She has quite a lot more arm waving and posing than I've seen in a while. Reminded me of the Gogean/Khorkina era beam routines where it was 3/4 posing and posturing.
Why is Kara’s composition requirment only 1.5? What was the requirement that she didn’t do. This is really shocking. From a potential 6.8 difficulty, then downgraded to 5.4.
Thank you for making this very informative video- great job! I do have a question that makes me concerned about the expertise of beam judges. Why didn't they see these deductions during the competition? And if they missed these deductions on Kara, how many other scores would have been greatly changed due to a 2nd look?
Technically, it wasn't a deduction, it was a devalue (they can't change the execution score after the fact). And it was actually only one thing they modified, it just so happened that that one change had a major impact on the routine's difficulty score.
The attempted skills weren't repeated. They only became "repeated" because she didn't get the first skill credited as a ring, it was downgraded to a leap, so when she then did the leap it was technically repeated even though she was trying a different skill. In the US competions (and Pan Ams) she got credit for the ring.
Im not a gymnast, but I used to be a figure skater. Isnt the ring leap quite impossible to handle properly directly after the mount? Is that why she is having trouble with it? It that natural follow up from the mount?
Her coaches keep messing up. Not only did they inquire after she made the beam final but they also let leanne wong do a 3½ twist(which she has been having trouble on) and triple twist in the same rutine. Which can(and did) cause a problem with her d score when she only did the triple
Your videos are great but a little more explanation would be good. I.e what requirement was she missing in the second scoring? And it would be good to see the scores side by side at the end. I know I've watched it twice but her routine seems to go on forever.
The coaches should have realised why the D score was so low but could easily have checked after the competition. They did not have to submit an official inquiry. Having found out what the problem was they could have then fixed that problem for EF just like they did for the team final.
Because her ring jump got downgraded to a split leap, when she later did a split leap as part of a series it was a repeated skill so was discounted (not credited). That meant she wasn't credited the leap series at all, which is one of the required elements - hence her low composition score. The video doesn't explain it too well.
I'd like a similar video explaining Brooklyn Moor's qualifying floor routine - her downgrade took her out of the event final as well. Thanks in advance!
@@Svartr.HrafnSvartr me too.Her music and choreography is gorgeous and I love her Podkopayeva. I think Nina has an ankle issue. She would have come in 8th probably anyway and I think Moors has a better shot!
I like her style but I'm not really a fan but I disagree with the downgrade and leap series requirement. First, she didn't put her foot down and connect it into another leap. Her ring elements should not have been downgraded because it looks like a decent ring but it should've been a 5 tenths worth of deduction each for insufficient arch, rear foot at shoulder height, and insufficient split.
Her split ring leap definitely shouldn’t be credited but it’s surprising that at least in 2018 world team trial she hit her split jump ring and her switch ring and her back leg is actually at her shoulder height but in 2019 she just doesn’t hit her ring, her rings were always questionable but it was at least should have been credited in 2018
Her supposedly "switch ring" has been downgraded to a "switch leap" only. And she use switch leap to fullfil 2 dance elements (switch + switch 1/4). And the COP states that you cannot repeat a skill to fulfill CR (if she had done the leap series first, or got the switch ring credited, she would've got that additional 0.5 CR)
EMBARRASSING! i thought she fell or something to get that bad score but its because of an inquiry? LMAO!! this is literally the first time i've seen an inquiry where the score goes down!! hahaha. her coaches must not be able to sleep at night
Really? Because itn also happened here to Brooklyn Moors. So embarassing? What are you 12? These young ladies work their asses off. Shes in the final anyways so HA
hi! new here & have a few questions (1) why does she only have a 1.5 for composition requirements? wouldn't that be an easy way to add .5? (2) what do the red highlighted skills mean?
So basically there are 4 x 0.5 requirements and one of those is a leap combination. Ordinarily, she has a switch leap to a switch 1/4 to fulfill this. But before this, she attempted a switch ring which wasn't credited and therefore was downgraded to a switch leap. And because you can't repeat a skill more than once (which is what the red means), her switch leap that was meant to be in her leap combo wasn't counted because she "had already done one". So that skill wasn't counted so she had no leap combo
@@gracesewell8961 i tought if there is a case with multiple interpretations, then the one that benefits the gymnast would be used. So instead of nulified the one in her leap searies, wasnt the one after mount that should be nulified ?

Her switch ring got downgraded to a switch split, so her *actual* switch split later got thrown out as a "repeated" skill -- basically, they treated it as if she hadn't done it at all. Since that was part of one of her requirements, she didn't get credit for that requirement.
Basically the judges saying that the ring leaps aren’t good. That’s what annoys me about her routine, those ring leaps. Especially the first one, I’m sorry but it’s awful

In both downgraded leaps her back leg is below shoulder height. Also in the second downgraded leap she doesn't even get close to a ring.
The deductions must be applied based on the attempted element, regardless of whether or not it was credited.
Thank you for explaining!
Thank you for making this!
They dont.
Unlike figure skating, all you get is the final score only. You dont get a copy of the marking sheet or what so ever.
They can’t. But there are American judges in the delegation who can ask the beam judges where the problems arose.
coaches get D score and E score, that’s it
The vid replay is slowed down during rescore, so what was given be benefit of the doubt gets removed.

Yes, when they downgraded her switch ring earlier to a switch leap, that nullified the switch leap in her intended leap series, which then nullified the leap series altogether.

Yaaasss thank you so much for this video!
Thank you, this was awesome!
Kara: there are so many other skills you can perform, why do THREE variations on a skill you are poor at? It makes no sense. Do an easy double and triple wolf turn like everyone else and call it a day.
Wolf turns are not at all easy...
I don't hate Kara in anyway, but everyone knew it was unfair fully crediting her rings the whole season, then add a prepotent inquiry to make it even higher. Honestly, I thought it was satisfying and a bold decision from jury.
This routine makes me so sad. I was so rooting for her and Sanne since I loved their routines most. And non of them qualified. Frustrating
Sanne downgraded a lot....
I disagree with the downgrade but the execution score should've been lower due to the body shape deduction on each of those rings. She should not have been discredited of a leap series because she had one and should've poor rhythm deduction instead.

Michael Sy They are the same skills. Some places call it a switch leap, and others a change leg leap. Here in England we call it a change leg:)

Can someone explain what a "D" is and what connection value is, and why her performance was bad? I'm new to gymnastics so I dont really understand, thankss!!
D score is a a difficulty score or start value
Connection value is extra points given for connection
The D score evaluates how hard the skills in the routine are. Skills are ranked by letters, so the easiest skills are A level and the harder ones I think go till i but I could be wrong. If you connect skills, this makes the routine more difficult so they add points for the connection.
What does it mean she was already qualified for EF? What does ef stand for?

I'd like to know the answer to this question, too! 🤔
A leap/dance series ... You cannot use a repeated skill to fulfill a composition requirement
@@MultiChantal22 ohhh wow okay thanks!
So Ellie Black is out, than she gets the final
Why is Kara’s composition requirment only 1.5? What was the requirement that she didn’t do. This is really shocking. From a potential 6.8 difficulty, then downgraded to 5.4.
she missed out on the requirement of two leaps being connected
Simone Dutton she could have just performed two easier leaps that are easier to connect. In that way, she would not miss the requirement. Poor Kara!
Thank you for making this very informative video- great job! I do have a question that makes me concerned about the expertise of beam judges. Why didn't they see these deductions during the competition? And if they missed these deductions on Kara, how many other scores would have been greatly changed due to a 2nd look?
Good question. They should be penalized for their inability to judge. They should get rid of the inquiry system. It makes no sense.
Technically, it wasn't a deduction, it was a devalue (they can't change the execution score after the fact). And it was actually only one thing they modified, it just so happened that that one change had a major impact on the routine's difficulty score.
If im not wrong, the inquiry is done by the robots
So why was she getting credited for those skills in usa if it was repeted and how did the judges not see skills were repeated?
@Chanel Oberlin Don't hate on Jade she's worked very hard on artistry in the past years.
@@ragansmithgymnastics7782 yeah I agree with you she improved alot, I'm sad she isnt in the floor finals
The attempted skills weren't repeated. They only became "repeated" because she didn't get the first skill credited as a ring, it was downgraded to a leap, so when she then did the leap it was technically repeated even though she was trying a different skill. In the US competions (and Pan Ams) she got credit for the ring.
@@alisont.6940 thank you for explaining, makes so much sense now!
Did any of her ring jumos/leaps get credited
And who inquired her routine
Al Fong, her coach
@@luxus8816 al wasn't on the floor; it was armine. kara was also visibly confused why her d-score was so low.
It would be good to put in what Kara and her coach thought it should be?
Im not a gymnast, but I used to be a figure skater. Isnt the ring leap quite impossible to handle properly directly after the mount? Is that why she is having trouble with it? It that natural follow up from the mount?
She is leaping forward and doesnt have time to tilt her head back.
I wonder whats being said in the meetings at USA gymnastics. Will somebody be blamed?
Her coaches keep messing up. Not only did they inquire after she made the beam final but they also let leanne wong do a 3½ twist(which she has been having trouble on) and triple twist in the same rutine. Which can(and did) cause a problem with her d score when she only did the triple
so had she done the skills in a different order she would have met the criteria requirements ??
Your videos are great but a little more explanation would be good. I.e what requirement was she missing in the second scoring? And it would be good to see the scores side by side at the end.
I know I've watched it twice but her routine seems to go on forever.
The coaches should have realised why the D score was so low but could easily have checked after the competition. They did not have to submit an official inquiry. Having found out what the problem was they could have then fixed that problem for EF just like they did for the team final.
What’s the point of Kara Eaker on the team. The US isn’t weak on BB and she couldn’t hit in EF to save her life.
Where is the connetion value the judjes changed? I see only one

@@gymnastea thanks!
Which CR did she miss?
The real question is why the score was so high at first...
Because she's an american gymnast (?)
Her split ring leap definitely shouldn’t be credited but it’s surprising that at least in 2018 world team trial she hit her split jump ring and her switch ring and her back leg is actually at her shoulder height but in 2019 she just doesn’t hit her ring, her rings were always questionable but it was at least should have been credited in 2018
Why is her composition score only a 1.5 instead of 2.0? What did she not do to qualify for that extra 0.5?
Her supposedly "switch ring" has been downgraded to a "switch leap" only. And she use switch leap to fullfil 2 dance elements (switch + switch 1/4). And the COP states that you cannot repeat a skill to fulfill CR (if she had done the leap series first, or got the switch ring credited, she would've got that additional 0.5 CR)

Why is the CR only 1,5 what did she miss?
Did any of her ring jumps/ leaps get credited?
Yea... 1
hi! new here & have a few questions (1) why does she only have a 1.5 for composition requirements? wouldn't that be an easy way to add .5? (2) what do the red highlighted skills mean?
So basically there are 4 x 0.5 requirements and one of those is a leap combination. Ordinarily, she has a switch leap to a switch 1/4 to fulfill this. But before this, she attempted a switch ring which wasn't credited and therefore was downgraded to a switch leap.
And because you can't repeat a skill more than once (which is what the red means), her switch leap that was meant to be in her leap combo wasn't counted because she "had already done one". So that skill wasn't counted so she had no leap combo
Grace Sewell you explained it way better than the video! I don't think the video explained it very well at all!
