They decommissioned her after almost 70 years of service. She’s docked at Fraser Shipyards in Superior, WI. I drove by her yesterday on my way home from Brule.
I remember when it went down. When the problems started everyone was glued to the news for progress of the journey. My uncle was a Great Lakes fisherman explaining what was going on. I when we got the news it floundered it was devastating. Lightfoot’s song would always bring back the feelings of that day. His line about 14 more miles they’d have reached Whitefish Bay, we had crossed our fingers that the ship would make it there.
I was a teenager when that song came out. I had no idea it was about a modern catastrophe. I just assumed it was some old sailor ode about a long lost ship.😢
Lakes freighters were often lengthened by cutting them in half at midship, and adding significant length in the middle. I never thought trusting those welds was a good idea.
Ok so from reading some of the comments here it looks as though many people don’t understand the Great Lakes; particularly Superior Michigan & Huron. They aren’t lakes in the traditional sense; they are vast inland seas (so are Erie & Ontario but they’re smaller even tho many ships have gone down in both) Superior is over 1300ft deep in places. It’s so large it creates its own weather patterns. And that it’s essentially a humungous bath tub as its landlocked save for the Soo Locks in Sault St Marie When a November gale hits (I was deer hunting as a kid w my dad & grampa & uncles in the UP when a storm hit later that night) the power is awesome. Sitting in the van on a 150ft bluff watching those 5-8ft white caps crash onto the rocks & cliff below was a sight to behold & one I’ll never forget I’ve watched documentaries about the Fitz & in one a Navy Captain talked about Superior in winter & how it was the worst seas he’s ever experienced; including the North Atlantic More than 10,000 wrecks lay at the bottom of the Great Lakes; they’re some of most treacherous waters in the world & VERY deserving to be in the first part of this fantastic video Come to Michigans “west coast” apart from the women lol I’ll put our beaches up against any other in the world.
