      @@jonprice3342 While it's nice to learn other languages, it's not "rude" if you don't learn Welsh, unless you've moved to a predominantly Welsh speaking area (e.g. parts of North Wales). It takes a lot of time to become conversant in a language and people will generally only invest that time if they're going to use their second language regularly.

    I'm Irish, and I thought the two Welsh episodes were in the top 3 for Season III (along with Princess Margaret's hilarious dinner with US President Lyndon Johnson). I also thought Josh O'Connor's performance as Price Charles was excellent. His portrayal made you empathise with his character, which is quite unique for this show. Very surprised though that Northern Ireland wasn't even mentioned once in Series III, espeically as that time period from 1964-1977 saw the start of The Troubles, Bloody Sunday and the Birmingham and Guilford pub bombs, among other atrocities. I guess they won't be able to ignore the issue come Series IV when they will have to cover Lord Mountbatten's murder by the IRA in Sligo in 1979.

    Welsh as a Celtic language not unlike Irish or Scottish Gaelic are brilliant and beautiful languages. I just wish I had access to learn them from fluent speakers here in Canada. Welsh kinda freaks me out though because the spelling really throws off the pronunciation. I just watched the episode and wondered if young people in Wales today still speak the language. Is it still used in everyday situations or is there a difference between rural and city areas?

      Welsh is still pretty widely spoken as an everyday language in Wales, about 19% of Wales' population speak Welsh.

      Yes, Wales are known for resurrecting their language after a determined effort, they have 1/4 million speakers of Welsh I believe. They have in fact worked with people in my home country New Zealand, where Māori have tried to firstly retain and then increase the use of, our language.

      Lord Kiddledore you’re welcome :) I didn’t think anyone spoke welsh either, until the partnerships with my own people and we learnt of how successful they had been, it’s really impressive. Sadly NZ has a different scenario with a fragile race relations and the refusal to put Māori as a core subject in schools, but other measures have been adopted and proven helpful.

      Ceredigion, where Aberystwyth University is (that's the uni Charles learnt Welsh at, and the university I attended) is one of the few Welsh speaking majority areas. 54% of residents of Ceredigion speak Welsh. In Aberystwyth itself that drops to 39% but considering that half of the town's population are students including a significant number of International Students and non-Welsh Brits that figure of 39% is very impressive compared to the Welsh average of 19% of citizens speaking Welsh.

      They’re both Celtic languages but Welsh, Cornish and Breton are Brittonic (originated from Britain). Irish, Scottish and Manx form the Goidelic languages.(originated from Ireland). I’m not sure how exactly they link up to be part of the Celtic language or more-so the major differences between the two to make that distinction but it is interesting to say the least.

    I never even knew that Welsh was so far removed from English until I watched The Crown S2. I just always assumed Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English were different dialects that evolved and were partly comprehensible to all the speakers, somewhat like Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Guess I was wrong!

    • @ClaribelleC
      @ClaribelleC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's really interesting! But as you've probably now discovered, they are very different languages, each telling the story of the different settlers and invaders into Britain throughout history. Welsh, Cornish, Cumbric (now extinct, but was spoken in Northern England and the lowlands of Scotland), Breton, and very probably Pictish (also extinct, but was spoken in northern Scotland) all evolved from the ancient Brythonic language; the language spoken by the ancient Britons throughout the island of Britain for thousands of years. When the Angles, Saxons, etc (better known as the Anglo-Saxons) invaded/arrived on the island of Britain in the 5th century A.D., they brought with them their Germanic language; an ancient form of the English we all know today, and went on to colonise the part of Britain that is now England. Around that time, the Gaelic-speaking Scotti tribe began to dominate the Pictish kingdom in northern Scotland, eventually going on to dominate the Cumbric-speaking kingdoms in much of southern Scotland before going on to form the Scotland that we all know today. And the ancient Britons were reduced and forced back into the parts of Britain now known as Wales and Cornwall, with Cornwall eventually being absorbed into the nation of England.
      So the name Scotland comes from the name of the Scotti tribe, while the name England comes from the term 'Angle-land', and the name Wales comes from the old-English derogatory term 'Wēalas'; a term used by the Anglo-Saxons to refer to the native Britons. And even after living side by side on the same island for 1,500 years, the Welsh, Scottish, and English have all managed to fiercely hold onto their individual identities, histories, cultures, and languages. :)

      @@thenextshenanigantownandth4393 True, in the earliest writings where the Scotti are mentioned, it does appear to be a term that was used by the Romans to describe all Gaels from what is now Ireland. But the meaning of the term eventually changed, and was narrowed down to refer only to the group of Gaels that had settled in northern Britain. And since this group shared a common culture, kinship, and language, the word tribe seemed appropriate; at least up until their language and culture extended to the Picts and the Britons. But I apologise if I caused offence. :)
