Twenty takes? Luxury! It was more like one minute to ten on the final recording day and that's the guff that they were forced to put into the episode!

To be fair the Daleks weren't sexist as they killed one male and one female.

The machinery played up - it was supposed to be 'DIE' and it came up 'DEI'....
Because of how poorly acted the deaths are, it makes Bakers reactions to the killings look like over acting
Maybe the hostages are particularly stoic and the killings are particularly painless.

They just wanted to get out of the story as quick as possible.
The actors were playing slaves being worked to death. At least their deaths were quick.
This could have been one of the most horrifying Dalek scenes of all time, but these extras make it look like a joke. Just in general, Destiny of the Daleks is a story that sounds great in theory, but everything seemingly conspires to make it into a flop of a serial. I do weirdly enjoy it in the same way I enjoy a lot of goofy Who stories that aren't necessarily good, but it could have been so much more, maybe even a worthy followup to Genesis of the Daleks, if some more care were put into things.
Having read and enjoyed the novelization of Destiny, I can say that it certainly is great in theory. I enjoyed the book as much as I did the Genesis novelization, and it probably comes down to how the mind does all the work visualizing the scenes. I've watched more clips of Genesis than of Destiny, so that probably had a hand in how I visualized the scenes in Destiny.
in some ways I found the emotionless expressions of these Dalek slave workers in the quarry rather disconcerting, almost like their forced servitude of the Daleks took away any joy, hope or meaning in their lives so much they are so accepting of being exterminated as if this were putting them out of their misery. But yeah the way it was done does look rather cheap and lazy
I should have commanded my Daleks to force the slaves to take acting lessons...

That was an early electronic effect. This was pre video effects that were used in the 80s on Doctor Who.

The first one is literally smirking when walking up to the spot. This is why you don't just pick a load of random people to play extras if they're going to be this prominent on camera. In Destiny, the director's heart wasn't exactly in it either and that shows in this scene, but then again from what I've heard I don't think anyone could really be bothered in this production.
The worst stories in Who are definitely certain stories (this one, Timelash, half of season 24) where they very well knew they were in the process of making a crap story, but from a production standpoint instead of trying to make the best of it it just became a case of "yeah, whatever".
And that's what leads to scenes like this.
Maybe that's why this was Ken Grieve's one and only Who and he wasn't asked back? To be fair, though, the way he shoots the Dalek at the beginning from a low angle was quite good and he also innovated the use of Steadicam in Who for this story, so he wasn't all bad.
He laughs at death. This is that cool.

It's hard to believe this was filmed and broadcast. I guess in the end most people just want to punch the clock and go home.

You know working as a slave labour force for the Daleks is bad when you willingly come forward to be exterminated, and barely flinch when your insides are roasted by a projected energy beam

Ergh, I’ve always loved this story, but those extras, those sets, make it look soo cheap. The amount of times you can spot the extras smiling and laughing during serious moments, is madness.

Bear in mind that these slaves were exhausted therefore too tired to care or be frightened !. It didn't look too bad actually. Lets be fair to the actors who trained art at drama schools to entertain us .

I remember seeing this when it was broadcast and being $h|t scared when this was first broadcast and i was 7.
I still enjoy Destiny of The Daleks but that scene of the extras gently lying down after being zapped does somewhat diminish the tension.
The literal definition of 'Can't be arsed'.
You can tell that even the Daleks are embarrassed.
And that's why we didn't see another Dalek story for so long, they all went and complained to their union rep at how terrible this was

Davros: "Agree to his terms. He will do as he says. His logic is impaired by irrational sentiment. I, Davros command it!"

This had the Potential to be a Great Moment to demonstrate how GOOD the Daleks should be at being Ruthless Villians and it so gets let down by the Crappy Extras. Sigh.

The thing that REALLY spoils this story, is the "Rainbow 🌈 Zippy" Dalek voices by Roy Skelton! ... And Davros' voice isn't "all that" either! 👎🤣
This is a fun story and I didn't mind this much as it emphasized just how broken the slaves were, they might not have even grasped what was happening. The main slave in the story, not in this scene, was actually deaf, though it wasn't highlighted in the story.

While we could probably go on and on about who the best Doctor is, we can’t deny that Tom Baker is easily the most recognizable Doctor. The hat, the scarf, the Jelly Babies, there is a reason why whenever Dr Who is referenced in a show, it’s usually Tom Baker’s version. The personality and the look just pretty much emulate what many people think of when they hear the words “Doctor Who,” some goofy looking/acting yet intelligent guy traveling the universe and helping others

This could have been a good story as the overall plot, invovling the Daleks becoming too logical and stale, was actually fundamentally sound. BUt the production values in this story, and in fact pretty much the whole of the season, were quite terrible.

Don't worry the Dalek got better and this episode thankfully didn't ruin his showbiz career either since he ended up voicing Zippy on Rainbow in the 80s

It was. Inflation was rampant and production blew a big chunk of the season budget on a jolly to Paris. Season 17 was the most thrown-together and cheap season of Classic outside of City of Death.

I feel like the replacement of Romana 1 with Romana 2 was effectively the end of Dr. Who. It wasn’t clear at the time though.

_Doctor Who_ fans seem adorably selective about their complaints about this sort of thing lol. Just some trend starts where one of the cheesy, hokey things in the decades of this show is somehow bad and all the others aren't, for reasons lost to time.
Still better than any nuwho dalek story.

Jim Morrison Dalek, Bad Wolf, Parting of the Ways, Doomsday, Daleks in Manhattan, Evolution of the Daleks, Stolen Earth, Journeys End, Victory of the Daleks, Asylum of the Daleks, Day of the Doctor, Time of the Doctor, Into the Dalek, Magicians apprentice, Witches Familiar are all infinitely better.
