  • This is a 20min edited version of Birds of Prey to show off the helicopter sequences with the Hughes 500 and Lama. This is some of the best helicopter shots on film especially the standoff in the valley and the abandoned airport. The shots inside in the old hangar are truly amazing. My hats off the the two pilots. James W. Gavin (1935-2005), an amazing pilot, was the films aerial supervisor but the credits don't say who the pilots were.
Also amazing is that this was a "made-for-tv" movie in 1973, I remember seeing it then and got hooked on helicopters.
Thanks to Tomorrow Entertainment for producing a great helicopter film.

This increases the classic effect in a day and a time where movies were that much better quality because they didn't have they technology of CGI... They had to do this as opposed to cut such a whopping check even for the studio's standards. What Cruise did is an anomaly in today's theater.

I did some investigating. In 1973, the Salt Lake City Police Department used Bell 47-D's in 1973. They were not catching up to that Lama. It was a big area to comb over if the Army or Utah National Guard were to lend a hand, it might have taken them some time to find them. They were regularly flying low, below 300 ft to beat the radar.
