    Thirty years ago I was an iceman at a far north (Fort Nelson) hockey arena. After the last skaters had left (1:30am) I would put this song on the PA system (LOUD) while I drove the Zamboni around in the echoing arena. Needless to say, this song tugs at my heartstrings now.

    The physical recording is perfection on this song.

    Certain songs simply cannot be encapsulated into the 3-4 minute radio friendly timeframe of 1978. Hence, another stellar first time hear in 2021! Great pick.

    I really like a lot of his songs and have seen him in concert - but can't remember ever hearing this song. Quite powerful! Thanks for covering it.

      FRANKLY SPEAKING, I'D RATHER NOT HEAR REAL FAVOURITE SONGS / WHERE A LIVE PERFORMANCE, CANNOT RECREATE THE EXACT SOUND, THAT IS HEARD ON MY COPY. IN TODAYS HIGH-TECH WORLD, BUT, SUCH PROBLEMS OF THE PAST, ARE GRADUARLY BEING OVERCOME.

    Wow.....what a great song from Don. Very solemn...and Melancholy. I like it. The song is about Transformation and Resurrection of one's life with the falling in Love and being in Love and making Love.

    Don has a way with words and in this song it is showcased.

    :) Daniel,
    Was not expecting this song to feel so powerful! The way he emphasized the words by slowly singing each one - gave it quite an effect.
    Never owned a Don McLean album. Now I'm wondering why.
    This song was surprisingly good. :)
    Thank you, Daniel, once again!
    :)

    "Crying" is a cover of the original by Roy Orbison. They're both great versions.

    • @DougRayPhillips
      @DougRayPhillips 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. Of course, that song doesn't showcase McLean's songwriting ability. But it does showcase his voice. Takes a lot of guts to try to cover Roy, and that's the best cover of Crying that I know of.

    • @jc296x
      @jc296x 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DougRayPhillips Yeah he puts 100% emotion into it. I think that's why it worked so well for him. And he has the perfect voice for the song. Good point about the songwriting. I always put him in the top tier of lyricists, Especially sad songs. Nearly everything except American Pie that I've heard is somber but he's among the best at those.

      Kd Lang also did a great version of Roy Orbison’s “crying”

    Wow...I own at least 5 Don McLean albums, but I'd never heard this one before...love the sheer poetry of the lyrics, which reminds me of why I enjoyed his songs so much. He got some radio play with a song called Dreidel, which is worth checking out, but for another song with brilliant lyrics, try Homeless Brother. Or if you're in the mood for a great story song, check out The Legend of Andrew McCrew. Kudos to whoever recommended this one!

    Thank you, Daniel, for reacting to this song. I love your interpretation. You have such a knack for finding meaning in lyrics. Very good job with this one.
    For me, this song makes me feel very sad. I don’t want to mischaracterize anything so I will just say that from what I have learned about Don’s life, is that he was raised in an emotionally and physically abusive household. And of course, yes, there was love mixed in there or some version of it, I’m sure. But I think that he draws on some of those dark feelings for some of his songs. It could be conscious or unconscious, I don’t know. Sometimes abusive relationships can make us feel unclear about what is right and what is wrong. Some people go on to continue the cycle and they may feel conflicted about their part because their part includes not just actions but reactions to things that are hurting them.
    “In the forest I’m burning, struck down by the blast. The fever is turning, and the heat rises fast. And those standing nearest can show their concern. But I swear if they touch me, they too will burn.” This part of the song seems to me like Don is talking about a person that has something dark within them that could perhaps hurt others if they try to get too close. The person needs love from others but may not be able to receive it in such a way that they can love back in a healthy manner.
    I am a fan of Don McLean’s songs. His songwriting ability is absolutely masterful. His singing, his voice, and his acoustic guitar playing are things I consider treasures. Looking forward to more reactions to some of his lesser known but beautiful songs. Can I make a recommendation? Can you do a reaction to Three Flights Up? That would be a great song to lyrically analyze. Another very powerful song by Don is The Grave✌️

    Have been a diehard Don fan for five decades! Glad you see the other side of Don besides those major hits. If you ever wanna explore further, start from "Three Flights Up" from "Tapestry" and "Oh My What a Shame" from "Don McLean". Btw the album "Don McLean" has some of the best lyrics ever to be written by anyone, "Birthday Song", "The Pride Parade" to name just a few. "Genesis" from "Chain Lightning" is also outstanding poetry.

    A. Always good to see you, DS9. B. Wow! What a revelation this number was. I hadn't heard this one. Outstanding vocal by McLean. I would have preferred a little less from the strings, but overall, quite a nice number. (And let's hear it for lust.)

    He doesn't just do powerful, emotional stuff like this and "Vincent." Check out his darkly humorous, uptempo indictment of "modern" (mid-70s) American culture (most of which is still relevant - if not more so), "Prime Time," or "La La Love You" an upbeat love song with plenty of double-entedres.

    CONGRATULATIONS YOUNG MAN, FOR SHOWING YOUR APPRECIATION OF A GOLD PLATED MUSICAL CREATION, UNMATCHED IN MODERN TIMES. Strange that I don't remember this song at all. It is really good; I'm glad you covered it. It is very strange that the Wikipedia article didn't even mention the title song of the album.
    BTW, Don Maclean just did a collab with Home Free celebrating the 50th anniversary of _American Pie._ It is an excellent rendition. Here is a link to the official video: th-cam.com/video/9RlTZdYXcKg/w-d-xo.html Maybe do a reaction collab with your Dad.

    I haven't heard this one! I love it when you do something I haven't heard. Which gives me an idea. I don't listen to the radio anymore, I'm always online, so why not a radio station online? Maybe it's already being done, but I haven't seen it, and I would rather hear individuals playing their favorite music. Sorry, Don, I'm not loving this one.

    Did not like American pie when it first came out, never heard any other songs by him. Don't want to. But got himself a gold digging girlfriend who is 50 years younger than him. So go figure
