So satisfying to watch the blocks fill the tray... me and my ocd thank you Meg :D
I’m still using plastic cups... I guess the only good thing is that I’ve been using the same ones for like 5 years now (even though I will admit I bought a few more this season when I swore I would stop using the plastic cup)

the name of the game is being a conscious consumer and steward of this mighty home of ours, and that's exactly what you're doing with those solo cups of yours! Keep it up.

I've never used soil blocks myself, but I am considering it since they seem to perform better than plug or winstrip trays. Thanks for the recipe!

Tim Standaert we’ve been really happy though in full disclosure I do still use a few 128 plugs for some annual flowers. But generally, these are for all our veggies and most of our slower to establish flowers.

I can't wait to try soil blocking this year! I would love to see how you keep track of all the varieties in the tray.

When you say compost, do you mean something like Black Cow, and/or a similar brand of composted or organic cow manure? I too would like to make my own recipe not using peat because the commercial soil block mixes I have purchased had lots of small pebbles in it. I appreciate you taking the time to create a environment friendly blocking mix.

I've followed you on Insta for a few years and today was my first watching your videos. First off, you're great, just great. I tell everyone who gardens to follow you as you represent my #gardengoals. This was fascinating, I've also done my own mixture for seed starting the last couple years but I've really just winged it. This gives me some much needed "structure" (LOL) to my methods. Only one question, I went online and looked for soil block makers and of course was bombarded with options. Would you share where you purchased yours and if there are brands I should stay away from? Any suggestions are super appreciated. Keep up the amazing work. I'll be watching from Instagram. Love from Omaha. -Rae

Raechel Meyer I bought ours from Johnny’s Seeds. I have the same size and what looks like the same one listed in my amazon storefront which you can link to from my website or IG profile.

Thanks for a great, great video!! I "met" you on the channel growing a greener world and have followed your blog since. I have a question that I hope you can answer. I already have several bales of peat moss so that is what I am using to make my soil block recipe with. Can you tell me would I use the same parts as you do with the coir or would you recommend a change in the parts amount. Can't wait for your book!! God's Blessing to you and your family and hope you all are staying safe and doing well. Kim

Kim Parker peat works well, too. The original recipe has 3 parts peat to 2 parts compost and the rest is the same. However, you add lime to raise the pH of the mixture. My peat recipe can be found on my blog (seedtofork.com)

Do you add fertilizer to your blocks?

  • @hannahgrinberg5108

Thanks for the recipe! What do you use as fertilizer, since you leave the nutrients out (as compared to the original recipe?

The compost has nutrients in it! ☺️

Meg, I can't find the perma-nest trays on your store front or amazon anywhere. The one I did find was from park seed, the dimensions for the large is 22 7/8 x 12 x 2 1/4 inches. Can you please tell me where you purchased the bottom tray? Thank you for your time.

    • @SeedtoFork
      @SeedtoFork  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Kim - We bought the trays through Johnny's Selected Seed. They are a large initial investment (I think they were about $10/tray!). We also use just simple 1020 trays without holes when we inevitably run out of these permanest trays each season and those can be found on my amazon storefront. It looks like the permanest size we use isn't available on amazon anymore .. I'll keep searching and if I find one I'll update my store. Thanks for letting me know!

I live in the tropics, here its not easy finding the perlite in the gardening section, Im going to be making my own coco peat and I'm already making my own compost, I don't have my garden up and running yet, So I'm missing 2 of your ingredients...Any suggestions on substitutes would be greatly appreciated.

Vermiculite can be a good stand in for perlite. I've also seen green sand used, though that's not as close of a substitute. Good luck!

@@abigailobryan8725 I was planning on using crushed egg shells, baked to kill any unwanted bacteria.
