What surprised you most about the writing in this song?
Personifications and Antithesis
It's amazing to me that the bridge mentioned some string-like objects to match the theme of the song. Barbed wire, chains, wool, thread. Love it!
omg!! I love that!
You really need to listen to ivy next ❤
Ivy is in editing! :D
Happiness too!
@@khadijanedhal4735she already did it!
already done ^.^@@khadijanedhal4735
i hope "this is me trying" is on the list soon! This song is one of my favorites, strictly because of the writing and how painstakingly relatable it is to many (myself included) @@meganmaclaine
“Gave me the blues and then purple pink skies” refers to her ‘lover’ album cover, where it was mostly love songs and the color gold is the color that she described her relationship with joe, from the song daylight from lover she said ‘I once believe love will be black and white but it’s golden” black and white referring to her relationship in 1989/reputation era prior to joe and then she said ‘ I once believed love would be burning red but it’s golden like daylight” red referring to her red era relationship. Colors had always been part of Taylor discography
Taylor definitely means "pretty to think" in a way that it makes the story beautiful and meaningful. For me it always sounded like "i don't care if it's true or not, it just makes my romantic mind happy".
Not to mention that in later in midnights she literally said "non of it was accidental" and she designed this relationship
“dive bar” is brought up a lot especially when she talks about this time in her life bc that’s where her and the subject had their first date
delicate: “dive bar on the east side where you at?”
so it goes…: “met you in a bar”
cornelia st: “we were in the back seat drunk on something stronger than the drinks in the bar”
Cruel Summer too
This song is about her ex Joe Alwyn. She uses golden to describe this relationship a lot. She says in the song Daylight “I used to think love was burning red, but it’s golden” and she refers to a golden tattoo in Dress. There may be other examples but those are the two I can think of off the top of my head.
"Deep blue, but you painted me golden" in Dancing With Our Hands Tied, too!
A bit of gossip: the ex to whom she sent baby presents was Joe Jonas, sadly those babies are in the middle of a custody battle with Sophie Turner.
Spring is also associated with youth and autumn is a more mature age. So when she was first in Centennial Park, she was younger, more naïve. Now that she is back showing him around Centennial Park, she is older and a little wiser.
Yes! Love this addition
The purple pink skies also reference the cover of her Lover album which is also where she references how this love of hers is gold 😊
Ohhh that makes sense! Love this detail ^.^
Green is kind of the color that is assigned to her first album (15-16 years old). I think that’s why she highlights that the grass was green at centennial park! It’s kind of a subtle way of saying what time period we are in at the beginning of the song.
Random fact but In the music video for her song willow which is on evermore she has a golden glowing string tying/attracting her to her love interest in the music video
in cardigan too
im gonna get addict at these folklore writing tips videos, i absolutely love it!! u should react to the trilogy of betty, augustine and james which songs are betty (james pov) august (augustine pov) cardigan (betty pov)
I love this video so much Folklore is an amazing album, such amazing storytelling, one of my favorite from the album is “the great American dynasty” it’s tell an amazing story about rebekah harkness
I think the line “Isn’t it pretty to think so?” is an allusion to a similar quote from Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises! And the string is a motif that is similar to the string in Jane Eyre.
you really need to listen to cowboy like me!!!! it's from the evermore album and it's a beautiful poetic song I'm 100% you're going to love the story behind it!!! ❤
This song is sooo wholesome. It is about how the simple actions you made also have connections to the life of your fated person.
When she said green was the color of the grass, maybe shes still young (because I now associate green with youth after evergreen). And now that she's older, probably not golden age, but likely on the peak of her life, she now has someone to bring to that park, therefore gold was the color of the leaves...
Oh, and she usually uses gold when referring to *this* love in particular. Speaking of which, this song feels like a *prologue* to their love story. Please take a listen to Cornelia Street (from Lover album) and You're Losing Me (from Midnights album). Those songs are the *start* and *end* of their love story and there's a lot of parallels between these two songs. I'm sure you'll love it.
Please react to My Tears Ricochet - Folklore's track 5, which is one of the most vulnerable songs on the album.
Taylor said that on her 1989 album the song blank space was the most easiest to write since it was written based on a bunch of one liners that she had thought about and written down. So when it came time to putting the song together it was really easy. That explains why the song is the way it is
i think you would fall in love with the lakes by taylor swift, a lyrically magnificent song that i would enjoy hearing your opinions on.
I feel the verse lyrics are longer sentences is also a kind of "string", it feels like the string is threading through the scenes as the lyrics describes.
Oooooh I like this idea!
ivy and cowboy like me pleaseeeeee!!!
Ivy is coming ;) ;) ;)
have you done gold rush yet? its got some of my favorite lyrics and imagery. Ivy, specifically the clean version, would also make a great video!

Dear Reader
But you can’t go wrong with any of her songs. They’re all lyrically strong. ❤ been loving your reactions and writing tips.
also you’ll die over the lakes. poetry at its peak. my fav on folklore along with seven!
Compare "Invisible String" to "Mastermind" on Midnights. You've talked about the use of through lines with analogies in different songs before and this is a great twist on that.
would you be open to checking out mitski? shes a great writer, very different from taylor. love the reactions!
"Isn't it pretty to think so?" is the last line of a Hemingway novel called The sun also Rises. I think Taylors line was a nod to that.
I think you should listen to No Body, No Crime by Taylor. It's a story right there.
Your cat gently waving its little fluffy tail at the beginning is so cute and funny.
haha he's so sweet! Loves to make a cameo
I found you on TH-cam looking for renditions of Taylor Swift songs. I just love how you explain each sentence so well. ☺️
Yayyy glad you ended up here! ^.^
I love this song so much. I think in the end the string stops being invisible. So we get the woollen string keeping her warm through the seasons. We get the string as barbed wire caging her past mistakes. We see the string as chains that chained up her demons and we see the string as a golden string that lead her to him.
You need to listen to cardigan if you haven’t yet!!
I love all your Taylor Swift reactions/analyses. ❤ At some point you need to do All Too Well 10 minute version.
You might want to at least listen to The Moment I Knew before doing ATW10 to understand the important reference.
omgosh i need you to do this for Tolerate it!! I love your videos!
Thank you!!
I'd love to have you look at Cowboy like me. I think you'd like it!
I loved the book. Thankyou for suggesting. Please suggest me another one .
And please please do Cardigan, Betty August and willow. Please only if you can. It's up to your choice.
I asked my dad to join your channel but there was technical problem there but TH-cam thanks is working.
Thanks May!! How did you find the Giver? Easy to understand/hard/in-between, etc?
@@meganmaclaine Moderate. Reminded me another novel 1984. What should I read next?
oh my god, can you please do some midnights songs 😭😭😭
been lurking and watching your videos for a while.. I would *love* if Taylor did an interview with someone like you and went into a creative rundown of her writing. I could watch something like that for hours... I get a new perspective on the lyrics when you break them down section by section. Funnily enough I have a hard time remembering lyrics but after watching your videos and playing the songs later on in the day or week they become so much clearer to me.
Thank you!! That would be too fun ^.^ That's so interesting that the videos have helped you remember the lyrics - I love that!!
Thank you for reacting to these 2 abeautiful songs. Can you please 🙏 react to her most poetic song The Lakes ? 🙏❤️
Thank YOU for watching
girl i need you to listen to the lakes its literally a song all about poetry
did you do maroon yet? crazy to see a writer thought of it
By your facial expressions I'm not really sure if you like Taylor or not and it makes these videos more interesting 😂
Hahaha oh nooooo XD
The pretty to think is actually from Hemingway!
omg you’re right!! ahh 😍
It would be great if you could make a video about song The Lakes.
It's on my short list!!
pls do seven!! also from folkore
I take the line “green was the grass where I used to read at centennial park” as a representation of being young being “green” and the gold “her golden age” but also I live near centennial park so i know that that is where the nashville parthenon is. (Im a history buff). Anyways the crown of victory in ancient Greece was the laurel wreath a “wreath” made of golden leaves. Meaning she showed him the parthenon. And I can prove this because what is at the center of the parthenon you ask? ATHENA ATHENA HOLDING NIKE - Nike is the greek goddess of victory, Athena - the goddess of battle strategy and wisdom. Meaning Taylor sees her self fighting this whole time to finally come out on top, she sees it as the battle is over and she has won. Just as “Athena always did”. Now mind you, Taylor also is a reader, just like me and a history buff as well, you can tell just by her other song “The Last Great American Dynasty” and that is why i love her writing. Also look up the story of Orpheus and his Golden String- Laura Cox
Thanks for this! Love the play on green/gold and aging - can totally see that. I was wondering which Centennial Park this was referring to, haha, so thanks for adding that too :)
react to ´the great war´by taylor
thank you!!
🏃 P r o m o s m
Thanks for breaking down Taylor’s lyrics from your writer’s perspective. I’ve really enjoyed your videos.
Thank YOU! I'm glad you've enjoyed them :')
My impression is that "Isn't it just so pretty to think..." is a reference (allusion? sampling?) from Hemingway "Isn't it pretty to think so" which I believe is in "The Sun Also Rises". (Not certain of these details). I think Taylor likes to do this sort of thing (lots of Gatsby references, for example) so something to keep in mind when studying her lyrics.
you’re totally right! love that 😍
I am so happy that these got recommended to me! Love your reflections and break downs of lyrics. I know you probably have 50 different Taylor requests but I’d love to see you break down her poems she has published. “Why she disappeared” is in her reputation stadium tour. The others are “the trick to holding on”, “if you’re anything like me” and “a monster in my closet”(written when she was 10)
Omg! I had no idea she's had poems published - too fun. I'll definitely check them out ^.^
Such a beautiful song. Definitely one of my faves. 🥰
Loved your analysis! Can’t wait for more videos from you. 🫶🏼
Thank you so much!!
"dive bar" may be a reference to the optimistic end to the "delicate" video. I love your analysis, learned so so much!
Thank you!!
The writing did have a different approach, the use of color was really good. Great video, there break down was awesome, I had to watch it twice to take it all in.
Thank you!
Thanks
Thank you May!!
@@meganmaclaine I'm done with reading The Giver. What should I read next????
Hope you can post full videoo soon
Cat left at yogurt.

What's the cat saying. Yo grr ___
I’m both an aspiring writer and a swiftie. I couldn’t have found a more perfect channel for me lol. Love your videos. I’d love it if you listen to “my tears ricochet” and “this is me trying.”
Oh yay!! This makes me so happy ^.^
love this queen
It is great writing in this song.
fun fact: theres this chinese legend that a red, invisible to a human eye string ties you to your soulmate no matter the distance and whats in the way.
like i said, the legends states that the string is red because red is the color that represent love, but, as taylor stated in the song "daylight", she once believed love was red, but now she believes love its actually golden
thats why the invisible string from the chinese legend that tied taylor to the other person was a "single thread of gold", because love is not red, is golden
i love this detail sm 🥺🤍
