- Join us for a thought-provoking conversation with Laura Gilmour, the owner of Wild Muskoka Botanicals.
Laura's journey, from the fields of her grandparents' farm to the landscape of Muskoka, has been a lifelong exploration of nature's bounty. Guided by an Italian mentor and her innate curiosity, Laura's love for wild plants blossomed into a fascination with their culinary and medicinal potential.
With a foundation in Environmental Technology and years of hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture, herbalism, and permaculture design, Laura brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Her internships on permaculture farms taught her not only about gardening but also about wild food harvesting, herbal medicine preparation, mushroom cultivation, and animal husbandry.
Wild Muskoka Botanicals embodies a commitment to eco-conscious principles. Their artisanal wild foods and cocktail mixers are crafted from locally foraged ingredients, and the process is rooted in sustainability and ecological integrity. Based at the Wild Spirit Permaculture Homestead, on the western edge of Algonquin Park, this venture is all about rekindling our connection with the natural world and reimagining health and wellness through the integration of wild plants and traditional herbal remedies into our modern lives.
Laura Gilmour shares her deep botanical knowledge, insights, and the inspiring journey that led her to create Wild Muskoka Botanicals.

Wonderful podcast. Always informative. Thank you for taking the time to put it together.
Loved this podcast, I have learnt so much from Laura, you are creating an amazing circle, thank you!
Wow, Shawn this lady is amazing 9 mins in. I enjoyed listening to her. Thanks.
My goodness. What a precious wealth of wisdom to take in on a fine Sunday day. Thank you for being here. ❤️😊
So glad you found our chat valuable. We love sharing with our passionate people!
I listened to the podcast.
Impressed with your guest and her drive to both support herself and make money using permaculture principles.
Thank you for hosting such interesting and knowledgeable folks who love to share.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to tap into the collective history and wealth of indigenous knowledge of our local geography, biology, and geology? They already know everything about how to sustainably, naturally live and prosper in harsh Canadian environments for tens of thousands of years before Europeans showed up. Would love to hear a pod cast of shared indigenous storytelling and stories passed down though the millennia - This is how their knowledge was passed from generation to generation. Like the Bible, many of these stories seem like fables, but they are all rooted in fact and meant to communicate to future generations what ancestors have already learned.
So much informative this new videos .Great .
Thank You for this very important podcast Shawn. Inspiring. Informative. Educational. I look forward to receiving and using many of Laura's products. I truly enjoy and appreciate all of Your knowledge, talents and acquired wisdom. Thanks again.
I`m really enjoying the podcasts Shawn, Laura is well spoken, and it all makes sense, we just don`t eat like we used too, like you said only 100 years ago, I am sure guilty, yes I have a big garden now, but all our veggies are canned from the grocery store, so they can survive on a shelf for years, besides tomatoes and hot peppers, which I can, I did 61 qts of tomatoes and 18 qts of hot peppers, which we use a lot of, this year was the most tomatoes I ever did, I make huge pots of spagetti sauce and chilli, and we freeze it. But something as simple as dandelion greens being benificial for our bodies, it`s very interesting and we all can do it, I really like the podcasts.
We have a big garden too but foraging really has made a big difference in expanding our food security. It’s also nice to get a break from the garden and an excuse to be put in the forest!
Thank you for this incredibly helpful podcast. Such deep and clear thinking, very well expressed.
So glad you enjoyed & thanks for the kind words 😊
Love your Videos! We were a family of 8 children and my mother treated us with natural medicine. We never went to doctors that is why I am not taking drugs of any kind. I am 82 now with health problems. I learned to know my body and use my intuition. Great video Shawn and Laura. Thank you!
That’s inspiring to hear. So glad you enjoyed our chat!
Autoimmune issues are rampant in this country. It's taken a few years but I now have mine under control with diet thanks to youtube and some of the functional medicine doctors here.
Enjoyed the podcast , interested in Elderberry syrup, know and love the benefits and sooo good thanks
Amazing information, she is a brilliant woman..... certainly will be doing some research on her products.... looking forward to many more podcasts for sure.
So glad you enjoyed, May! I really enjoyed the talk & felt quite honoured to be invited. My Self Reliance is such an inspiring channel. Cheers & Happy Foraging!
Good Morning Everyone ❤ have a peaceful day🙋🏼♀️☮️
Realtor in the US here (Scandia, Minnesota zone 4b for reference) - and also avid Self Reliance fan. I LOVE this open discussion about the reality of acquiring property. So great to hear the truth about how to finance property and the investment of time it takes to get there - no matter where you are. The great thing is that the two of you were able to purchase on essentially one income. Even when both partners can qualify for a mortgage it is a really safe and smart strategy to base your lifestyle and debt on one income. So great to hear your story Laura!
Thank you. This is one of the best podcasts I've ever watched. Very, very informative and helpful. So nice to see the both of you sharing and discussing your knowledge and experiences together. I learned a lot from watching this. I saved this to my favorites, and will go back and watch it many times because I'm sure there are things I missed the first time watching it. Very nicely done. Thank you again.
So much great info ! Thank you!
Shawn, your podcasts are very good and gave a lot of information. This one was well done. Excellent.
Thankyou, Shawn. Thankyou, Laura. Appreciated. A nice informative chat.
So glad you found our chat valuable 😊
@@wildmuskoka I'm an old boy who shops at the supermarket but I know there's lots of folks, and youngsters, who favour being a little more wholesome. Most appreciate your chat with Shawn.
Absolutely amazing interview, TY to Laura. So informative in so many ways
You are most welcome, I quite enjoyed the interview!
Thank you Shawn, fantastic podcast ❤ Extremely inspiring as we all should look into our own grassroots and the forgoten 'alternative' healing practices. Learning and sharing with others keeps us aware, awake and less dependent on modern chemical based medicines with shelf value. Understanding the value of my 'weeds ' can be life changing in the years to come. Love it Shawn, keep it local as you are building Ontario's CA wealth. ❤
Well done! Appreciate the information.
That was so enlightening Shawn,& Laura. I really learned a lot,& found the experience entertaining. Thus, keeping me more engaged.💯😀👍🏾💜✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
So glad you enjoyed, I had fun during the interview!
very awesome content thank you!
Yesss.... foraging responsibly with permaculture - something I'm just beginning to really learn about. Sooo excited to see others locally also doing it - and BEEN doing... and working with the challenges of the specific landscapes. ♥♥♥
So glad you enjoyed. Living in a more northern growing region, integrating permaculture & foraging has made a lot of sense in improving our self-reliance!
Great conversation! Thanks much!
Absolutely love the feeling inside knowing this is local. And shawn it is so true that the reward of taking care of ones self and being able to say that you grew or harvested something on your plate is truly rewarding beyond words ...great work on every level of your life and sharing the knowledge with us . Cheers mate
Excellent, thanks for posting these! Soil building is so doable, and so satisfying. 👍😎🌱🇨🇦🐾
This was great ❤
I enjoyed this chat!
I'm 65 years old and have grown up on a few farms where my family of 8 used gardens and some livestock to sustain our food intake. Being we had gardens, we didn't forage for natures food. Sadly I see a time when it may come to either we learn to forage for food or we starve. The world is changing. In just a matter of seconds we could see a drastic change in how we survive. Thank you, for bringing these Pod Cast we desperately need. God Bless
Shout out to Laura. Im a 40 year plus forager for wild foods and medicines and interestingly shared a cottage on hwy 35 just south of Dorset. Born and raised in Kirkland Lake but my connection to Dorset had me spending a lot of time in the Haliburton Highlands.
I now live on Vancouver island because there is just more opportunity for working with wild mushroom in the Pacific n/w.
I do come back to Ontario every summer to check patches Ive found over the last 40 years so I do travel alot of miles every year.
My son and I do content creations on youtube call northern wild harvest for those that are interested.
Laura and I have alot in common as I also have spent time in N Cal, Oregon and washington state. Its been a battle over the years with fungi phobia, over logging etc so Im so happy to hear Lauras story. Thank you for doing this podcast Shawn.
I have been quietly following your journey since your first property.
I appreciate your passion to improve the quality of our land
The information you provide is so informative 👏
sean, your guest was highly informative, I encourage your continued collaboration, on subjects regarding herbal benefits and foraging
laura, your voice and delivery tempo,is gentle, and soothing, for this grizzled 71 year old, combat veteran. i listened to your entire episode
@@majcorbin ahh, thank you for the kind words & so glad you enjoyed 😊
I absolutely love these podcasts and this dialog format. I have learned so much and I just wanted to say thank you. I know it takes a good deal of time and effort and I greatly appreciate the education garnered from these presentations. Thank you for all that you do, you are very much appreciated.
Shawn, you and Laura have provided some valuable information here. This is why you starting this podcast series is so worthwhile. Thank you!
Thank for educating us. Great job.
Thank you, Cindy 👋
Laura seems like a great lady. Really has a good business model to sell her products.
Thanks for the kind words, I try 😊
Obrigada meu amigo querido, por nos compartilhar, vc é lindo demais.🙏😘
FANTASTIC show today Shawn ,very informative on some good stuff to know and so helpful ' Thank you for sharing all you do 😃 What a really nice lady that gave me some awesome ideas for how i need to expand and utilize my diet contiosly to get what i need with whats available to me ! Here in Hawaii i have been so exposed to so much fruit with acidity that it backlashed on me creating gout in my feet that was so painful from the swelling that i literally couldnt walk ! When i got the tests back from my doctor i was in shock that it was from fruit that i thought would never hurt me ! So what ive learned is how much moderation and diversity plays a key in my health and greens with nuts is important now . ❤
Totally enjoyed this Podcast..❤️🇨🇦
I'am Big Fan from you Schawn take care
This was awesome buddy👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Very interesting
That was really interesting, she was very knowledgeable loved it.
This was a wonderful podcast! Thank you!
Fantastic information Laura - MIND BLOWN! I am so impressed with your breadth of knowledge and confident commitment to your passion, as an herbalist. scientist and a businesswoman. I could listen to Laura for days - thank you for this! I just did some holiday shopping on your website...and I will be walking my property to look for more plants thanks to you!
My sister so inspirational!!!!
Great information Sean I'm glad you shared it
I heard this one and the latest podcast Shawn and it was amazing. Some great content and guests on the last two especially. Keep it up Shawn. Learning so much in an area I do not know much about. Now, I am reading and researching.
Great podcast, very informative. Not sure why it's so important where he is and whether or not he's at his cabin. Being offgrid means connectivity and power is sometimes a challenge so maybe he's in the city or maybe he now has studio space somewhere; who cares!
I believe his wife is still working and maintaining an Apartment somewhere. Being self reliance on the land he has is something that takes time. I have enjoyed watching and learning everything he has to teach.
SHAWN & OUR CALI !!! Went to Laura's channel and Subscribed to her also !!! It does help on out out there !!! Am interested in this alot!!! Used to buy Bitters for the Nuns at the Hospital !!!
Thanks for the follow, Linda & so glad you found the episode inspiring. We’re you buying the bitters as digestives for them?
Shawn, I've really been enjoying these podcasts. Wife and I are on the shield and Laura gave some fantastic usable info. We are in second year of garden and the soil is just beginning to produce. Biggest help has been getting a cat. If Laura did a class on wild collection my wife and I would love to do that class... especially mushrooms.
Would you please give the website for Laura's website for medicinals foraging next video or podcast?
Wow, this was incredible!!! I've been following you for years and this is one of your best!!!!! Im going to be subscribing to hers as well!!! Thank you both!!
Awesome info thanks Shawn! 👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
Very interesting podcast, thank you both.
Excellent content - as always Shawn 👏👏👏
defiantly need a base salad because the taste of most plant found are pretty bitter and the normal salad will help off set the bitter. also the smaller ,younger leaves will be less bitter tasting so collect the tiny leaves over the bigger ones , tiny is less bitter tasting.
It's clearly Not his cabin, evident by what appears to be fire sprinklers above his head on the ceiling. However, its another Beautiful room that he probably built and is just as wonderful as everything else that Shawn does.
Clearly visible in the first few seconds. And he says, 'I am here with...'
@@overthetop4247
Yes..." L E D'S"!!
And it is his cabin!!
OK everyone, I stand corrected! At he beginning of the video, Shawn clearly says..."Welcome to the Cabin." But I was right about something, It is Beautiful and he did Build it. 😀
Isso é muito bom, nos traz confiança no youtuber que seguimos com tanto carinho Parabéns!
Aquele abraço
My gosh who cares?😂
With Christmas coming, I am sure to order some of your products!!! Thanks to you both for all the info.
Thanks, Anne, really appreciate you supporting small business. Also so glad you enjoyed the episode! It was such a pleasure to be interview on such a great podcast & TH-cam channel.
Fabulous
where is this room you're broadcasting from? this can't be in your cabin.
Why can't it be?
What difference does that make, focus on what the conversation is.
Very interesting !
WoW,,i really like smart women... she is over Smart id say..great information ,,,im kind of like ,,im not so kind to reading,i really like to be shown something for me to learn it,, not in everything,,but some of the things shes talking about,,i read a lot about Gin Sing Root..when she was talking,i was thinking about it,,,and when she said Dandy Lin,,i use to go out hunting for my grandpas Salad,,,Polk and DLin...he loved it,,,never figured why, intill later in life..Great Video Shawn..

Shawn, as a long-time subscriber , I did not like that jerk in your first podcast. I was shocked that you are intrigued and friends with such a selfish person. BUT, this amazing podcast with this knowledgeable and amazing woman was just great. Great stuff !!!
Trying to find a place to buy fermented carrots would be awesome...💖

Where is this nice room at?
I think it's in a camper trailer at his sister's property.
Shawn and his wife have a nice modern house in town they’ve shown themselves cooking and bbqing at. He’s not fulltime off grid- Only for his income earning TH-cam hobby. This studio is likely in his basement at his urban house. Supplementing his income now with podcasting since TH-cam has restricted earnings for Canadian makers.
@user-tb5ns7hc5i no at the beginning of the video he says welcome to the cabin.
Are you living in his garage or what? @@user-tb5ns7hc5i
And.....
How do I meet a woman like this!
Hi Shawn,
You have mentioned your daughters auto immune problems. Have you looked into the possibility of it being caused by Lyme disease? I have a close friend that has been debilitated by it. It is a disease we know nothing about about that there really is no cure for it.
Thanks,
Mark
Mark, try finding a naturopathic nutritionist! We are going to one and she has helped us tremendously! We've hardly been sick since we started to go natural! She had Lymes, as well as 3 other issues, and Drs couldn't help!! She had to do her own research because she was bedridden!
Did you build this room too? Do you live where this room is too and not at the cabin? Makes no sense? Bless you & yours whereever you may be
Really, what business is that of yours? It's a good idea to mind your own business when it comes to his personal life.
I’m pretty sure he’s doing this virtually
Do you no any websites to find farms and other places that let you work for room and board here in the states
wwoof.net/get-started/
It was funny when you were discussing about harming the environment by foraging. It is so scary how uninformed people are about where their food comes from. Too many people think food comes from a grocery store, they have no idea where the grocery store gets the food, it just magically appears there.
Buongiorno sono sempre io 😊 purtroppo nn capisco l'inglese 😢e mi piacerebbe capire cosa dicono 😅 grazie
I suffer from autoimmune disfunction and am trying to cure this with careful diet and the sun which I think was a bad sunburn which may have triggered to onset never had it before but understand that the cure may well be in the soil of plants grown especially wild untouched wild life plants so thinking of planting my garden instead of buying from the supermarket which is a bad thing food wise
2 things... 1) a "Disclaimer". You need a medical disclaimer at the beginning and the end or YT will mark you as giving medical advice, etc. 2) A lot of vegetables sold in grocery stores and Hydroponically grown. That is why they lack the nutrition of soil grown plants... the end... lol
As a US citizen, having healthcare is a priority. A young person seldom has the freedom, to do this sort of thing.
HELLO:
Just a suggestion. If you want to keep people's attention, we don't need an in-depth chronological history of how someone arrived at their situation. Different matter if there are video clips, pictures, and illustrations accompanying the discussion. Just sayin'...
what the heck is sticking out of her neck?
Good Sunday Shawn & Laura!
Thank you for sharing your life informative experience journey.
I used to live in downtown in the city. Only thng worth you time and effort to grow vegetables in the second story balcony was leafy lettuces. You just have to water the leafy lettuces more regularly than the garden.
👍🌅🌄🏞️🏡
Iceberg lettuce are dificult to grow. It does not have much nutrients. It is mostly contain water.
Ginseng is really good for boosting and enhancing your immune system. I have found that it also lower your blood pressure. You can grow the wild ginseng in the forest.
Rosehip hibiscus tea which you can buy in some supermarkets. It comes in 20 tea bags and cost about $1.29. Health food sales them too. "Rosehip hibiscus tea can lower your blood pressure about 30 by drinking a tea."👍☕
I have watched W5 yesterday. Which was about "Microplastic" in human blood, cosmetics, food, rivers, lakes, oceans, and "soil ferilizers".
Some of the farmers and cattle ranchers have to shot down their livelihood because they unknowingly used the soil ferilizers which contain Microplastic. The Microplastic levels are too high for the human consumption for milk, meat, and vegetables. They have to put their cattles to sleep and they have to rely on the food stamps.😩
Their soil ferilizers come from water treatment center sources.
