Thank you this video was super informative, the reviews were so helpful to help choose some books for me as a watercolour beginner. After watching it I went and got Painting Calm by Inga Buividavice and Learn to Watercolor by Sarah Van Der Linden. They seemed like the best ones to start with and closer to the style I wish to develop. Let's see how I do and maybe Ill keep going 🙂
Thank you for your CREATIVE comment, much appreciated! And I hope you find joy and inspiration in your next project, be it from of these books or not :)

Creative!!!! This is one of the best videos I have watched. I am a retiring math teacher hunting for a way to spend my days. Watercolors, particularly loose watercolors, fascinate me. You have inspired me to try and, most importantly, give me a direction to pursue. I love this video. I have saved it to watch again. Thank you for your "research," and for sharing your knowledge and experience. Wonderful! Every beginner should watch this!
Thank you so much for your kind comment, I really appreciate your feedback! I love hearing that you are on a similar journey, and the pursuit of loose watercolors has slowly started a change in my whole life too. I hope this brings you some inspiration and ideas to pursue 😉❤️
Great video! I am new to urban sketching, and I have found that going with other people like the local urban sketchers group really helped me to not be so uncomfortable. They were all very welcoming and being part of the group took the “stress” out of it!
Great tip! 🫶 This is something I have to try and I am currently looking into urban sketching chapters in central Switzerland… I hope there is no minimum skill requirement to join 😅
CREATIVE ...I really enjoyed your thorough presentation of the books you've been using. I haven't heard of or considered many of them. I'd be really interested in seeing what you've done with your Daniel Smith dot card colours!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found the video useful - and I look forward to filming a dedicated video to show the full range of 238 Daniel Smith watercolors that I tested. It’s a whole sketchbook so it definitely needs its own video 😂🫶
Wonderful reviews of books I have wanted as a beginner- only 4 months in. Your own sketchbooks you preview here are fabulous and I hope to progress as much as you have. I am saving your full sketchbook tour video for another day. So much information from a super creative for other creatives. Thank you so much from rural and cold Wisconsin.
The Felix Scheinberger is one of my all time favourites.,…very informative about watercolour and the different properties as well as being very attractive
Creative!! I just recently found your channel and truly enjoyed it. The book review was very informative and appreciated. I recently started watercolor painting for about a year myself. My tip for sketching/painting in public would be to start in quiet places , I used to go to the natural history museum here in Ireland for example because I knew that other people would be preoccupied with looking at the displays rather than what I was doing , not all museums allow artists to sit and draw though and if you choose the natural history.. you are surrounded by the many bones of animals and I’m not sure if you would enjoy that much :/ but libraries are usually good to dip your toe rather than the coffee shop and places like churches and church grounds , people come and go but they generally keep to themselves ❤ hope this helps x Ps I will be investing in some of these books because they look absolutely fantastic!
Thank you for your comment and your tip! I love the natural history museum idea because it is such a beautiful and quiet place - and also because I actually love dinosaurs and fossils. The shapes of the bones and fossils are so beautiful and this is a great idea actually that I would love to sketch! And I’m so glad to hear you found the video useful, thank you for your support! ❤️
You’re very welcome ❤ yes the natural history museums are interesting in so many ways especially with sketching studies, I’m glad you don’t find them creepy 😂 some people do. I also remembered one more thing that helped me a lot back then getting used to people being around- timed thumbnail quick sketching , can be as short or as long as you want .. and it’s enjoyable having a sketchbook of loads of little squares of 30 seconds, 1minute , 2 minute etc .. can be any medium too , I liked using willow charcoal for example x x enjoy your sketching and arty adventures , I hope you will let us know how you get on with them x ❤
Creative! Your guide was superb! I also like books! I own Inga Buividavice‘s 1st. book & like it. The others look good too, I‘ve various on famous artists & a few basic books my last purchase that I‘m working through is „Farben“by Christin Stapff. I relish turning the colourful pages as you seem to do! The wonder of arts. Now I’ll see if I can purchase another to inspire me. Thanks.

You are such a CREATIVE person 😊 I loved seeing your book choices, many of which I too own. Stick with the Betty Edward’s book. I first had a copy over 20 years ago and found it too technical. Then last year I discovered the sketchbook put aside specifically for that book. I flicked through the exercises already done and realised there was no way I could do half of them now! I downed tools 20 years ago when I was once again widowed. Only now do I feel ready to begin that book again, whilst I still plat with the colours I own. 😊👍🏻🎨👩🏻🎨🖌️📖

Jaw dropping stuff, like Nita Engle's work.

Creative indeed! Thank you so much. I have a couple of the books discussed, and you have now introduced me to many more (unfortunately 😁) that I would like to add to my collection. Wonderful video. Did you tell us what your sketchbooks are?
Thank you for your comment and your support! Art book collecting is indeed an easy trap to fall into hehe. The sketchbooks I showed in this video are the Hahnmuhle 100% cotton 250gsm square watercolour sketchbooks. I am planning my next video on filming some reviews of different sketchbooks, so stay tuned if that interests you ;)
@@TheCherrypipangel Thank you for the sketchbook details, yes the Hahnemuhle 100% cotton books are really wonderful. Yes please, a video on sketchbooks would be very interesting - let's face it, we all get obsessed with finding our favourite sketchbooks!

My motivations behind starting watercolor were quite an evolution and this is something I will talk about when I do my sketchbook tours of my first sketchbooks since it really goes hand in hand with my work. And I look forward to sharing it with you in the near future :)
This is a lovely video, thank you for sharing these books with us. I would love the books by Jennifer and Blanche in English. Would you know if there is any chance of that happening?
Thank you for the kind comment! And I hope they will be released in English, but I have no info on this. Since the books are both recent publications it may be a while… 🤷♀️ sorry I have no definite answer!
Thank you for sharing your books. The one that caught my eye was Jennifer Lefevre, but unfortunately I don't speak French. I think watching to her videos will give me a hint. I so love the forest. The only watercolor books I own is by Jane Blundell which will last me ages of use. My art book are more of drawing, geometry, and photography. I have been a artist all my life of many genres, just never explored painting, till a couple months ago...always found it the ultimate intimidation lol You mentioned becoming looser in your painting. Have you ever tried Zentangle or neurographic art? I have found over the years those help me get out of my head. Speaking of CREATIVE creation (giggles) There's a video I came across with a Zen approach titled "Art as Spiritual Practice" You simply take whatever instrument you want to draw with other than a pencil perhaps. Then draw something very fast with your entire being in seconds...moving so fast you can't see what your making. You repeat this over and over. He suggests getting a ream of copy paper. He said someone that has never drawn before might get it quicker than us artist crammed with years of techniques and training...we might need a few reams hahaha It does open you up and get you out of your way. I use a Pentel Fude Brush or sometimes a Hake brush it amazing what you get, and your getting in touch with your Chi and letting go. Which is beneficial beyond art. Let me know if you try any of these and if they helped or not. Wishing you a fun journey! 💜
Wow, this sounds amazing. I have spontaneously been doodling most of my life and realized a few years ago that it was really similar to neurographic art, but I have always wanted to dive deeper in a more formal way or to educate myself on this. And this zen approach sounds wild, I need to go check out this video - thank you for the recommendation! 🥰🎨💙 PS. How did you discover this?
@@TheCherrypipangel The video popped up in my feed. It's not a art channel, there's one more video about using the zen brush and the rest are regarding zen. I dabble in zen, which is another reason it came up. I forgot to include the channel name "The Enlightened Way" if you haven't seen it yet go there and search for the video "Art as Spiritual Practice". Let me know if you tried it, it's wild. 🎆💜 🥰
Thank you for sharing such a great video with helpful insights in your painting journey! I too find the urban sketching intimidating and uncomfortable. I like the ideas others gave below which I will try as well. I wanted to recommend artist Karen Rice to you for inspirational videos. You mentioned the book you like that the artist did messy but beautiful work. This lady makes beautiful and exciting work approachable. She breaks the work done to start it with using thicker paint, water and even an old credit card. What I love to see is her nature scenes! She beginner friendly watercolor and also very experienced artist! I just found the urban sketcher in Ireland Roisin Cure who also has TH-cam videos and is so very lovely and charming and sketches and paints her life! I wish I could hand out with her because she absolutely engaging and her talent and passion is amazing! 😉
I loved reading your comment, thank you so much for taking the time to write it! I’ve been following both Karen and Roisin for 2-3 years and really enjoy their work. Roisin’s style actually particularly inspired me to start watercolours and sketchbooking, I am in awe of all her sketchbooks. I’d also love to hang out with her! We can start a Roisin Cure fan club 😂❤️🫶
Good to know I am not the only one who considers books sacred, not to be messed with. I sort of overcame some of that reserve at university with the books for my courses, usually just the ones that weren't related to art (history, science, etc.) Also, seeing books cut up and cut into just jars me.
Steve Mitchell from The Mind of Watercolor TH-cam channel recommends Nita’s book. He also teaches that watercolor paints itself. He succeeds at “spontaneous” watercolor which is always a fail for me. I love his channel though and he does do a lot of other methods and knows watercolor thoroughly.
I love his channel too and have been watching a lot of him for a year or two, and actually that may be where I hear the recommendation for Nita’s book. So nice to meet a fellow MoW fan 😉🫶
Hello creative, i found you just today. Loving your art thank you for sharing your journey. you for such an in depth review. I watch alot of book reviews and this was the best by far from my perspective. Is it possible to have the title and author typed out for the french books. I cannot read the hand lettering very well. Also I have no bookstores in my town so these reviews are suxh a blessing.
Thank you for this video. Hearing your preference i would recomment Hariet De Winton. She paints a lot of plants, house, garden. Always with showing the drawing. I love her. Love the painting calm book (i own), will look for the second one! And what was the name of the sketchbook you mentioned?
Thank you for your comment and for recommend Harriet de Winton. I do follow her on TH-cam and enjoy her new-style botanicals in particular - very good recommendation and I will have a look for her books then 🫶 The sketchbook I showed was the Hahnmuhle 250gsm 100% cotton square sketchbook in 21x21cm.
I had a hard time understanding the type of paper you mentioned at approximately 55.41. It's the sketchbook with the soft paper that the author Jennifer Lefevre uses. I am curious to give it a try but I am not sure how you spell it based on your pronunciation? Thanks so much for these recommendations. I think I am going to buy at least two of the books you recommended, including Jennifer Lefevre's book if there is a version in English.
I’m so glad some of the books inspired you, and Jennifer’s book and style is particularly lovely. The paper she uses is KHADI paper from a company called Indigo Artway. I picked one of their sketchbooks up from Amazon for under 10$ and I was amazed at how unique and fun this paper is. It’s definitely worth trying! 💙🫶
@@TheCherrypipangel Thank you for the info. I bought a sketchbook on Amazon with paper that looks very similar but when I got it, there was some sort of coating on the paper that made it super weird for watercolor and everything I painted got these weird veins and the paint just didn't take to the paper. It just bled in a strange way too so nothing I painted looked right. I only use it for gouache now. So I likely would not have tried this if I saw it on Amazon. I will check it out!
If you’re looking for the link to the specific KHADI paper sketchbook I use (and also see how it looks in video when you paint in it) - I have a video comparing watercolour sketchbooks on my channel. And I feature the Indigo Artway KHADI paper sketchbook in there, and the link is in the description too. So you can check it out before ordering if you want 😊 I do love it very much lately and recommend it if you like a soft finish
Thank you so much for sharing these books, I’ve gone and bought some of these now to help me with my watercolour journey. What square sketch books did you use? As I would like a square one for practising in.
You are so welcome, I’m glad you found the video helpful! I use the square 100% cotton 250gsm sketchbooks from Hahnmuhle, and I also love square sketchbooks 🫶💙
I can relate to not wanting to paint in a book. I have a Jane Davenport book like that. It's a colouring and painting book. I just can't do it because I'm afraid I'll wreck it 😂.
PS I used to guide architecture students through Europe graphically documenting the built environment. None of us were ever ‘cool girl’ urban sketchers. We very thoughtfully, mindfully, connecting and learning. Thete are many ways to be! 😂😊😘
@TheCherrypipangel , what about sherley Trevanas book taking risks in water color? Can you please provide a review , she is one if my favourite artist with a unique signature style!
Hi, thanks for the comment - and the discovery! This is an artist I was not familiar with and I appreciate the recommendation. If I can get my hands on her book, I’ll post a review 😉🫶
I believe things you bought should be used. My mom have precious book thing too, and she won't let us use anything as intended if it "destroys" the item. Then the things just sit and deteriorated, and get thrown away.
I know right! I also grew up with beautiful things that were all packed away and that we could never touch… and then one day everything had to be thrown away because decades had passed and no one had ever used it and it had disintegrated! I also really believe in using your nice stuff now and not waiting for “one day” that never comes! 💙🫶
I love the lamp! It would be nice if you turned the music down several decibels because it drowns out your voice when you're creating, so I didn't hear 65% of your words.
Thanks for letting me know, and I’m so sorry about that! I haven’t actually put music into the video but it may be the music from the neighbours while I was filming… I will be more mindful of the environnement next time! 💙🫶

PS.
Meant it to say hang out, but was auto corrected hand out! Ugh 😳🤯
For sure! 🥳
Good to know I am not the only one who considers books sacred, not to be messed with. I sort of overcame some of that reserve at university with the books for my courses, usually just the ones that weren't related to art (history, science, etc.) Also, seeing books cut up and cut into just jars me.
Exactly!! I get you! 🫶
Creative!
Thank you! 🫶
Thank you for sharing these books and for sharing your sketchbooks as well. Can I ask what the brand of sketchbook that you use please?

Creative! Hehe 🎉
Thanks for the support, you're brilliant! 😄
Thank you so much for such a lovely and kind comment 🥰🫶
The full names of each book can be found in the video description - I hope that helps!

I do follow her on TH-cam and enjoy her new-style botanicals in particular - very good recommendation and I will have a look for her books then 🫶
The sketchbook I showed was the Hahnmuhle 250gsm 100% cotton square sketchbook in 21x21cm.
Thanks for sharing! And actually, mindful, thoughtful and connected people sound VERY cool to me! ❤️🫶
